The standard offer on the consumer Southwest cards typically sits at 40,000 points. So, the increased offer can net new cardholders an additional 60,000 Rapid Rewards points. If you value Rapid Rewards points at ~1.4¢ per point, you'll get around $1,400 in value from the welcome bonus on any one of these Southwest credit cards.

Why Southwest Points Are Especially Useful for 2022

Barring a major setback, 2022 should be a record year for travel—especially on domestic and short-haul, international trips to destinations like Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. That's great news for everyone who has delayed or canceled non-essential travel during the past 2 years. But all that pent-up demand is likely to make 2022 one of the worst years ever for using traditional frequent-flyer miles on these types of flights.

Southwest has a great route network for the regions many are keen to visit. But, more importantly, Rapid Rewards members don't have to deal with the same headaches as those with American, Delta, and United miles.

That's because Southwest has no blackout dates. If you can buy a Southwest flight with money, you can always redeem Rapid Rewards points. Other frequent-flyer programs have started moving in the same direction as Southwest (at least for domestic flights). But you'll still run into situations where you can't use other types of airline miles when demand is high—or the mileage price is so high that you won't want to!

Plus, Southwest makes it easy and free to cancel or change an award ticket—anytime up to 10 minutes before departure. So, you'll never have to worry about losing your points if you have to make a last-minute change.

How to Earn a Companion Pass for Nearly Two Full Years

For those who aren't familiar, the Southwest Companion Pass allows you to take a companion with you on Southwest flights for only the cost of taxes and fees (starting at $5.60 for travel within the U.S.). In short, the Southwest Companion Pass gets you two flights for the price of one for as long as your pass is valid.

To earn this valuable benefit, you usually need to earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year. And the good news is that any points earned from a new cardmember bonus or spending on a Southwest credit card count towards that total.

Now, here's the most important thing to know: The Companion Pass is valid for the rest of the year in which you qualify—plus the entire year after. So, any credit-card bonus points you earn on or after January 1, 2022 will count toward earning the perk for the remainder of 2022 and all of 2023.

If you maximize the current offers of up to 100,000 points, you'll be almost 90% of the way to Companion Pass without taking a single Southwest flight.

  • Earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months of card membership
  • Earn 50,000 additional points after spending $12,000 in the first 12 months of card membership.

Since each Southwest card earns at least one point per dollar spent, you'll have a minimum of 52,000 points after earning the first part of the bonus. Plus, you'll earn an additional 60,000 points completing the second part of the bonus. That's 112,000 points out of the 125,000 you need!

The key to executing this strategy is to ensure you don't reach the first $2,000 in spending until after New Year's Day. Once you've cleared that hurdle, just keep using your new card until you trigger the second part of your bonus.

Which Southwest Card Provides the Most Value?

Without a doubt, the card with the highest long-term value is the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card. That's because two of its perks easily cover the $149 annual fee if you fly with Southwest a few times each year—and that shouldn't be too hard once you earn 100,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points!

Benefits include:

  • $75 annual Southwest travel credit
  • 7,500-anniversary points each year
  • Four upgraded boardings per year
  • 25% back on in-flight purchases

The Rapid Rewards program bases the number of points you need for a flight on the cash price of airfare. The value per point can fluctuate, but you can expect to save 1.3-1.5¢ off Southwest flights when you use points. For example, here's the same flight from Austin to New York, priced in cash and points. After factoring in the $5.60 security fee on the award flight, you save $137+ by using 9,248 points. That's 1.48 cents per point.

southwest-AUS-LGA-points-cash

Each year when you renew your Southwest Priority Card account, you'll receive 7,500 bonus points. Those points alone are worth between $98 and $113.

The second key benefit is the $75 annual Southwest travel credit. You'll get this credit on your statement after using your card to pay for a Southwest flight. With those two perks combined, you're getting at least $173 in value. That's significantly more than the $149 annual fee.

And that's before factoring in the upgraded boardings or 25% discount on in-flight purchases. You can catch our in-depth review of the Southwest Priority Card here.

That said, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card is a great alternative (with the same huge bonus) if you're looking for a card with a modest annual fee.

Southwest Card Application Restrictions

Like all Chase rewards cards, the Southwest credit cards are subject to Chase's 5/24 policy. In short, you won't be approved for a new Chase card if you've opened five or more personal credit cards in seacoast bank business login past two years.

In addition to Chase's 5/24 policy, you won't qualify for a new (personal) card if you currently hold a Southwest personal card or you've received a signup bonus on one in the previous 24 months.

Here are the application restrictions for personal Southwest credit cards:

The product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.

Final Thoughts

If your travel plans for 2022 and beyond include destinations in Southwest's extensive route network, Rapid Rewards points are a great choice. With no blackout dates, you'll avoid the stress of trying to find flights you can book with points when everyone else is chasing a limited number of award seats on the other U.S. airlines.

If your plans change, you can cancel or modify award flights without paying a fee. And you'll never have to worry about your points expiring—even if it takes longer than expected to get that trip back on the calendar. You'll also save a bundle thanks to Southwest's industry-leading policy of two free checked bags for every passenger.

Best of all, if you can turn this bonus into a Companion Pass in 2022, you'll be booking two flights for the price of one through the end of 2023!

The Rapid Rewards Shopping portal is an online gateway that offers higher points earnings on purchases from Southwest partner retailers. Depending on the merchant, you can easily earn double, triple or even 10 times the points you’d earn using your credit card alone, in just a few quick steps:

  • Go to the Rapid Rewards Shopping portal and enter your Southwest login credentials.
  • Find the retailer you want to shop with to see if the portal offers extra points on purchases from that store.
  • Shop as usual! You should be able to use any form of payment, including gift cards.

5. Use the Rapid Rewards Dining program

Similar to its shopping portal, Southwest offers bonus points for dining with participating restaurants, bars and clubs through its Rapid Rewards Dining program. All you have to do is register on the program’s website and link any credit card you might want to use for dining out (or ordering in, as is more likely these days). If you pay for dinner using a card that offers 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on food, you’ll be double-stacking your rewards: You’ll earn points from the card itself and points from the dining portal.

6. Book Southwest flights

This might seem like a no-brainer, but you’ll earn several points per dollar on every Southwest flight as a Rapid Rewards member. Remember, you also earn 2 points per dollar on Southwest purchases when you pay with a Southwest credit card, though it may make more sense to pay with a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve (which earns 3 points per dollar on general travel and 5 points per dollar on air travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards after earning the $300 annual travel credit), and then transfer the earned points to your Rapid Rewards account.

Note that flights booked with Rapid Rewards points do not earn any additional rewards – unfortunately, you can’t double-dip that way.

7. Book higher-class airfare

While Southwest’s Wanna Get Away tickets will always offer the lowest price, the fare class also earns the lowest rate on Rapid Rewards points, with just six points per dollar spent. However, Southwest has two additional fare classes: Anytime and Business Select. In addition to some added perks, Anytime fares earn 10 points per dollar spent, and Business Select earns 12 points.

Rapid Rewards points earned
Wanna Get Away fares6 points per dollar
Anytime fares10 points per dollar
Business Select fares12 points per dollar

In some cases, it could make sense to buy the pricier ticket to earn some extra points quickly. If you manage to find a fare where the cost difference among the three classes is minimal, it might be a good value to spend the few extra dollars to buy that higher-fare ticket and earn up to twice as many points. (And if you buy a Business Select ticket, it pay my chase southwest credit card with priority boarding and a free premium drink to boot.)

8. Gain elite status with Southwest

Southwest is pretty egalitarian in that elite status with the airline doesn’t mean quite what it does with most other carriers. That said, A-list and A-list Preferred members still get some sweet perks, like an accelerated earnings bonus on Rapid Rewards points for each revenue flight booked: A-list members earn a 25% bonus, while A-list Preferred members earn a generous 100% bonus.

9. Use Southwest’s rental-car partners

Southwest partners with eight different rental-car partners with a global presence:

  • Alamo
  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Dollar
  • Hertz
  • National
  • Payless
  • Thrifty

Make sure you get credit for your car rentals by booking through the Southwest portal. Earnings rates will vary depending on the partner, but all qualified rentals will earn you Rapid Rewards points that get you closer to your next bucket-list trip. Remember that these rentals also earn 2 points per dollar when you pay for them with a Southwest credit card.

Tip:

It’s a good idea to make a habit of checking the Rapid Rewards Promotions page to keep an eye out for the best rate from competing rental companies.

10. Buy a Southwest vacation package

If you want to take a vacation but don’t want to bother with the logistics, Southwest offers vacation packages with travel partners that can save you from having to plan out all the details yourself. (Earnings will vary.)

At the time of this post, Southwest offered an extra 600 Rapid Rewards points per room for every qualifying stay at select MGM Resorts in Las Vegas. You can also save $100 when you spend $750 or more on your next vacation. Again, bookings through Southwest earn 2 points per dollar with Southwest cards and 3 points per dollar with qualifying Ultimate Rewards cards (and a number of other premium travel credit cards, too).

11. Earn points on your electric bill

Who knew that responsible living could fast-track you to your next getaway? Residents of Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, listen up: Southwest partners with NRG Home, and eligible customers who switch over will earn an unlimited two points per dollar spent on the supply portion of their energy bill. And after two months as an active customer, you’ll also earn 10,000 enrollment bonus Rapid Rewards points.

Meanwhile, Texans who switch to Reliant on the Reliant Secure 24 plan will receive a fixed-rate price plan for 24 months and 15,000 enrollment bonus Rapid Rewards points after sign-up. You will also get another 500 points every month for the next two years, for a total of 27,000 Rapid Rewards points. That’s $432 worth of travel, which could be worth even more if you find a Wanna Get Away award fare at a great price.

12. Book hotel stays with Southwest partners

The following Southwest hotel partners offer Rapid Rewards points for qualified stays (earnings vary by hotel and the room you book):

You can also snag an extra point per dollar when you book through Southwest’s hotel portal – and even more if you stay at a Points Plus property. From time to time, Southwest offers points promotions with increased earnings potential, so it’s a good idea to make a habit of checking the Rapid Rewards Promotions page to keep an eye out for good hotel deals.

Tip: Some of the airline’s hotel partners will give you points for previous stays –

check the Southwest website to learn how to request a credit to your Rapid Rewards account.

13. Book hotel stays through Rocketmiles

Rocketmiles offers Rapid Rewards members mankato sams club of up to 10,000 Rapid Rewards points per night (or more) on stays booked directly through Rocketmiles. Depending on the hotel and the number of nights you book, a few Rocketmiles reservations could, well, rocket you toward a free ride on Southwest.

14. Complete e-Rewards surveys

One quick way to earn a few points to top off your Rapid Rewards account is by filling out market research surveys through e-Rewards. However, the process can be time-consuming in exchange for a relatively small number of points.

e-Rewards Currency can be redeemed for Rapid Rewards points in increments of:

  • $15 e-Rewards currency = 300 Rapid Rewards points
  • $25 e-Rewards currency = 600 Rapid Rewards points
  • $50 e-Rewards currency = 1,200 Rapid Rewards points
  • $100 e-Rewards currency = 2,400 Pay my chase southwest credit card Rewards points

Points take about four to six weeks from redemption to post to your Rapid Rewards account.

15. Fuel up with Marathon gas

Do you live near a Marathon gas station? If so, you might want to start filling your tank there. When you sign up for Marathon’s MakeItCount Rewards program and connect your Southwest Rapid Rewards account, you’ll earn one point per dollar spent on every gallon of gas purchased at participating Marathon locations. MakeItCount members also save 5 cents per gallon on every fill-up and earn bonus rewards on select in-store purchases.

16. Buy points through Southwest

If you need just a few more points to book that special trip or take advantage of a sweet sale deal on a Southwest flight, you could find yourself scrambling to make up the difference. We always recommend transferring points from partner accounts, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. In those moments, it might make sense to buy the rest of the points you need directly from Southwest, even though the exchange rate will be poor in comparison to most of the other options listed here.

You’re limited to purchasing Rapid Rewards points in increments of 1,000 during promotional periods and 500 during all other times, with a minimum purchase of 2,000 points. The daily maximum is a combined 60,000 points on personal and gift purchases.

17. Refer a friend to a Southwest credit card

Southwest credit cards are included under Chase’s refer-a-friend program, so get those referral links ready, because you can score a ton of Rapid Rewards points – 10,000 points per referral, up to 50,000 points total in a calendar year – by referring friends and family to a Southwest card.

The refer-a-friend bonus applies to all cards within the Southwest suite, including the business cards. Even better news: Southwest updated its refer-a-friend program in 2019, which means that current Southwest cardholders can earn bonuses on any Southwest card their referral applies (and gets approved) for.

By now, you’ve hopefully learned more than a dozen ideas to fast-track your way to your next vacation, just by tweaking some of the things you’re already doing every day. Remember, sale fares on Southwest sometimes start as low as 1,350 Rapid Rewards points for a short one-way flight, so by implementing some of these tactics, you’ll be able to trade in your hard work for a fantastic getaway in much less time than you think.

How to use Southwest Rapid Rewards

Once you’ve successfully racked up a healthy stash of Rapid Rewards points, it’s time for the fun part: deciding how to use ’em.

One of the joys of the Rapid Rewards program is that Southwest makes it simple to figure out which redemptions offer the best value. You can quickly calculate the value of your points by viewing a list of flights by price, then clicking the “points” option on Southwest’s select flight screen:

Screenshot of Southwest Airlines flight menu displaying Rapid Rewards point values.

However, to cut to the chase, we’ve summarized your options and the value for each one in the list below.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for airfare

If you want to get the biggest return on your Rapid Rewards points, your best bet is to redeem them for airfare on Southwest. The airline offers a great value on most of its flight awards.

Wanna Get Away fares

Wanna Get Away fares offer the best value for your points: around 1.6 cents each on average. The tickets aren’t quite as flexible as Anytime and Business Select fares – you won’t get a full refund if you cancel a ticket that you paid for in cash, but Southwest will redeposit rewards into your account if you paid with points, so this is a moot point for award tickets. However, you’ll want to book well in advance, since Wanna Get Away fares tend to get snatched up quickly.

Anytime fares

An Anytime fare is nearly the same as a Wanna Get Away fare, except the ticket is fully refundable – and the price is much higher. If you can’t find a Wanna Get Away fare for your desired date and destination, an Anytime fare is your next-best bet. You’ll garner about 1.1 cents per point on an Anytime ticket.

Business Select fares

Business Select fares give you a few more privileges on Southwest: You’ll be entitled to priority boarding, a priority security lane and free drinks. However, the price of these fares is high, and you get such a poor value on redemptions – around 0.9 cents per point – that we don’t think it’s worth it to spend your points for Business Select fares.

Southwest More Rewards options

The Southwest More Rewards site provides a few more options for Rapid Rewards members who aren’t satisfied with their flight choices on Southwest. Unfortunately, the value of most items on the More Rewards site is so poor, we advise against using your points this way.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for gift cards

You can find gift cards for a wide variety of restaurants and retailers on the More Rewards site, with amounts ranging from $25 to $100. You’ll get the best return on $50 to $100 increments, but the value of gift cards is poor across the board, averaging only 0.7 cents per point.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for merchandise

You can redeem Rapid Rewards points for a variety of merchandise, including clothing, electronics and home furnishings. As with most rewards programs, merchandise is one of the worst ways to redeem your points: You’ll only get 0.6 cents per point on average.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for car rentals

You can use Rapid Rewards points to rent cars at a selection of agencies, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National. Your Rapid Rewards points are worth only 0.7 cents per point on average when redeemed this way, though.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for international flights

While choices for international flights on Southwest are very limited, you can find options for international flights on 50-plus carriers through the More Rewards site. The flight search works much like any other travel portal: You can search by origin, destination and date and see a list of flights on various airlines sorted by price. Unfortunately, this option cuts the value of your Rapid Rewards points in half. When we compare the number of captain america the winter soldier box office needed for a fare to its cash price, the value averages out to 0.8 cents per point.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for hotels

Similar to international flights, you can use the More Rewards site to search for hotels. This is by far the worst option for redeeming your points: When comparing the redemption value for hotels in several cities, we found that the points were worth only sears customer service number in spanish cents on average.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for Southwest Experiences

You can also redeem Rapid Rewards points for various experiences, including tours, museum admission and outdoor activities. The points required vary quite a bit with each option – some experiences appear to be overpriced, but there are some good deals to be found here and there (and some unique ideas for excursions on your next trip), so the list is worth a look.

As mentioned, Southwest keeps your redemption choices simple. While you have a few different options for spending your Rapid Rewards points, you should probably stick to using them for flights – more specifically, Wanna Get Away fares. You can count on getting around 1.6 value on every point that you redeem this way, and sometimes more.

What you’ll get at the gas station: During at least one quarter per year, cardholders will earn five percent cash back at the pump.

Other perks: Other quarterly reward bonuses include five percent cash back at grocery stores, Amazon, and restaurants, which are everyday spend categories for many Americans.

U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card

This winner of a card is purpose-built for travelers and road trippers. The tradeoff is that U.S. Bank Altitude points do not have any airline or hotel program transfer partners, which means you can only redeem them for benefits like travel and gift cards at the rate of one penny per point. You can also opt for cash back, but consider how much you spend to see if it is worth it. The card has a $95 annual fee, but is waived for the first year.

What you’ll get at the gas station: You’ll earn four points per dollar (or four percent cash back) on travel and gas purchases all year long, not only during one quarter of the year like on some other cards. There is no limit on how much you can earn, either. That’s pretty generous.

Other perks: You’ll earn two percent back on eligible purchases at grocery stores (including delivery) and on dining or streaming services. There are also statement credits for streaming services like Netflix or expedited travel security programs like TSA PreCheck.

Learn more about the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature card.

Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

This card has a $95 annual fee (see rates and fees), but that is waived the first year. That small fee may seem like peanuts to drivers with long commutes, carpooling parents, and road trippers looking to accrue cash back year-round at the pump. If you spend heavily on transit, fuel, and groceries, this card also provides solid returns.

What you’ll get at the gas station: Unlike other cards that only award bonuses a few months a year, this AmEx card delivers three percent cash back on fuel purchases all year long. Even if you’re not the one driving, you’ll earn three percent cash back when using this card to pay for transit including rideshare services, taxis, buses, trains, and even tolls.

Other perks: It’s not just drivers that will see meaningful return. Cardholders will also earn six percent cash back at grocery stores and on certain U.S. streaming subscriptions. Everything else earns one percent cash back.

Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card

Why not choose which categories you want for bonus point earning? That’s what the no-fee Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card lets you do. That flexibility means that you can customize your cash back earning to your own spending patterns. Still, the quarterly spending caps can stifle the returns if you spend more than $2,500 in that category every three months. Big spenders would be better off with another card.

If you're a Preferred Rewards member at Bank of America, though, you can multiply your earnings, with top-tier Platinum Honors members getting up to a 75 percent cash-back bonus.

What you’ll get at the gas station: Each quarter, you can select a category to earn three percent cash back. These include gas stations, but also dining, online shopping, and travel spending, which means you can coordinate your gas station–specific earnings and your road trip planning. You can even change your earning category once per month, but can only earn rewards on up to $2,500 in spending per quarter.

Other perks: Expect two percent cash back year-round on grocery and wholesale club purchases and one percent back on everything else, but only up to the $2,500 quarterly limit.

JGonz15 reports having a 644 credit score at approval for their Southwest credit card with an initial $4,000 credit limit.

If you want the flagship Southwest Priority Credit Card, it might be best to try with a credit score above 700.  Redbird06 with a 742 credit score got instant approval for the Priority Card with an initial $10,800 credit limit. Their annual income is $75,000 which helps get a higher credit limit.

Visa Signature or Visa Platinum

Depending on your creditworthiness, you will either get a Visa Signature or a Visa Platinum version of your desired Southwest credit card. Either version has the same purchase rewards and Southwest travel benefits. However, your initial credit limit and the Visa-provided benefits will differ.

For example, the Visa Signature has a minimum starting credit limit of $5,000, Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection discounts, and secondary car rental insurance.

The Visa Platinum has a minimum initial credit limit of $2,000. You get secondary car rental insurance but may not get as many travel discounts and benefits.

Other Southwest Airlines Credit Card Factors

Though it is good that you are aware of the credit score needed for Southwest Credit Cards, know that your credit score alone won’t influence Chase to approve or deny your application. Pay attention to these other factors as well.

Annual Income

A high annual income can boost your approval odds or a potentially higher initial credit limit. The nationwide median household income in 2018 is $61,937 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Making above $60k, means you have above-average income in most states.

A higher income also makes it easier to have a lower debt-to-income ratio. A low ratio can factor into a high credit score. You’re more likely to pay your Southwest credit card balance in full each month and not default on your account.

Too Many New Credit Cards

For Chase credit cards, the most important factor besides your credit score can be the Chase 5/24 rule. This policy limits how many new Chase credit cards you can get in a 24-month period.

Chase is highly likely to decline your Southwest Airlines credit card application when at least 5 new credit cards account appear on your credit report in a 24-month period. You can either be the primary or authorized user for these accounts.

Small business credit cards from Capital One, Discover, and TD Bank may hurt you. These three banks report your business credit card activity to the personal credit report.

If you’re currently “5/24” or higher, you should wait to avoid an unnecessary rejection and hard credit pull. Once you have 4 or fewer credit card accounts younger than 24 months, you can try.

How Many Current Southwest Airlines Credit Cards Do You Have?

The Southwest credit card terms and conditions don’t explicitly say you can’t have at least 2 Southwest credit cards. A Southwest Airlines card combo makes sense if you can have one personal and one small business card. But if you don’t earn any self-employment income, you should only own one personal card at a time.

The primary reason why is qualifying for the signup bonus. Current application guidelines only let new cardmembers earn a signup bonus. You don’t qualify if you currently own a personal Southwest credit card and have earned a bonus in the last 24 months.

That means you will need to close your existing personal card if you want to earn another bonus from any of the personal Southwest credit cards.

If you don’t want to close your existing account, you must either request an upgrade or downgrade to a different personal card product. Although, you won’t qualify for the current signup bonus offer.

These bonus offer restrictions don’t apply if you only have a small business or corporate card presently and want to earn a personal card signup bonus. Another “loophole” is that you can own the bonus for the other business Southwest Airlines credit card if you haven’t earned that specific card’s bonus in at least 24 months.

Qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass®

Besides the application guidelines, you might time your purchase to qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass®. This is one of the best companion travel deals. With the pass, you only need to pay the usual fees and taxes for your companion’s seat. On most flights, that’s $5.60 each way. You can buy your ticket with cash or points.

The Southwest Companion Pass® is valid for up to 2 years. It’s good for the rest of the year you earn it and all of next year. You must earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards or fly 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year to earn the pass. The Rapid Rewards you earn from the signup bonus and card purchase count toward the 125,000-point requirement.

You might try for a Southwest credit card in the spring instead of the fall. This way, you can get the Southwest Companion Pass® a few months earlier.

Summary

Trying for a Southwest Airlines credit card with a credit score of at least 670 means you’re likely to get an instant approval decision. However, you may need to time your application if you have too many new credit card accounts or want to earn the best Southwest credit card offers.

FAQs

What credit score is needed for airline credit cards?

Most airline credit cards only need a minimum credit score of 650 or higher to get an instant approval decision. Premium cards that offer perks like complimentary airport lounge access may need a score of at least 740 for the best approval odds.

You should have high approval odds for a Southwest Airlines credit card with a score of at least 670. You will need to make sure you haven’t added at least 5 new cards to your wallet to avoid the Chase 5/24 rule.

What is the minimum credit score for a Southwest Airlines credit card?

There isn’t a published minimum credit score for a Southwest credit card. It’s possible that you can get approval with a score in the low to mid-600s. Trying with a score of 670 or above, means you are most likely to get instant approval.

Like any credit card application, other factors can affect your approval decision. Even if you have an acceptable score, factors like too many recent applications or too many cards with the same bank can disqualify you.

What is the best Southwest credit card?

There are three personal and two small business versions of the Southwest Airlines credit card.

  • 2x points on internet, cable, phone services, and select streaming purchases

All points earned count towards the Companion Pass®.

New card members can earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.

In short, you won't be approved for a new Chase card if you've opened five or more personal credit cards in the past two years.

Whether Southwest is your airline of choice or you’ve never hitched a ride with the low-cost carrier, here’s everything you need to know about its rewards program, from all the ways you can earn points to the best (and worst) ways to redeem them.

What is Southwest Rapid Rewards?

The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards loyalty program is one of the easiest frequent-flyer programs to navigate. It lets you earn points on flights, purchases with its hotel and car-rental partners, everyday spending and more, which you can redeem for a variety of awards, including Southwest airfare (which is by far your best redemption option, but more on that later).

Although your flight options with the Rapid Rewards program are limited mainly to domestic travel (Southwest serves only 10 countries outside of the U.S.), it’s a great option for economy flyers, as well as families and other large groups toting a lot of extra luggage. Not only is it simple to find and book flights with your points, but you don’t have to worry about baggage fees or any other hidden charges. Plus, Southwest booking policies are very flexible, allowing you to change and even cancel your ticket at the very last minute for free – and with a full refund of your points.

How to earn Southwest Rapid Rewards

One of the best ways to accumulate points and miles for free Southwest travel is with a Rapid Rewards credit card. All of them come with generous sign-up offers and anniversary bonuses that can quickly put you on the path toward qualifying for the Companion Pass – which lets you bring one lucky friend or family member on every Southwest flight you take for up to two years, depending on the time of year you earn it. (We said it was coveted, didn’t we?)

That said, there are lots of other ways to stack and maximize your Southwest Rapid Rewards earnings, thanks to the airline’s numerous partnerships. Below are 17 suggestions – yep, count ’em! – to get you started. Check out our list to see which options best fit your lifestyle. You may be surprised to find you don’t have to book a plane ticket or sign up for a Southwest credit card to rack up tons of points that can get you to your next destination in no time.

1. Score a large sign-up bonus with a Southwest credit card

You don’t need a Southwest credit card to earn Rapid Rewards points. However, one of the fastest ways to do just that is to qualify for a Southwest card sign-up bonus, which you do by spending a certain amount of money within a designated time period:

Southwest credit card sign-up bonuses

CardSign-up bonusEstimated value
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit CardUp to 100,000 points (earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 on purchases in first 3 months and 50,000 more points after spending a total of $12,000 on purchases in first 12 months)$1,600
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit CardUp to 100,000 points (earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 on purchases in first 3 months plus 50,000 more points after spending $12,000 total on purchases in first 12 months)$1,600
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit CardUp to 100,000 points (earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 on purchases in first 3 months and earn 50,000 more points after spending a total of $12,000 on purchases in first 12 months)$1,600
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card*60,000 bonus points if you spend $3,000 in first 3 months$960
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card*80,000 bonus points if you spend $5,000 in first 3 months$1,280

Since Rapid Rewards points are valued at about 1.6 cents apiece, we estimate these bonuses can be worth up to $1,600 when you spend them on travel.

Since Southwest Rapid Rewards cards are issued by Chase, you’ll need to keep Chase’s 5/24 rule in mind when applying. Chase is likely to deny your application if you’ve opened five credit cards with any bank – not just Chase – in the past 24 months.

  • $75 Southwest® travel credit every year

2. Earn points through everyday spending

You can accrue additional points through everyday spending on the Southwest credit cards. Every dollar you spend with Southwest Airlines or its partners earns you 2 to 4 points (depending on which card you have), plus 2X points on local transit and commuting (including rideshare) and 2X points on internet, cable, phone services and select streaming with the personal cards.

3. Transfer points from non-Southwest credit cards

You might be surprised to find there are other credit cards that allow you to earn rewards that can be converted to Rapid Rewards points.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to dozens of travel, entertainment and dining partners. One of those partners is Southwest Airlines, which allows instantaneous point transfers in increments of 1,000 points at a 1:1 ratio. Each of the following cards comes with a generous sign-up bonus that can amount to hundreds of dollars in Southwest travel:

Sign-up bonusEstimated value
Chase Freedom Flex℠$200 or 20,000 points if you spend $500 in first 3 months$320
Chase Freedom Unlimited$200 or 20,000 points if you spend $500 in first 3 months$320
Chase Sapphire Preferred Card60,000 points if you spend $4,000 in first 3 months$960
Chase Sapphire Reserve card50,000 points if you spend $4,000 in first 3 months$800
Ink Business Preferred Credit Card100,000 points if you spend $15,000 in first 3 months$1,600
Ink Business Cash Credit Card75,000 points if you spend $7,500 in first 3 months$1,200
Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card75,000 points if you spend $7,500 in first 3 months$1,200
*These cards earn cash back, but it’s awarded as Ultimate Rewards points, where 1 point equals 1 cent. You have to own a premium Chase card, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve card, to transfer Ultimate Rewards points to Rapid Rewards.

Note that while Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be used for award bookings on Southwest, they’re not tier-qualifying points and won’t count toward A-list or A-list Preferred status with the airline. The points won’t help you earn the Southwest Companion Pass, either, although they can be used to book flights for whoever’s lucky enough to be your Companion Pass holder.

4. Shop through the Rapid Rewards Shopping portal

If you aren’t already using a shopping portal to maximize earnings while you shop online, you’re missing out. Fortunately, it’s never too late to begin. In case you aren’t familiar with shopping portals, they provide one of the easiest and most lucrative ways to boost your earnings on purchases you’d make anyway – anything from home goods and apparel to jewelry and sporting equipment.

(And if you buy a Business Select ticket, it comes with priority boarding and a free premium drink to boot.)

Rocketmiles offers Rapid Rewards members bonuses of up to 10,000 Rapid Rewards points per night (or more) on stays booked directly through Rocketmiles.

  • $100 e-Rewards currency = 2,400 Rapid Rewards points

Best ways to redeem Southwest Rapid Rewards points

When we compare the number of points needed for a fare to its cash price, the value averages out to 0.8 cents per point.

Redeeming Rapid Rewards points for hotels

Similar to international flights, you can use the More Rewards site to search for hotels. This is by far the worst option for redeeming your points: When comparing the redemption value for hotels in several cities, we found that the points were worth only 0.2 cents on average.
