Front lawns across the United States are now studded with colorful declarations of children’s accomplishments, as they graduate from high school, middle school, elementary school, and even preschool. With the picture of a mascot or simply bold letters spelling out “Congratulations,” the names of millions of schoolchildren are on display for friends and neighbors—and identity thieves—to see.

The yard signs come from a good place; they’re a way to publicly salute kids of all ages, robbed of graduation ceremonies and other end-of-the-academic-year festivities due to COVID-19 shutdowns. But these publicly displayed replacements can be catnip for scammers, who take the children’s names to the bank.

Literally.

Con artists use stolen identities to take out loans, open new credit cards and spending accounts, commit tax fraud, get healthcare, and upgrade utilities—all while the victims are still watching the Disney Channel or being toilet trained. All of these leave the children with destroyed credit histories and, in many cases, emptied bank accounts.

“Every time I go by, the hairs on the back of my neck go up. It’s a gift to that low-level, street-level, opportunistic identity thief,” says Neal O’Farrell, executive director of the California-based Identity Theft Council, who’s seen the signs in his own neighborhood while walking his dog.

More than 1 million kids under 18 become the victims of identity theft every year, according to Robert Chappell, the author of the book Child Identity Theft: What Every Parent Needs to Know.

Experts expect the amount of identity thefts to jump now. Research has shown that this kind of fraud spikes during an economic downturn—in this case, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shuttered parts of the economy, left millions of people jobless, and ruined investments from stock portfolios to real estate.

A jackpot for ID thieves

Nothing is juicier to identity thieves than information about children. Getting the social security number of a minor is truly hitting the jackpot, because in the vast majority of cases, it takes years before anyone realizes this precious information has been snatched. The truth comes out when the children are old enough to apply for credit cards or get their own cellphone accounts.

Even without a child’s social security number, plenty of damage can be done. Some scammers blend bits of real and made-up information to craft new, fake identities—what’s called synthetic identity theft. From lawn signs, they can garner a first and last name, address, and approximate year of birth (assuming, say, 5 or 6 years old for a kindergarten grad and 17 or 18 for a high-schooler).

Scammers also may use those personal data points to reach out to the grads’ families. They pose as banks with discounted car loans for recent grads or companies offering free presents or gift cards for the college- or high school-bound freshman—ruses that would then have the con artists ask for a social security number for “confirmation.”

“If I were a creative identity thief, I’d drive around the neighborhood and take down all this information,” says O’Farrell. “It’s creating dossiers on families that left their identity on the front lawn for you. It’s perfect.”

In front of Andre Berot Spring’s home in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, are three signs celebrating her high school senior, whom she describes as “dejected” about her upended final year. On the ends of the row are “Council Rock North High School Class of 2020” and “Rice University Bound!” which she made. The middle sign—which crows, “Congrats Class of 2020 Senior Amelia Spring,” and features a professional headshot of the teen—came from the school.

“I consciously didn’t put her name on it . . .  Someone’s driving by [and they would know] there’s an 18-year-old girl living here,'” Spring says. But she changed her mind and muted her concerns when the third sign arrived. “I saw everyone else in the neighborhood doing it. We didn’t want to be stick-in-the-mud parents.”

Not everyone sees cause for concern, even for the youngest of graduates. Security expert Robert Siciliano explains that using a yard sign to steal a minor’s identity takes a lot of work.

“The way a bad guy would get the social security number of that child is to call the house and maybe pose as the Social Security Administration or IRS or FBI or local law enforcement,” he says. “The low-hanging fruit isn’t the yard sign with the kid’s last name. It’s the bad guy heading to the dark web and buying 10,000 names, addresses, and social security numbers for $1 each with a stolen card.”

Chappell disagrees. He says even seemingly harmless yard signs can sometimes help enterprising scammers connect the dots.

“You don’t need to know all the information in order to be successful at conducting identity theft on children,” Chappell says. “Don’t give more information than you need to. Try to find the balance between proud and being unwise about their personal data.”

Large Yard Sign Greetings Bring Joy During Social Distancing

HAYS COUNTY, Texas — A small business in Hays County is showing a big presence in the community with large yard signs that are meant to bring joy to those who maybe can’t celebrate surrounded by family and friends during this time of social distancing.

  • The original Card My Yard started in Austin in 2014
  • Company expanded throughout the nation
  • The signs can be put up quietly at night

The original Card My Yard started in Austin in 2014 and has since expanded into more than 75 franchises across 20 states. Right now, the company is seeing an uptick in rentals due to the coronavirus unfortunately cancelling many in-person gatherings. There are franchises all over Texas, including ones serving New Braunfels, Round Rock and Boerne.

Card My Yard Buda-Kyle franchise co-owners Krissy Spruill and Mercedes Ojeda say on a typical week, they would put up five or six yard signs — now they're up to five or six a night.

"We're thankful because our other businesses are completely tanking," Spruill said. "I mean completely gone under. And so for us, it's just a huge blessing. We’re just so grateful that we still at least have this rolling right now."

The pair used to be able to put yard signs up while kids were at school, to surprise them once they got home. Now, with school out, Spruill and Ojeda are having to become "sign ninjas" at night and early morning to ensure no one sees them at work.

"Mercedes got us headlamps and at first I was like, ‘no way we're not wearing that.’ But you have to have them on, I mean it is like pitch black outside," Spruill said. "And then the whole goal is obviously to not be seen, so we usually park a little bit away and we're real quiet, we don't talk the whole time, we already have the full setup down and ready on what we're going to do and we've pretty much got it down to a science at this point. And we just very quickly get it done as fast as we can, straighten everything and hop in the car and drive out."

Spruill and Ojeda run the franchise in the zip codes for San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Driftwood and Manchaca. They say right now, they're trying to make it a point to cross-advertise on social media for small businesses in the area, and even donate signs for a day.

"We try to make an effort to do a donation of signs periodically, as much as we can. I mean sometimes we're sold out and we can’t, but as much as we can we'll go. We went and set one up at a local automotive store up the street. And it's just encouraging words, that one says 'choose joy,'" Spruill said.

For Buda parents Jessie and Cody Clayton, there's nothing quite like having to break the news to your kid that a birthday party can't happen.

"Honestly, [Joey] was very upset. He's very upset. We've had a couple, maybe two emotional nights of, you know, just not understanding. And he's like I just want my friends to come over and celebrate," Jessie Clayton said. "And so we really wanted to do something special, not just let the day go by."

The Claytons knew of the Card My Yard signs because of a connection to Spruill and Ojeda, and thought it would be the perfect way to make sure Joey was still celebrated. The family threw a drive-by parade and had a large "Happy 10th Birthday Joey" sign front and center.

"He really wanted to see his friends and so I thought having maybe a big sign in the yard and a parade of friends coming by, we could at least see their faces and wave at them," Jessie Clayton said.

"He's pretty resilient, I think he gets that we can't get together like we normally would," Cody Clayton said. "[He's] so special to us, we just wanted him to have something to show him that we love him and that his friends love him and that even though we can't get together in person, we can still have his friends come by and wave and say hi to him."

Needless to say, Joey approved of the big display.

"I was surprised. I didn't really expect that," Joey Clayton said. "I thought it would be like a little sign. When my mom said come see the sign, and I saw that I was like what? It was big. That was amazing."

Card My Yard Buda-Kyle recently set up a sign saying "You Are Strong, We Love You" for a terminal brain cancer patient in the Plum Creek neighborhood who is finished with radiation. The patient, Jimmy, was welcomed by a parade of people and the sign from his family and friends all showing support.

"Right now, everybody's sad. We're just trying to do our part I guess to spread some joy," Spruill said.

"We're just feeling for everyone in the community, especially small businesses. I definitely liked a pledge I saw recently that said after this is over, they're only going to shop local, eat local, buy local for one year after this. And I’m in 100 percent," Ojeda said. "We gotta get everybody back on track."

5.  Jessica Stanley recalled receiving a heartfelt call from a retirement home resident who received a Card My Yard greeting for his 100th birthday. “Amy and I texted each other, both crying,” Jessica Stanley said. “It was just the sweetest thing to hear these people still feel celebrated and loved when nobody could come and visit them. We love what we get to do.”

It has sustained us through this hard time of my husband’s job loss,’” Jessica Stanley said. “That is something we don’t take lightly, that brings us so much joy, to know that we’ve created something that allows families to have additional income and be able to sustain their lifestyle through something like COVID.”

7.  James Stanley said the Card My Yard co-founders were initially concerned about the effect of the pandemic on their business. “We thought, let’s just see what happens in the next two weeks, three weeks,” he said. “My hope was that we would stay where we were.

Leigh Gass, who was raised in Texas, moved to Santa Clara’s Rivermark neighborhood with her family back in February. According to Gass, yard cards, which are ensembles of large decorative signs and messages placed outside homes and establishments, have been very popular in Texas in the last few years. Because of the pandemic, the culture of yard cards has grown even further in popularity.

“I was looking for a yard card here but didn’t find anyone who did it in this area,” said Gass, owner of Party Yardy. “So, I saw a business opportunity. I looked into franchises. There are several. But I decided that their structure was not right for me so I decided to go for it independently.”

Gass looked online for suppliers of yard cards. She found multiple Facebook groups of independent yard carders. In these groups, she found advice about running such a business and information about suppliers. She ordered a few basic items, and in October, Party Yardy was born.

“I didn’t design most of the things I have,” Gass said. “The only thing I designed is the seasonal display, which I call the Friendship Flurry. It’s a snowman and a lot of snowflakes all around it. That gets delivered with a treat of hot chocolate bombs made by CocoBombSJ. I’m offering this Friendship Flurry until the end of January.”

According to Gass, the signs are made of corrugated plastic, which have holes to allow for stakes to slide into them.

“They’re made of the same material that political signs are made of,” Gass said. “They hold up in rain and can be outside what is the routing number for first interstate bank being damaged, although wind can damage them.”

Gass is a former accountant. Moving into this new career, Gass has studied the art of arranging yard cards by viewing photos of yard cards that others post.

“For me, I think the accounting comes into play because I think things need to balance,” Gass said. “I’m always looking for balance in my signs. If I put something on the left side, I need something on the right side to balance it out. I feel that might be different card my yard california what a lot of yard carders do.”

Right now, Gass is setting up yard cards in the 10-mile radius outside of the Rivermark neighborhood. Gass begins the work of card my yard california up cards outside of homes early in the morning.

“I’m up by 5:30 a.m. and I’m out the door before 6 a.m.,” she said. “I want people to see this first thing in the morning.”

“My goal does ally auto accept credit card payments just to spread joy,” Gass continued. “I never intended to create any kind of business empire. I want to keep myself busy, make other people happy and hopefully make a little money in the process. You don’t know what life holds for you and you have to be able to roll with the punches.”
