Elle Smith, Miss Kentucky USA 2021, was named Miss USA 2021 on Monday night at the River Spirit Casino Resort in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Smith, 23, is a reporter for WHAS-TV, the ABC affiliate in Louisville. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in May 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in political science.
As Miss USA, Smith will move on to compete in the 2021 Miss Universe pageant on Dec. 12 in Eilat, Israel.
At Monday’s pageant, which was televised by the A&E Network’s FYI channel, Smith was crowned by Miss USA 2020, Asya Branch. Smith bested 50 other contestants, including Miss Alabama USA, Alexandria Flanigan.
Flanigan, 25, was not among 16 semi-finalists announced on Monday, so she didn’t compete in the televised swimsuit, evening gown or question-and-answer competitions. (Miss USA doesn’t have a talent competition.)
Four other contestants for Miss USA, Cassidy Jo Jacks (competing as Miss Arizona USA), Cora Griffen (competing as Miss Georgia USA), Caroline Pettey (competing as Miss South Dakota) and Bailey Mae Anderson (competing as Miss Mississippi USA) also have Alabama ties.
Jacks, 27, is from Springville. She’s a University of Alabama graduate who previously competed in the Miss Alabama pageant, which is affiliated with Miss America. Griffen, 25, is a graduate of Auburn University who also competed in the Miss Alabama pageant. Pettey, 27, is a Decatur native and Auburn graduate. Anderson, 22, attended the University of West Alabama.
Jacks and Griffen were not among the top 16 at the Miss USA finals. Anderson was among the 16 semi-finalists, but missed the cut for the top eight. Pettey made the top eight, but wasn’t among the final four.
Miss North Dakota USA, Caitlyn Vogel, was the runner-up at the pageant on Monday. Miss Florida USA, Ashley Bareto, came in third. Miss Illinois USA, Sydni Bennett, took fourth place.
Smith begins a yearlong reign as Miss USA, with Los Angeles as her base. “For the duration of her reign, she will be engaged in red carpet experiences, networking opportunities, professional photo shoots, speaking engagements and more,” the Miss USA website says. “She will also have the opportunity to promote her personal platform alongside the charitable alliances of the Miss USA Organization.”
Here’s Smith’s biographical statement for Miss USA:
“I see being a journalist in America today as an honor, and a role I take very seriously because it is such an essential part of our society. Each day is different and challenging, but I have the opportunity to connect with my community and share new perspectives.
“In my free time, I enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants and attempting to cook. I would consider myself a creative, having grown up surrounded by all forms of the arts. My father is a photographer, so I love all things photography, videography and modeling (hello future career). My mother is a classically trained pianist, so I played viola, piano and sang. Music has been an integral part of my family life thanks to my late grandmother who sadly passed away in 2015 due to cervical cancer. She inspired me to advocate for cervical cancer awareness and prevention, a mission I will continue as Miss USA.”
If Smith becomes Miss Universe, she’ll cede the Miss USA title to the first runner-up.
KFVS reporter Hanson wins Miss Illinois crown

Submitted by Isabelle Hanson Isabelle Hanson reacts to winning the Miss Illinois title while holding hands with the runner up, Miss Southern Illinois, Janna Harner, at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center in June.
After getting first runner-up in 2018 and the 2020 competition being postponed, Miss Northern Suburbs Isabelle Hanson was anxiously awaiting to hear her rank at the end of the Miss Illinois 2021 Scholarship Organization competition last month at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center.
She was holding hands with the soon-to-be-announced runner-up, Miss Southern Illinois, Janna Harner of Anna, Illinois.
Once it was clear Hanson had won the title, she said she was overwhelmed.
I knew that I had prepared for that moment and that I was ready for it. But when they call your name, you just, you cant prepare for that moment. So I kind of fell to the ground. And my mouth was open the whole time, Hanson said.
The Northern Illinois native and Southern Illinois resident was then crowned and given a new sash saying, Miss Illinois. Its a title she had in her sights since she started competing in the Miss Illinois Teen and Miss America Teen pageants when she was in high school.
Those in the Southeast Missouri region might recognize Hanson from their TV screens because she is a reporter and anchor at KFVS News 12 based in Cape Girardeau.
As Miss Illinois, many, many situations will be thrown at me. Ill have to meet people from all different backgrounds, all different ages. And so being a reporter at KFVS has prepared me for this years Miss Illinois to do that. So Im very thankful to the Miss Illinois organization for preparing me to be a reporter and anchor, and then also for KFVS, for preparing me to be Miss Illinois. Its kind of worked hand in hand, Hanson said.
Becoming Miss Illinois means Hanson will compete in the next Miss America pageant and complete a year of service through her social impact initiative.
Hanson said she will be volunteering around the state, mostly by visiting schools to speak about her chosen initiative, the media literacy movement. She said although she didnt grow up with social media at a young age, children nowadays do, which can affect them in many ways. She wants to equip them with skills to critically analyze media messages so they can have a healthy self image and maintain their mental health.
And so I want to teach children that they are beautiful, just the way they are. They dont have to look a certain way because of an Instagram post. And so that theyre aware of kind of whats being put into their hands through Instagram, Facebook, any social media site, and how they can consume it in the best way possible for their overall health and for a better future, Hanson said.
Miss America
She is also still in awe she will be competing in the upcoming Miss America competition taking place in December. She said she has watched it on TV since she was little, so its surreal to be preparing for it. She is perfecting her violin performance for the talent portion of the competition. It is a full-circle moment because part of her motivation to join the teen pageants was to perform and get feedback on her violin skills she has practiced since she was 4.
Overall, Hanson is grateful for all the competitors she has met in the Miss Illinois competition and for the organization itself.
Hanson said every one of her fellow contestants in June was given scholarship money going to a current or future education or to student loans. She is thankful to have recently won $11,500 in scholarship money she is applying to her loans. In all of her time competing with the Miss Illinois Scholarship Organization, she has earned $19,700 in scholarship money.
Im so excited. I know that this year is such a big responsibility, and Im not going to take it lightly, Hanson said. So, Im going to put my best foot forward into working for the job of Miss America. It would be pretty exciting to bring the Miss America crown back to Illinois and to the Heartland.

Former Miss Americas From Illinois Blast Pageant Organizers Over Emails
CHICAGO (CBS) — Four former Miss America winners from Illinois, including a candidate for Illinois Attorney general, are demanding pageant organizers quit after emails showed that they mocked the bodies and sex lives of former winners and called them vulgar names.
The first reports about the emails to and from Miss America Organization CEO Sam Haskell were published in the HuffPost. Haskell has been suspended, it was announced Friday evening.
READ MORE: 1 Dead, 3 Injured In Shootings On Near West Side“The degrading comments and bullying behavior contained in the emails attributed to Miss America Organization leaders are abhorrent,” said former Miss Illinois and Miss America Erika Harold. “Anyone who participated in or enabled the conduct chronicled in the emails should immediately resign from the Miss America Organization.”
Harold is a Republican candidate to succeed Lisa Madigan as Illinois attorney general.
Another former Miss America from Illinois, actor Kate Shindle, joined Harold in calling for resignations, saying the content of the emails makes her “physically ill.”
Haskell received an e-mail saying it should have been Shindle who died instead of another former Miss America. He responded, “Even in my sadness you can make me laugh.”
READ Miss illinois america University of Chicago To Host Public Memorial For Civil Rights Activist Timuel D. BlackIn another email, Haskell referred to 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan as “huge and gross” and joked that he and three other men were “the only ones” who had not slept with her. The HuffPost article also alleges that Haskell tried to sabotage Hagan and her business.
On Friday, Hagan told CNN she wasn’t shocked by the emails.
“I feel validated because for the longest time I had been trying to tell people that this thing is happening to me and I didn’t have any proof and now I do,” she said. “I feel a big weight off my shoulders.”
Emails also show that Haskell referred to TV anchor Gretchen Carlson, also a former Miss America, as a “snake” after she refused to blacklist Shindle from her show.
Haskell reportedly disliked Shindle because her 2014 book questioned the pageant board’s decision to pay Haskell a $500,000 consulting fee, even though the organization was over $400,000 in the red.
The Miss America Organization says Haskell has apologized, adding it “considers the matter closed.”
