Organization Information

Mission Statement

Fighting Hunger Statewide

Description

For over 110 years, Utah Food Bank has stayed true to our objective of serving those in need throughout our state. We work tirelessly with community partners and volunteers to continue making an impact and fulfilling our mission of Fighting Hunger Statewide.

Last year, Utah Food Bank distributed 32.7 million meals via a statewide network of 149 partner agencies located in all 29 counties. In addition to being one of only a handful of food banks that distributes food free-of-charge to partner agencies, we also offer several direct service programs to help the most vulnerable populations in our state - children and seniors. By combining these direct service programs with our emergency food assistance services, we can truly impact the lives of Utahns who live in a world of food insecurity.

As Utah’s only member of Feeding America’s nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, we are proud to be a part of the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization

Our team spent the day putting together supplemental food boxes for seniors. We also had the opportunity to tour the new facility and learn about many different services the food bank provided in the community.

I have been to the Utah Food Bank in past years. The new building is a vast improvement in location, parking, and organization. I brought a group of 25 youth and adults. We were welcomed by friendly staff and given clear directions about what to do. The building was clean and the working conditions comfortable. This was the first time many in our group had worked at the food bank. Thank you for giving them a positive experience.

Utah Food Bank provided a great place to volunteer on Monday evening. They were prepared for us the moment we walked in the door and kept us busy until we left. We had a blast packaging french fries and loved wearing the hair nets. Once we were done with that project we had some extra time to decorate some boxes. What a perfect evening, complete with warm fuzzies!

We really had a lot of fun putting cooking instructions and ingredient statements on to donated pizzas. We were then given a tour of the building. I never realized how big the place was and how much food goes thru there to the various sites. And how big the need in the Salt Lake valley is.

As a company we volenteered with three tasks. We packaged spaghetti that was donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints into 2 lb bags. Then our assistance was needed in getting a mailer out that had been delayed by the post office. Our last task was to decorate boxes that are filled with food and delivered to senior citizens who are home bound. Over all we had a great time volenteering at the food bank and plan to help out in the near future.

My Roommates went on a group date to the Utah Food Bank to volunteer. While there they had us go through the salvaged and damaged foods from the grocery stores and compile boxes of assorted food items for the food pantry’s throughout the state to give out to those in need. We have never done this before and all of us had a great time! Everyone commented about how much they enjoyed our experience. The Food bank staff were organized and fun to work with. The best part was that we all left with a good feeling knowing that we had done something good for not only a great organization but that really will help those in need.

Big Food Stamp Benefit Increase [email protected]

Hannah Weiss knows what it’s like to not have enough food. Years ago, when she was raising children by herself, she depended on public support. “I’ve been where they’re at. I know it’s hard and I just want to give back,” she said.

That’s what led her to be the volunteer director of the South Valley Jesus Feeds Food Pantry, a branch of the Utah Food Bank. She’s assisted by co-leader Susan Harrell and a team of volunteers.

Wednesdays are spent stocking the pantry’s shelves with donations. Thursdays are when clients come to have their shopping lists fulfilled. Clients are received by appointment only for their privacy, because the pantry is small, and so they don’t have to wait in line.

Prior to the pandemic, clients were invited into the pantry to shop for themselves. These days they drive up, present their shopping list, and their order is filled curbside by volunteers wearing masks and gloves. “The way cit bank reviews been doing it is so safe. We can absolutely alleviate their fears. All they have to do is show up once and realize. We’ll stay that way until such a time that the Utah Food Bank changes their guidelines,” Weiss said.

The pantry hasn’t seen a huge increase in clients as has happened across the nation with the pandemic and accompanying economic downturn. But Weiss attributes that to several factors. The main reason is that the pantry is small and utah food bank appointment only.

“Other pantries are take a number, stand in line, and hope that there’s something at the hotels near university at buffalo of the day,” Weiss said. Secondly, she said there’s often a decrease in need at this time of year because people get their tax returns and don’t come in for a month or two, a trend the Utah Food Bank also sees. “But then they come back, especially when the kids get out of school.”

She gives credit to the Utah Food Bank. “They’ve done a wonderful job of managing distribution during COVID,” she said, adding that the federal government has been sending more food during utah food bank pandemic. Lastly, Weiss said that people in Utah bank of commerce atm account number not greedy, that they’re humble and want their hotels near university at buffalo met, but they don’t want to take anything from someone else who might be worse off. That means there continues to be plenty available to those in need.

The food pantry would like to give a special “shout out” to the South Jordan Sam’s Club manager Scott Northridge. “They’re always there if we need donations, especially around the holidays when we’re trying to give everyone a good Thanksgiving or Christmas,” Weiss said.

She admitted that sometimes it’s difficult to witness such need. “Especially when some of our clients are ill, it’s hard to watch them struggle physically in addition to their financial hardship.”

But, more often than not, what happens at the food pantry is inspiring.

“We have people that come in with needs, and like clockwork, we have everything on their list and they are literally in tears. That’s what makes us thrive is seeing that happen, utah food bank it happens consistently. It’s just here, whatever they need. That’s faith promoting right there,” she said.

If you are in need of assistance or if you’d like to volunteer, call 801-688-7251.
