At any bank, if you have a low credit score, you’re only likely to get a credit limit increase if you’re getting close to your existing credit limit. So if you got that email, you probably had a few thousand dollars of Capital One credit card debt at an interest rate of at least 20 percent. That implies you were probably paying Capital One around $40 in interest per month or more. You might want or need to borrow more money on top of what you’ve already borrowed, but I always thought it was a little bit sick for us to be telling people to “enjoy” their higher credit line. It felt more than a little like shouting, “Enjoy getting into more debt, suckers!” before disappearing in a cloud of smoke and speeding off in a Tesla.

In my coworkers’ defense, nearly everyone agreed with me that repeating “more...more...more” in that email was redundant, if not manipulative, and we eventually changed the text. But the pitch still represented an irreconcilable gap: While the recipients of the email might, at best, regard it as one additional debt instrument to deploy for the next financial emergency lying in wait, Capital One employees must have imagined that borrowers were positively excited to take on more debt as soon as possible.

Sadly, this latter view was not completely unreasonable. As Scott Schuh and Scott Fulford have shown in a paper for the Federal Reserve of Boston, people who get credit limit increases tend to keep their “utilization” constant. In other words: If a person is carrying a $1,500 balance when they have a $3,000 credit limit, you’d expect them to start carrying a $4,000 balance if the limit is raised to $8,000. If most people use the full credit-limit increases they are offered, the thinking goes, that must mean that most people want to borrow more money. If you lend them more money, you are “meeting customers’ needs.”

Because the borrower’s pain was not at the forefront for analysts, lingo like “pBad” (the percentage of people who can’t repay their loans), “second-order risk” (when customers who would have been able to repay a small loan default because they borrowed more than they could handle), “flow rates” (the percentage of people who will miss the next payment), “HBRs” (high-balance revolvers, or people who have a lot of debt) is not analogous to a military planner referring to “collateral damage” to talk about dead civilians. It is far more abstract.

Message: [Account name] needs your attention (CC-901/CC-902/CC-903)

Overview

When attempting to update your accounts, you may see the error message:

Message: [Account name] needs your attention (CC-901/CC-902/CC-903)

This message occurs when:

  • Your security token has expired and you need to reenter your account credentials. This may appear as CC-901 in the One Step Update Summary.
  • You have login information that needs to be refreshed. This may appear as CC-903 in the One Step Update Summary.

Before you begin: If you have multiple accounts

If you have multiple accounts with one of the financial institutions updating their connection method, you'll need to authorize your accounts for each instance of the financial institution individually.

For example, if you have a checking account with Capital One 360, and a credit card account with Capital One - Credit Cards, you would need to go through the process twice, one for each instance of that financial institution.  Don't worry–Quicken will prompt you if you need to go through the process more than once.

If you do need to go through the migration process more than once, it's important that you don't uncheck any accounts listed on the authorization screen, unless you don't want to see the account at all in Quicken

:

Message: [Account name] needs your attention (CC-901/CC-902/CC-903)

If you uncheck accounts during the process, this will revoke your authorization, and prevent the accounts from updating.  If you've unchecked accounts, you can just follow this FAQ for Windows, or this FAQ for Mac, to authorize them again for download into Quicken.

NOTE: If you have multiple accounts with just one instance of the financial institution, you'll only need to go through the process once.

To resolve this issue

Capital One is a newer bank with an actual living founder — which is a rarity. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a powerhouse. It’s now one of America’s 10 biggest banks, which means that it has a large number of customers who use its banking systems. If you’re one of those customers, you’ll find that logging in to your Capital One bank account is quick and easy. All you need to get started are your username and password.

Here’s a quick look at what you’ll find in this guide to using your Capital One login:

How To Log In to Your Capital One Bank Account From a Computer

On the Capital One homepage, you’ll see a place to sign in to your account in the top right corner. Type your username and password into their respective fields.

You can also click the “Remember Me” option to make it easier to log in next time. However, if you’re using a shared computer or public Wi-Fi, avoid saving your login credentials as it can put your personal information at risk.

How To Log In to Your Capital One Bank Account From a Mobile Phone or Tablet

Having your banking information at your fingertips could help you become more proactive in taking charge of your finances. Thankfully, that’s easy to do if you have a Capital One account. You can download the app to both Apple and Android devices easily.

Once you’ve downloaded and opened the app, you’ll be prompted to log in. After you’ve logged in, you’ll have the ability to deposit checks, set automatic bill pay and see a history of transactions at any time.

How To Retrieve a Forgotten Username or Password

Everyone loses their password or forgets their username at one point or another, but thankfully Capital One makes it easy to retrieve your information and stay safe. In order to verify your identity, you’ll have to provide Capital One the following personal information:

  • 877-442-3764, for Capital One online banking assistance

If you’re calling internationally, you’ll need to first get in touch with an international operator. Tell them you’re calling the U.S. collect and provide this number: 804-934-2001. When asked for a name, just say you’re a Capital One customer.

What Are the Benefits of Online Banking?

Online banking has many benefits, but perhaps the largest one is the feeling of instant satisfaction you’ll get from using it. Instead of having to make an in-person visit to Capital One to confirm your balance or send physical checks for important bills out to the post office (where they may or may not reach their destination), you can breathe just a bit easier with online banking.

Using online banking, you can set up automatic bill pay, check your account balance and even schedule a transfer from your checking to your savings. That’s potentially hours of work — including travel time — if you’re doing physical banking. But with online banking, you can complete these tasks within minutes.

What’s the minimum age to be an authorized user?

Some parents want to give their child’s credit history an early start by adding them as an authorized user to their credit cards before they reach adulthood. But before you add your child to your card, you need to consider card issuer rules.

At an appropriate age, adding your child as an authorized user on your credit card can help them build credit, provide access to funds in an emergency and offer lessons on using an account responsibly, says Brette Sember, author of “The Complete Credit Repair Kit.”

“They’re going to be using credit for the rest of their lives, so it makes sense that you as a parent should teach them how to use it carefully from an early age,” she says.

Can you add a minor or child as an authorized user?

Most major card issuers allow you to add a minor as an authorized user. Some issuers impose a minimum age, while others don’t – but a few cards prohibit cardholders from adding minors altogether.

The question of whether you can add your child to your card as an authorized user hinges on age.

Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, Wells Fargo and Citibank have no minimum age requirements for adding authorized users to credit card accounts. However, Chase does include fees on some of its cards when adding authorized users. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve has a $75 fee per year per user added to the account.

While some parents might be tempted to put a newborn on their best credit card as an authorized user so they can have 18 years of credit history before applying for their own credit lines, there’s no need to rush.

First, it’s not necessary because a few years is plenty of time for a kid to build a credit history and an excellent score. Also, adding a child too early can backfire. If you run into financial difficulties and stop sign in to my capital one credit card account payments on that card and your credit tanks as a result, your kid’s credit will take a hit, too, unless you remove them from the card.

What you need to know about adding authorized users to your credit card

Before adding your child to your card, consider the sign in to my capital one credit card account and outs of how the issuer handles authorized users to make sure you (and your child) get the desired benefits without getting hit by high fees.

Here are key factors to consider when adding authorized users to your credit card:

  • Almost all cards from major issuers allow you to add an authorized user for free, but a few premium cards charge a hefty fee. Platinum Card® from American Express cardholders must pay a flat $175 fee each year for adding up to three additional card guests, then $175 more for each additional Platinum Card after.  The Chase Sapphire Reserve charges a $75 annual fee for each additional authorized user card.
  • Most major issuers report an authorized user account on the guest’s credit files. However, some issuers report both positive and negative information (such as late payments) associated with the main account on the authorized user’s credit, while others report only positive items.
  • American Express is the only major issuer that issues authorized user cards with different card numbers and allows the primary cardholder to set spending limits for, and receive alerts about, the authorized user’s spending.

In a pinch, Discover offers its “Freeze it” option sign in to my capital one credit card account temporarily freeze and unfreeze your account in seconds online or on the mobile app. This could be used to halt all purchases if, for example, your child loses their card. However, the downside is it also freezes your own line of credit at the same time.

How to add someone as an authorized user to your credit card

Since most credit card issuers have online banking for account management, you can usually add an authorized user online.

  1. Log in to your credit card account profile.
  2. Find the account or financial services hub page for your credit card.
  3. Look for an option called “Order a card for someone else” or “Add user to account.”
  4. Follow the issuer’s process, providing name, date of birth (if required) and Social Security number and adding any spending limits or restrictions to the card.
  5. Once complete, the card with the user’s name should arrive in the mail.

If you’re having trouble adding your child or someone else to your credit card as an authorized user online, you can also call the number on the back of your credit card to speak with a representative and get the process started.

How to remove authorized users from your credit card

Eventually, the day will come when it’s time to remove your child from your card.

You might decide to remove them if they use your card irresponsibly, but ideally, it will be because they’re ready to get their own card.

At age 18, a young adult can legally enter into a contract and perhaps get a card. However, the CARD Act of 2009 made it harder for people under 21 to get credit cards, and they must show proof of income or get a co-signer. Unlike adding your child as an authorized user, most credit card issuers don’t have an online process for this. Typically, you’re required to call in to remove an authorized user.

  1. Take out your credit card and call the customer service number on the back of the card.
  2. Enter your card number, SSN or account number to verify your information.
  3. Follow the phone prompts to get to a customer service representative or account services.
  4. Ask to remove an authorized user from the account.
  5. Inform the authorized user that they were removed from the account and that their card is no longer active. Typically, the removal is instant and the card is immediately deactivated.

Pros and cons of adding a child or a minor to your card

Pros of adding your child as an authorized user

  • Teaches financial responsibility before adulthood: Your child can learn more about how credit cards and billing cycles work when using a card on their own.
  • Establishes a credit profile earlier in life: Instead of waiting until they are 18, your child can start building a positive credit history as long as the card is used responsibly.
  • Cards can be used in an emergency: If an emergency pops up and you can’t be there to resolve it, a credit card might be able to help them with a flat tire, empty gas tank or even an emergency grocery trip.

Cons of adding your child as an authorized user

  • Fees may apply for each authorized user: Sign in to my capital one credit card account card issuers charge annual fees per person added as an authorized user.
  • Their spending may affect your credit utilization and credit score: Your credit utilization ratio may rise with the addition of someone else spending on your account. Be sure to set limits and restrictions on when the card can and can’t be used.
  • Additional cards create more risk of theft and fraud: Another user on your account means more risk of credit card fraud via unsafe online shopping practices or simply misplacing the credit card in public.

Credit card authorized users FAQs

Will adding my child to my credit card hurt my credit score?

Generally, adding your child to your credit card will not hurt your credit score, as long as they use the card responsibly, and you keep an eye on your credit utilization ratio and make timely payments on your account.

What is the cost of adding an authorized user?

Most card issuers do not charge fees for additional users on credit card accounts. Bank of America, Barclays and Capital One do not impose fees for adding authorized users. However, Chase and American Express charge fees on their premium credit cards for additional users.

Does adding an authorized user help city bank lubbock texas phone number credit?

Yes, if you have responsible credit card habits, then adding an authorized user will help their credit. Your credit card account will be added to the user’s credit report and positive payment history. And your credit utilization ratio and account age will be factored into their credit score.

How many authorized users can I add to a single card account?

It depends on the card issuer. Discover limits the number of authorized users to five, while some card issuers don’t specify limits. However, some card issuers do require authorized users be family members who live at the same address.

Is an authorized user relationship or a joint account holder better?

It depends on the situation. If you’re opening an account to share with a partner or spouse, than a joint account holder relationship may be the way to go. However, note that few issuers still offer joint credit card accounts. If you are just extending your credit line to someone else or want to help a family member build credit, then an authorized user relationship is likely the right choice.

Bottom line

Typically, the minimum age to be an authorized user is 13, but some card issuers like Capital One, Citibank and Wells Fargo don’t specify the minimum age. However, you shouldn’t add just anyone under 18 years old as an authorized user on your credit card just to help them build credit or give them access to your credit line.

When adding a minor or child as an authorized user on a credit card, make sure to set boundaries and restrictions on spending or use. Teach them how to responsibly handle a credit card and make sure they understand the financial impact of charging plastic and how it could affect both of your credit scores.

How many Capital One credit cards can you have?

{"menuItems":[{"label":"Capital One credit card limitation rules","anchorName":"#capital-one-credit-card-limitation-rules"},{"label":"Compare Capital One credit cards","anchorName":"#compare-capital-one-credit-cards"},{"label":"Bottom line","anchorName":"#bottom-line"},{"label":"Frequently asked questions","anchorName":"#frequently-asked-questions"}]}

Generally, you can only own two Capital One credit cards. Because of this limitation, it’s important you only apply for the Capital One cards you really want.

Capital One limits consumer credit cards to two cards per individual. Technically, you can have more than two Capital One cards but for some of the cards, Capital One doesn’t accept new applications.

Here’s how some cardholders have more than two Capital One credit cards:

  • Old credit card accounts. They already had more than two Capital One cards when this rule was implemented in 2011. If they decided to keep their cards, the rule didn’t affect them.
  • Capital One acquired banks. Individuals who held credit cards by banks bought by Capital One, such as HSBC, don’t count toward the two-card rule.
  • Cobranded credit cards. Cobranded cards issued by Sign in to my capital one credit card account One and a sign in to my capital one credit card account don’t count toward the rule. For example, you can get a GM BuyPower Business Card from Capital One® in addition to your two Capital One cards without conflicting the rule.
  • Secured credit cards. Capital One’s secured cards don’t count toward the rule. If you started with a secured Capital One credit card and managed to build your credit, you are still eligible for two more Capital One credit card slots.
  • Business credit cards. You can freely add Capital One business credit cards to your personal card selection if you need more than two without conflicting the two-card rule.

Is it possible to have more than two Capital One credit cards?

Some Finder readers claim they have applied for more than two Capital One credit cards after Capital One imposed this rule, and they claim they were approved.

Others claim that this rule only applies to Capital One’s subprime cards:

  • Capital One Platinum Credit Card
  • Journey Student Rewards from Capital One
  • Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card

If you don’t have two Capital One credit cards, you can safely apply for one of their cards. But if you already have two, consider applying for a credit card from another provider.

Is it possible to combine Capital One credit cards?

Capital One used to allow combining credit cards they issue. This was a good way to combine two cards’ balances and credit limits into one and to leave room for another credit card application.

But this option is temporarily disabled. Call Capital One and ask to combine credit cards in case they’ve resumed this practice.

If you can’t combine credit cards but you still want a better card, consider product change. Capital One often allows its customers to change from one credit card to another without actually applying for the card.

Capital One doesn’t allow for more than two consumer credit cards per individual. But you can bypass this rule by applying for a cobranded credit card or asking for a product change.

But if this sounds like a hassle without meeting your financial needs, compare cards from other providers until you find the right card for your wallet.

  • How can I do a product change?
Capital One often sends online notifications with targeted credit card offers. If you do get one, complete the process online or call Capital One. If you don’t get a notification, call customer support and ask if you’re eligible for a product change.
  • When can I apply for my second Capital One card?
