The Feeding Westchester food bank distributed about 11.5 million pounds of food in the year before the onset of COVID-19.
That increased to 21.8 million pounds in the fiscal year during the pandemic.
“We doubled distribution overnight," said Karen Erren, president and chief executive of Feeding Westchester. The organization stocks items at its Elmsford warehouse to distribute to 225 partners, including pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. "As you can well imagine, going back to last March and April [of 2020], which I know we all remember too clearly, the people in our community — that need increased so significantly."
Now, as if the gap between the haves and have-nots wasn't wide already, Westchester and Rockland food banks and pantries are dealing with a kind of additional double-punch:
Inflation forcing the cost of food to spike, and a supply chain that has made the availability of certain items uncertain.
Need: COVID still fills Westchester Food Bank lines
Food pantry: Port Chester facility seeking A Community Thrives grant
Rockland: Proyecto Faro provides food for Rockland County
The price of food for home use rose 5.4% in the past 12 months, according to federal labor data. The consumer price index showed a 12% rise for items such as meat, poultry, fish and eggs.
"Things were tough anyway, and then this inflation is just really making it that much harder," Erren said.
While government programs and COVID relief funds have helped food banks provide for local residents in need, that need hasn't dissipated just because Thanksgiving is over. As the region continues deeper into the holiday season, and into 2022, organizers say more help is needed.
Feeding Westchester receives supplies from a U.S. Department of Agriculture program, as well as through food drives, from retailers and wholesalers, and donations.
The organization pre-COVID had 11,000 volunteers annually, Erren said, but amid COVID restrictions and some people's uncertainty about gathering, fewer people can work inside the Feeding Westchester facility at a given time.
All the while, the line of those seeking assistance is larger since the pre-pandemic days, Erren said.
Feeding Westchester served about 130,000 or 140,000 people a month pre-pandemic. Erren said it's served an average of more than 200,000 a month this calendar year.
Feedback from its partners provided some observations. In recent weeks in White Plains, for instance, food pantry lines grew and most in need cited inflation and food shortages. In Mount Kisco, about 280 people were being assisted weekly for a number of weeks; that that rose to 336 in a more recent week.
On a recent day at the Elmsford distribution center, Feeding Westchester's Nancy Lyons said volunteers were packing bags of items people had prepared in the help-from-home effort for things such as side dishes and desserts that went with Thanksgiving turkeys.
People who want to help can donate funds at Feeding Westchester's website, Erren said. They can also hold food drives. And people can, as part of a help-from-home initiative, put together holiday food bags to donate.
Food banks have gotten some help on the inflation front. One way is through Nourish New York, an $85-million state program that reroutes surplus from farms and dairies to people who need it, through the system of food banks. Gov. Kathy Hochul this month signed legislation making the program permanent.
In Rockland, efforts continued apace to provide both Thanksgiving meals and more general food assistance.
People to People is the county's biggest nonprofit hunger-relief organization, providing food pantry and other assistance programs. According to its website, it provided a turkey and the other fixings to more than 1,200 low-income Rockland families this month.
At Suffern-based Sloatsburg Food Pantry Distribution, "Our numbers of clients has continued to increase," said Joyce Donohue, the pantry's director. "And folks are definitely struggling.”
Before the pandemic, the pantry had about 120 families who would to pick up food twice a month — now it's about 350 to 360, Dononue said.
"At the height of COVID, it was like 405," she said.
Even without issues such as inflation, the Lower Hudson Valley faces a wide gap spanning some of the nation's wealthiest residents and those trying to make ends meet.
Westchester ranked eighth in the country for highest income threshold — at more than $1.3 million — to be considered part of the top 1% of earners, according to a 2018 income inequality report by the Economic Policy Institute. In the northeastern U.S., only New York County — Manhattan — and Fairfield County, Connecticut, ranked higher.
Meanwhile, a United Way of Westchester and Putnam report in 2019 said there are households whose incomes are dominated by housing costs.
For instance, more than 61% of Peekskill residents, the highest share of any Westchester locality, were paying more for housing than is advisable given their income levels when other living expenses are factored in.
Erren recalled how oregon food bank donations from a pantry recently told her about a couple who, despite both adults working full time, spent some 75% of income just on rent.
