Pokémon Trading Card Game Live Will Be Free-To-Play On Mobile & PC

In the first official release since Pokémon TCG Online, Pokémon Trading Card Game Live has been revealed as a free-to-play video game.

In a surprise reveal, Pokémon Trading Card Game Livehas been announced as a free-to-play video game coming to mobile, PC, and Mac. While the mainline Pokémon series has a rich history of video game releases on Nintendo consoles leading back to the franchise's inception, the Pokémon Trading Card Game (or Pokémon TCG) has gotten few official adaptations bringing the game from tabletops to screens.

While it also isn't available for Nintendo Switch, Pokémon TCG Online is the most recent digital game to officially adapt the classic, ever-evolving card game. It was originally released in 2011 as a free browser game, but it later was given its own executable and ported to bank of eastman magnolia state bank same platforms Pokémon Trading Card Game Live is targeting. However, that means the tabletop game hasn't gotten a proper release on a Nintendo console since the Game Boy Color's Pokémon Trading Card Game, and it seems that trend isn't ending with the latest rendition.

A Monday trailer shared on The Official Pokémon YouTube Channel showed Pokémon Trading Card Game Live in action for the first time, and it's a full-blown recreation of the Pokémon TCG for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. A free-to-play card game in the vein of Pokémon TCG OnlinePokémon Trading Card Game Live is a one-to-one recreation of the Pokémon TCG, featuring all the same rules and including online player-versus-player matches. According to the official Pokémon TCGsite, no concrete release or rollout date has been set, but the game will be "available soon." Players can transfer cards from Sword and Shield and Sun and Moon (Lost Thunder through Cosmic Eclipse) sets and use them in-game at launch, while earlier Sun and Moon and Black and White cards will be transferable but nonplayable until undated post-launch updates enable them.

There's been no confirmation yet if Pokémon Trading Card Game Live will implement crossplay and cross-progression between mobile devices and/or PC, but it may not be a stretch to expect that kind of flexibility from the usually platform-exclusive franchise nowadays. The new Pokémon Unite MOBA will feature crossplay between Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms when it launches on the Apple and Google Play stores, potentially setting a precedent for future free-to-play Pokémon games like Trading Card Game Live.

Notably missing from the Pokémon TCG adaptation's platform lineup is Nintendo Switch, a disappointing but hardly unsurprising omission. While it's not clear why Pokémon Trading Card Game Live would skip Nintendo's premier home console-handheld hybrid despite Pokémon's intrinsic ties to the hardware line, it could still be possible for the card game to finally make its way to Switch if the upcoming release is installed by enough players.

How To Play The Pokémon TCG During Quarantine

Card games are a social experience, and the Pokémon Trading Card game is no exception. While quarantine has made it difficult for card lovers to congregate and play their favorite games, there are options in the age of the Internet.

The Pokémon TCG has an online counterpart - Pokémon TCG Online. It's exactly what it sounds like: it's an online service that allows you to play the card game virtually. What makes Pokémon TCG Online so awesome is that it allows you to challenge players from every corner of the globe entirely for free. You can also amass cards and expand your collection using several methods from log-in bonuses to manually purchasing decks and booster packs in the TCG online store.

For individuals who prize their physical cards, don't worry - you can scan them into the online service using the codes included in the card packaging to add these cards to your digital collection. You can do this by entering the codes on the Pokémon Fan Club website.

The next step is to get your friends to download the game if they already haven't. As previously mentioned, sign-up is entirely free and you're gifted four basic decks that you can use to start your TCG Online experience. Since cards are easy to collect, frequent players should have no trouble building their collections. What's not to like about that?

For more competitive players, the TCG Online allows you to theorycraft without limitations while adhering to the game's rules. Using the cards at your disposal, you can build entirely new decks to optimize your chances of winning and creating a more challenging aspect of the game. You can initiate a trade with friends and strangers by selecting the cards you want to part with. The steps to creating a private trade and public trade are different, so it's best if you learn to differentiate the two before moving forward. You can check out this guide here for specific instructions.

So yeah, it's totally possible to play Pokémon TCG even with the limitations imposed by COVID-19. Pokémon TCG Online's entirely virtual presence makes it a game that transcends physical limitations. While it might be the only way for Pokémon TCG players to enjoy the game, at least it's an excellent alternative. Better than nothing, right?
