A $500 welcome bonus and no annual fee: The new U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card

It seems like new and revamped rewards cards are appearing on the scene every day, and the latest entrant is the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard®.

The new U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card earns up to 3% cash back on a variety of purchases, but does not charge an annual fee, making it a solid choice for some small-business owners. That said, you might do better with one of its competitors depending on where your business spends the most money, or if you’re looking for rewards beyond simple cash back.

Here are the details on the new U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card, and how it stacks up against the competition.

U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card details

The new U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards World Elite Mastercard has launched with an interesting welcome offer and earning rates many small-business owners should appreciate.

Current welcome offer

Earn $500 cash back after spending $4,500 on purchases in the first 150 days of opening your account. Plus, get 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 billing cycles (after that it adjusts to a variable APR of 13.99%-22.99%).

Annual fee

$0

Earning rates

The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card earns 3% cash back on eligible purchases at:

It earns 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases, and there are no spending caps.

$100 software credit

Cardholders earn an annual $100 statement credit for recurring software subscription expenses such as FreshBooks or QuickBooks.

World Elite Mastercard benefits

As a World Elite Mastercard, the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card offers various perks standard, including:

  • Cellphone protection of up to $800 per claim, two claims per year, and $1,000 per year in coverage against theft or damage.
  • A $5 Lyft credit when you take at least three rides in a month.
  • A complimentary three-month DoorDash DashPass membership.
  • ShopRunner membership for free two-day shipping from over 100 retailers.
  • Bookings through the Mastercard Luxury Hotel & Resorts portfolio.
  • World Elite Mastercard concierge service.

Is the U.S. Bank Cash Triple Cash Rewards card worth it?

For a card with no annual fee, the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card has a lot going for it.

First, that introductory financing of 0% APR for the first 15 billing cycles (then 13.99% to 22.99% variable APR) can come in handy if you have purchases or balance transfers that you need to pay off over time. Just be wary of doing so since your business credit score might take a hit for carrying a balance.

The card is a decent earner, too, raking in 3% cash back on some pretty broad categories including office supply stores, restaurants, gas stations and cellphone service providers.

If your business uses software subscriptions like QuickBooks, then earning a $100 annual statement credit is just icing on the cake. You also might want to consider applying for this card if you already carry business credit cards from other major issuers, such as Amex or Chase, but are looking to branch out.

That said, the card’s welcome bonus isn’t very compelling. You have to spend $4,500 to get a mere $500 cash back. It’s still a lower spending requirement than the high-end business cards out there, but something to consider.

Finally, if your business doesn’t spend much in the card’s bonus categories, you’re probably not going to find much value here either since it only earns 1% cash back beyond them.

Alternatives to the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card

If you’re in the market for a small-business credit card, you might want to consider some of the other options currently available, because of higher welcome offers, better ongoing earning or superior benefits.

Ink Business Cash Credit Card

Depending on your spending habits, this card might be a more natural fit. Like the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards World Elite Mastercard, the Ink Business Cash does not charge an annual fee.

It’s currently offering $750 cash back after you spend $7,500 on purchases in the first three months of account opening, and is offering 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months (13.24%-19.24% variable APR after that).

It earns 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases each account anniversary year at:

  • Office supply stores.
  • Internet, cable and phone services.

It earns 2% each back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases each account anniversary year at:

  • Gas stations.
  • Restaurants.

It earns 1% cash back on everything else.

The bonus categories are eerily similar to those offered by the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card, and though there are spending caps, if you can max out those 5% categories and the introductory bonus with this card, you might come out ahead.

Also remember that points earned with the Ink Business Cash can be combined with those from a card that earns transferable Ultimate Rewards points, such as the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card, and you can then transfer the points to the program’s airline and hotel partners, which opens up all kinds of opportunities simple cash back might not.

Bottom line

It’s never a bad thing when a new rewards credit card appears on the scene. The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards card offers a strong earning formula, great introductory financing and the appeal of charging no annual fee. That said, depending on your typical business expenses and the types of rewards you’re interested in earning, you might be better off with one of its competitors.

The bonus Buddy Pass entitles a companion to accompany the Primary Cardholder for a $0 base fare, when a published Economy Class fare marketed and operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or under the Air Canada Express brand is booked for travel wholly within North America. The pass is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. The pass is valid towards a new booking only, and not valid on existing reservations. Bookings must be made directly with Air Canada, via aircanada.com, the Air Canada Mobile App, or through the Air Canada call center (“Air Canada Reservations”). Valid for one round-trip for a companion when travelling on the same itinerary and booked at the same time as Primary Cardholder. Maximum one companion pass may be used per booking. If one-way travel is booked, the pass will be deemed fully used and the return portion of travel is forfeited. Total pricing varies based on itinerary booked. Primary Cardholder may use the pass only once for travel wholly within North America, which is defined as Canada, the United States (including Hawaii), and Mexico. Companion will be responsible to pay all applicable taxes, fees, and charges that apply above the base fare. Valid for travel at any time with no blackout periods. Also valid against the purchase of fares on sale. Companion will be booked into same fare brand as Primary Cardholder and will receive all applicable benefits and services associated with that fare brand. The pass may not be used with premium cabin fares, or in conjunction with Aeroplan flight rewards, Flight Pass, group travel bookings, Air Canada Vacations bookings, or any other discounts or promotion codes. The pass must be redeemed at time of purchase of a ticket, and if multiple companion passes are available for the Aeroplan number, the pass that would expire first will be used. Booking must be made before the pass expiry date; travel may occur after the pass expiry date subject to flight schedule availability at the time of booking. The pass may only be used as described, cannot be transferred and has no monetary or exchange value. Changes or cancellations are allowed according to the fare rules of the fare purchased. Changes and cancellations must be made at the same time for both guests, and failure to do so may result in a forfeit of the companion pass. If during a change or cancellation the pass is reinstated in the Primary Cardholders account, the original expiry date will take effect and the pass may then be considered expired. In the event of a change or cancellation, travellers are required to pay all applicable fees based on the fare type purchased for each ticket, plus the difference in fare, if applicable and all applicable taxes, fees, and charges that apply above the base fare. Companions who are members of the Aeroplan program or other partner frequent flyer programs will not be eligible to accumulate points or miles for the ticket issued in exchange for the companion pass. Aeroplan Elite Status benefits and upgrades are applicable if the traveller holds appropriate status and the fare purchased allows for such benefits and upgrades. Air Canada reserves the right to apply additional fees for bookings made via Air Canada Reservations. Unused passes will automatically be cancelled on the date the credit card is closed, regardless of reason for closure, or if the credit card account is changed to a different product. Terms and conditions of the air transportation services are subject to the General Conditions of Carriage & Tariffs and any other terms and conditions relating to air transportation services in effect at the time of booking, as determined by Air Canada in its sole discretion and as may be changed from time to time.
This one-time bonus Buddy Pass is only valid for eligible cardholders. You will not be eligible for the bonus Buddy Pass if you have previously opened an Aeroplan Program credit card of the same type, regardless of the credit card issuer and have received the Welcome Bonus offer in the last 12 months. This offer may be changed, cancelled or extended at any time and cannot be combined with any other offers.

A Brief History of U.S. Bank

While not quite as prominent as financial superpowers like JPMorgan Chase & Co. or Bank of America, U.S. Bank carries a great deal of weight. As of December 31, 2018, it’s the nation’s fifth largest bank, with $467 billion in assets, and it boasts a workforce of 74,000 employees.

U.S. Bank’s lineage can be traced back to the 19th century, long before today’s advanced financial technology had even begun to take shape.

Building Blocks of U.S. Bank

U.S. Bank’s story began in 1863, while the nation was wrought with the vicious conflict of the American Civil War, with the opening of First National Bank of Cincinnati. Interestingly, though it was just one of many forerunners, U.S. Bank still operates under this bank’s charter, which just happens to be the second-oldest in the country.

Another key predecessor, First National Bank of Minneapolis, formed the next year. Years down the line, both of these regional staples were scooped up by other banks that would eventually become U.S. Bank.

Throughout the years that followed, regional banks sprung up and became more prominent all across the country, livening up the nation’s financial scene and paving the way for the larger corporations that now dominate the industry today.

Mergers, Mergers, and More Mergers

A number of mergers that were key in the development of U.S. Bank — and U.S. Bancorp, its holding company — began to take place as the 19th century gave way to the hustle and bustle of the early 1900s.

The United States National Bank of Portland was founded in 1891, and after a solid decade of success, merged with Ainsworth National Bank of Portland, another Oregon-based mainstay. The institution kept the United States National name, though it was soon changed to United States National Bank of Oregon.

Constructed in 1917, Portland’s United States National Bank building still stands today, though it’s since been expanded. Image credit: Portland History

Fast-forward a few decades to 1925, and United States National encountered another major merger. This time, however, the prize was Oregon’s oldest bank, Ladd and Tilton.

The Depression Sessions

Things began picking up speed for U.S. Bank’s predecessors in 1929, with the formation of First Bank Stock Corporation. Descending from the aforementioned First National Bank of Minneapolis, First Bank Stock Corporation was a holding company formed from a massive collection of regional banks in order to create a network of mutual support during the trying period that would eventually become known as The Great Depression.

Throughout the next several decades, the corporation continued acquiring additional banks (and acquiring, and acquiring…), gaining momentum and size, though the banks that fell under the First Bank umbrella generally operated on an individual level.

Along the way, in 1968, the corporation changed its name to First Bank System, Inc., the last name it’d use prior to the merger that changed it all.

The New Millenium

By the 1990s, First Bank System, Inc. was a formidable force in the nation’s financial industry, and it entered a new chapter in 1997, when it acquired Portland-based U.S. Bancorp.

Sizable enough in its own right, U.S. Bancorp had grown from a holding company for the United States National Bank of Oregon into yet another major financial player through a host of acquisitions. And despite U.S. Bancorp’s smaller size, the resulting corporation adopted the U.S. Bancorp and U.S. Bank names across the board.

Since then, U.S. Bank has moved its headquarters to Minnesota and continues to evolve, asserting its position as one of America’s most important and longest-lived financial institutions and reminding larger competitors that it’s not likely to fade away anytime soon.

Giving Back

U.S. Bank’s portfolio of financial products and services may grow and change over time, but that’s not the only area where the bank’s making strides. U.S. Bancorp also works to enrich the communities that have helped it attain such great heights through charitable contributions and hands-on community involvement.

Its Work, Home, and Play grants, for example, allow the organization to provide individuals with a chance at career growth, access to sustainable housing, and opportunities to learn through arts and play.

Plus, the bank places heavy emphasis on the importance of financial education, delivering seminars and workshops that have already impacted more than 150,000 individuals across the country.

U.S. Bank also demonstrates a keen eye for corporate responsibility regarding both the environment and diversity and inclusion. These include investments in solar energy and environmental education, and a commitment to increasing diversity among new hires and bank partners.

How to transfer a balance to a U.S. Bank credit card

Are high interest rates causing the debt on your credit cards to soar? It might be time for a balance transfer to a credit card that offers an introductory 0% interest rate.

This move will give you time to pay down your credit card debt without worrying about it growing each month because of high interest rates.

If you’re considering transferring a balance to a U.S. Bank credit card, here’s everything you need to know, including rates, promotional periods, fees and odds of approval.

How to do a balance transfer With U.S. Bank

Starting a balance transfer with U.S. Bank is a simple process.

If you already have a U.S. Bank credit card:

  • Log into your account and click on the “My Accounts” tab at the top of the screen.
  • Click “Request a Balance Transfer” in the “Take Action” drop-down menu on the left of the screen.
  • Select your offer from the choices available to you.
  • Provide information about the credit card from which you are transferring a balance. This should include card issuer, card number and the amount you want to transfer.
  • Click “Submit” to initiate the balance transfer.

If you are applying for a new U.S. Bank card:

  • Start an online credit card application for your new U.S. Bank credit card. You will be asked if you’d like to transfer a balance from one of your other credit cards. Select this option.
  • Provide the account number and issuer of your existing card. Then list how much of that card’s debt you’d like to transfer to your new U.S. Bank credit card.

What you should know about a U.S. Bank balance transfer before applying

  • You need to act fast. You’ll need to request your balance transfer within 60 days of opening your new U.S. Bank account. If you miss this deadline, that no-interest offer will disappear.
  • You can’t transfer a balance from one U.S. Bank card to another card issued by U.S. Bank.
  • The balance you transfer to a U.S. Bank card will not earn rewards points or cash-back bonuses. Those perks are reserved only for new credit card purchases.
  • Approval isn’t guaranteed. U.S. Bank will look at your credit and finances during the application process. The bank could reject your request if your credit is too weak.

How to improve the chances of your balance transfer being approved

U.S. Bank will look at your credit score and debt-to-income ratio when determining whether to approve you for a balance transfer. If your credit score is low and your debts too high, you might struggle to earn this approval.

That’s why you’ll need to have your spending habits under control before you apply for a balance transfer. People who overspend tend to run up their credit card debt.

Having too much credit card debt also hurts your credit score. Finally, people are more likely to miss payments or make late payments if they are struggling with high credit card debt.

Matthew Zimmelman, an attorney in New York City who focuses on bankruptcy and other debt issues, said that he often sees clients who turn to balance transfers when their credit card debt is too high. The problem? These clients haven’t come up with a plan to pay off their debt before the 0% offer ends.

“Spending is a key part of the problem,” Zimmelman said. “The inability to control spending is often the reason why consumers have so much debt. People often use credit cards as a crutch. If you can’t control spending and stick to a tight budget, the debt will continue to mount.”

Transferring your debt will provide you with temporary relief from high interest rates. But it won’t solve your underlying debt problems.

Freddie Huynh, vice president with Freedom Financial Network in San Mateo, California, said that too many people transfer their debt but don’t come up with a plan to reduce their overspending.

Then, even if they pay off their credit card debt before the 0% balance transfer offer ends, they run up more credit card debt in the future.

Transferring your debt will provide you with temporary relief from high interest rates. But it won’t solve your underlying debt problems.

“They are not confronting the real issue,” Huynh said. “Look at the reason behind the situation. If it’s living outside your means, balance transfers can give a false sense of progress on paying off debt. If you cannot control your spending, you might run up bills on both the old and the new card.”

Another mistake people make is not paying off the debt they’ve transferred before the 0% offer ends, said Cara Ivy,  personal finance coach and owner of Harper Woods, Michigan-based The Ivy League. When the 0% offer ends, these people are left with their new card’s regular APR, which can be 20% or higher.

Others can’t resist the temptation and make new charges on the 0% card before paying off the debt they’ve transferred, Ivy said.

“Stop thinking of credit cards as a source of income,” Ivy said. “Most times we find ourselves with maxed-out credit cards, it’s because we treat our cards like cash instead of debt. It’s easy to swipe today, but that expense could cost you for months, sometimes years.”
