Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. A statistic (singular) or sample statistic is a single measure of some attribute of a sample (e. A statistic is distinct from a statistical parameter, which is not computable, because often the population is too large to examine and measure all its items. However, a statistic, when used to estimate a population parameter, is called an estimator. For instance, the sample mean is a statistic that estimates the population mean, which is a parameter.

In calculating the arithmetic mean of a sample, for example, the algorithm works by summing all the data values observed in the sample and then dividing this sum by the number of data items. A statistic is an observable random variable, which differentiates it both from a parameter that is a generally unobservable quantity describing a property of a statistical population, and from an unobservable random variable, such as the difference between an observed measurement and a population average.

Statisticians often contemplate a parameterized family of probability distributions, any member of which could be the distribution of some measurable aspect of each member of a population, from which a sample is drawn randomly.

For example, the parameter may be the average height of 25-year-old men in North America. The average of the heights of all members of the population is not a statistic unless that has somehow also been ascertained (such as by measuring every member of the population). The average height that would be calculated using all of the individual heights of all 25-year-old North American men is a parameter, and not a statistic.

Important potential properties of statistics include completeness, consistency, sufficiency, unbiasedness, minimum mean square error, low variance, robustness, and computational convenience. Information of a statistic on model parameters can be defined in several ways. The most common is the Fisher information, which is defined on the statistic model induced by the statistic. Kullback information measure can also be used.

Mathematical statistics is the application of mathematics to statistics, which was originally conceived as the science of the state the collection and analysis of facts about a country: its economy, land, military, population, and so on.

Mathematical techniques which are used for this include mathematical analysis, linear algebra, stochastic analysis, differential equations, and measure-theoretic probability theory. The initial analysis of the data from properly randomized studies often follows the study protocol. The data from a randomized study can be analyzed to consider secondary hypotheses or to suggest new ideas. A secondary analysis of the data from a planned study uses tools from data analysis. While the tools of data analysis work best on data from randomized studies, they are also applied to other kinds of data --- for example, from natural experiments and observational studies, in which case the inference is dependent on the model chosen by the statistician, and so subjective. The Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan is widely regarded as one of the top programs of its kind.

Probably the most often used descriptive statistic is the mean. We're so glad we decided to go with the 4x4. There was a large amount of excursion and activity choices given to us, which were easily added onto our trip by Nordic Visitor. Every part of the trip that was planned by Nordic Visitor was flawless. Nordic Visitor took care of ALL of the details for us. Alexandra did all the rest.

Nordic Visitor provides a car, maps, cell phone, and detailed itinerary for the drive-around vacations. We had detailed maps to get where we needed to go, AND details about other places in case we wished to digress from our route to see more of this amazing country.

We tacked on a few days at the end in Reykjavik, and had the chance to soak in the Blue Lagoon for a day, as well as see "How To Become Icelandic In 60 Minutes" at The HARPA (gorgeous national performing space on the harbor in Reykjavik). All in all, a marvelous 12 days. Thanks, Nordic Visitor, and Alexandra. Norway Grand Tour was excellent. The hotels booked were wonderful and the service was great. The whole experience with Nordic exceeded expectations.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Nordic visitor made everything stress-free. It was great to be able to pick up our rental car and check into accommodations, simply by handing them our reservation paper.

All accommodations were very clean, comfortable, great breakfasts and most had a beautiful Norway view. My friend and I just finished the Ring Road bus tour and were completely delighted with all aspects of the trip. We loved Iceland and feel like Nordic Visitor showed us the very best of the country in a way that maximized relaxation and minimized stress.

I definitely would choose this company for my next Scandinavian adventure. My husband and I thought the tour and the service provided by Nordic Visitor to be excellent. It was very convenient to book our trip with you as we didn't have to worry about coordinating all the accommodations, car rentals, shuttles, and tours on our own. Additionally, everyone from Nordic Visitor who helped us were so friendly, professional, and helpful.

We will definitely look to using your services again for our future Nordic vacations. I saved myself days and days of research by letting Gudrun take care of everything. Using Nordic Visitor allowed me direct access to a local agent (Gudrun) who knows how to put my trip together. We were delighted to be able to meet Alexandra, our Consultant, at the end of our trip. Despite some challenges provided by the weather we thoroughly enjoyed our circle drive through the extraordinary landscape and geo thermal environment.

We have great admiration for the resilience of the people who live and work in the small, remote farming and fishing villages around the country. We have no hesitation in recommending your company to our friends and others who were interested in our travels. Thankyou for ensuring our visit was safe and well organised. This was a special holiday we had been planning for over a year to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary and thanks to your careful planning for us it was a holiday that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

I booked the 'Exotic Hideaways' package last winter for my wife and I for our honeymoon in May. We have both always wanted to visit Iceland and having just returned from our trip, I can say unequivocally it was everything we were expecting and more.

Surah al baqarah word by word translation

From our driver who picked us up at the airport and went out of his way to make us feel welcome, to our 'at your own pace' itinerary and all the accommodations arranged for us along the way (which were virtually flawless.

1. Justification

The focus of the intervention is on people without cognitive impairment and people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

For the design of the session, the NeuronUP platform has been used, from which all the activities have been chosen, taking into account those that are most appropriate for patients in order to achieve the objectives set.

The cognitive function that we want to stimulate with this intervention is language. In addition, by carrying out each and every one of the activities, immediate memory and sustained attention will also be stimulated.

2. Objectives of the language session for people with mild cognitive impairment

2.1. General objective

The general objective of the cognitive session is to stimulate the language and maximize the preserved linguistic abilities of the users.

2.1. Specific Objectives

A series of specific objectives have been established for each of the activities to be carried out. In the following section “Programmed activities” the activities are explained and the specific objectives of each of them are explained.

Programmed Actividades

The NeuronUP activities selected to perform the language session for people with mild cognitive impairment will be explained below.

1.Matching nouns to images

Duration

10 minutes.

Material

Large room, tables and chairs, computer, projector, NeuronUP program, white paper, pens.

Description

  1. In order to carry out this activity, the users must position themselves together and sit facing the screen on which the projector image is displayed. Pens and paer will be provided.
  2. The professional will open NeuronUP on the computer and select the activity “Matching Nouns to Images”.
  3. The level will be selected with the images of the theme that best suits the group; in our case the advanced level cards have been chosen, in which everyday objects appear, in order to favor reminiscence.
  4. After having prepared the material, we will proceed to explain the activity to be carried out; in which only the images of NeuronUP will appear and the professional will read the words out loud.
  5. Each image will be assigned a number and the patients must write the number of the image they believe to be correct when the therapist says the word.
  6. Every six images will be corrected out loud allowing all patients in the group to participate.

Objectives

  • Exercise reading-writing comprehension.
  • Encourage verbal fluency.
  • Exercise oral comprehension.
  • Encourage the recognition of objects.
  • Exercise vocabulary level.
  • Maintain memory and semantics through reminiscence through everyday objects.
  • Preserve immediate memory.
  • Encourage spatial orientation.

2. Task Sequencing (text)

Duration

10 minutes.

Material

Large room, tables and chairs, computer, projector, NeuronUP program, white paper, pens.

Description

  1. In order to carry out this activity, users must be seated on the chairs next to the tables, with blank sheets of paper and a pen each (material provided by the occupational therapist).
  2. The professional will open NeuronUP on the computer, and select the activity “Task Sequencing”.
  3. Once the activity has been opened, the desired configuration will be selected, in this case it will be free mode and medium-advanced levels.
  4. After carrying out these steps, the explanation of the activity will continue, since, although the program already gives a brief indication, the therapist, in order to avoid possible confusion, will reinforce the clarification.
  5. Next, the professional will project the sheets that he wants the patients to complete, in such a way that these on an individual level, they will have to put to paper, according to them,  the order of the different steps of the corresponding task.
  6. Bearing in mind that there are sheets that contain many steps, to avoid the patients from becoming bored and tired, it should be made clear that each step will be accompanied by a letter, starting with A. In this way, instead of having to write all the steps, it is enough to place the correct letter on their piece of paper (corresponding to a step of the activity) and next to it, the order number that they believe corresponds to that letter.
  7. Once all the users have finished putting the activity in order, a volunteer will be asked to read it aloud. In this way, the rest of the users will see if the answer coincides or not with what they have written, and if they observe that there are mistakes made, they will correct each other favoring interaction.

Objectives

    • Improve planning.
    • Favor reasoning.
    • Stimulate the mechanics of reading and writing.
    • Exercise the fine motor skills of the hand.
    • Optimize recognition and numerical comprehension.

3. Telling the time (numbers)

Duration

10 minutes.

Material

Large room, tables and chairs, computer, projector, NeuronUP, tokens with empty clock dials, pens.

Description

  1. In order to carry out this activity, patients must be seated on the chairs next to the tables, facing the projector screen. Each user will be given a card with empty clock pictures and a pen. The material will be provided by the occupational therapist.
  2. The professional will open the NeuronUP program on the computer, and select the activity “Telling the time”.
  3. The difficulty of the activity will progressively increase.
  4. There will be no maximum time or notices of inactivity, since it will be the therapists who manages the time according to the needs of each patient.
  5. After explaining the activity to the patients, the activity will begin. On the projection a numerical hour will appear, the users will have to try to represent that hour on one of the blank clocks that they will have in their sheet, drawing the hands of the clock and placing them suitably.
  6. Once the therapists have finished the time, we will ask for a volunteer to go to the screen to try to properly place the hands of the clock. It will be corrected in groups and, if any patient is having any difficulty, we will try to help and explain it.
  7. Once each exercise has been corrected, we will move on to the next one.

Objectives

  • Facilitate recognition and numerical comprehension.
  • Facilitate reading-writing comprehension.
  • Strengthen the spatial relationship.

4. Making Words

Duration

15 minutes.

Material

Large room, tables and chairs, computer, projector, NeuronUP, white paper, pens.

Description

  1. To carry out this activity, users will be seated on chairs and tables, with a sheet of paper and a pen each.
The therapist will open NeuronUP on the computer, and select the “Making Words” activity.
  2. Once the activity is opened, a personalized phase will be configured, where the following configurations will be established. The general aspects will have a number of screens of 15 exceeded, so that if any of the words are too complicated, another can be generated, keeping the total of 15 words that we want to work with. On the other hand, no maximum time or inactivity warning will be established, since we will be the ones who control the activity and the time dedicated to it.
  3. The parameters will be of 6 bubbles and will count with letters, having a letter in each bubble.
  4. The mechanics of the activity will consist in projecting a screen with the bubbles that contain the letters, and the users will have to form a word with all the letters that appear in the bubbles. The first user to form the word will say it out loud, and the occupational therapist will select the letters in the correct order on the computer, so that all patients will see the word. patients will be asked to memorize all the right words.
  5. After having matched 5 words, users will be asked to form a phrase with one of the 5 words that have been matched previously, and to write it on the sheet that each of them has. If one of them remembers several words, he or she can combine them in the same sentence, or write several sentences with the different words  remembered.
  6. Once each of them has written a phrase, each patient will read the same phrase aloud.
  7. After this reading, you will go back to the activity, until you get another 5 words right. At that moment the patient will stop again to create the sentence(s). This procedure will be carried out one last time, so that at the end of the activity, a total of 15 words have been correctly formed and a minimum of 3 phrases per user have been written.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the capacity for repetition.
  • Favor the recognition and association of letters.
  • Promote the capacity of ideation.
  • Strengthen the spatial relationship and heminegligence.
  • Reinforce focused attention.
  • Stimulate short-term memory.

Conclusions from the language session for people with mild cognitive impairment

For this session we have chosen to work on language, as it has been considered one of the most important cognitive functions for the adequate development of daily life and the rest of the occupational areas of all people.

It is considered that in elderly people, the function of language is an area that progressively deteriorates, and it is for this reason that the main objective of the programmed cognitive session is to work on language. In addition, working with this function is especially important in people with mild cognitive impairment, as it is one of the first functions to deteriorate.

The choice of NeuronUP activities has been based on covering all the processes covered by language, including expression, comprehension, fluency, writing and reading, as well as working transversally with other cognitive functions.

Possible difficulties

The difficulties that can arise in the realization of the cognitive session are that the participation could be scarce on the part of some patients, as well as, on the other hand, that the users participate simultaneously, arising conflicts or confrontations. In addition, patients may become frustrated if they are not able to carry out the activities, or if they have numerous failures. Also, that the time programmed for each activity is insufficient. Another aspect to take into account is the technological one, as the Internet or even the computer can fail.

To try to avoid these problems, the first thing that should be done is an organization of the order of the activities, in such a way that the session is going to begin with a simple activity, increasing the level of difficulty in the others, and ending again with another simple activity, to increase the motivation and the personal satisfaction of the users. In case we find ourselves in a situation of low participation, the patients will be chosen to carry out the activity or the correction. If, there is an excess of participation, speaking in turns will be established and mediation will be made between the confrontations that may arise.

If the activities last longer than the established time, an activity will be eliminated from the session, since what is important is that the language is worked on, not the amount of activities that are carried out.

Final assessment

As a final evaluation in relation to this practice, it has been considered very enriching, since it has allowed to design a cognitive session for a group of users in a collective way, something necessary in occupational therapy to intervene in diverse environments or with different collectives.

It has also been considered very interesting, as it has allowed a first contact with the NeuronUP application, a really useful platform for any professional in the field of occupational therapy, as well as beneficial for all those users who make use of it.

2008-2009 on -- Mexico -- Mathematical models.

TítuloMathematical modeling and numerical simulation of tumor angiogenesis

One of the most celebrated discrete model, shown in figure 1.16c, was developed by Anderson and Chaplain (Anderson and Chaplain, 1998a; Chaplain and An- derson, 1996). They discretized the equations of a continuous model to create a Cellular Automata model that governed the TECs. The probabilities for TEC movement in the Cellular Automata included diffusion, chemotaxis, and hapto- taxis mechanisms, as in the continuous model. Notably, the results were compared with in vivo assays performed in the eye of a rabbit (Gimbrone Jr et al ., 1974) and in the cornea of a mouse (Muthukkaruppan et al ., 1982) giving successful similarities. This idea supposed a breakthrough to represent vascular structures and was further expanded to three-dimensions, to include different branching and anastomosis criteria, and to model blood flow (Chaplain, 2000; McDougall et al ., 2006, 2002, 2012; Stéphanou et al ., 2005, 2006). And, as shown in next section, many authors use modified versions of this model to simulate vascular tumor growth. In 2005, Kevrekidis and Whitaker (2005), using a similar idea, also presented a one-dimensional hybrid model (extended to two dimensions in Kevrekidis et al ., 2006) that included TAFs, ECM, proteases, and angiogenesis inhibitors. The Cellular Potts models introduced by Glazier and Graner (Graner and Glazier, 1992) were also used to model angiogenesis. Bauer et al . (2007) used such a model, where endothelial cells were able to migrate guided by chemotaxis and haptotaxis, the sprouts were able to branch and anastomose, and the extra- cellular matrix was modeled in detail. The authors extended further the model to study the influence of the ECM in TEC migration (Bauer et al ., 2009). Some other examples of Cellular Potts models include the work by Mahoney et al . (2008), where they added haptotaxis to TEC migration, and by Szabó and Czirók (2010); Szabó et al . (2008), where they studied the role of cell-cell adhesion.

Will personalized e-Learning increase deep learning in higher education?

Abstract

Purpose

Recent research in higher education has pointed out that personalized e-learning through the use of learning management systems, such as Moodle, improves the academic results of students and facilitates the detection of at-risk students.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 124 students following the Degree in Health Sciences at the University of Burgos participated in this study. The objectives were as follows: to verify whether the use of a Moodle-based personalized e-learning system will predict the learning outcomes of students and the use of effective learning behaviour patterns and to study whether it will increase student satisfaction with teaching practice.

Findings

The use of a Moodle-based personalized e-learning system that included problem-based learning (PBL) methodology predicted the learning outcomes by 42.3 per cent, especially with regard to the results of the quizzes. In addition, it predicted effective behavioural patterns by 74.2 per cent. Increased student satisfaction levels were also identified through the conceptual feedback provided by the teacher, arguably because it facilitated a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this work should be treated with caution, because of the sample size and the specificity of the branch of knowledge of the students, as well as the design type. Future studies will be directed at increasing the size of the sample and the diversity of the qualifications.

Originality/value

Learning methodology in the twenty-first century has to be guided towards carefully structured work from the pedagogic point of view in the learning management systems allowing for process-oriented feedback and PBL both included in personalized e-learning systems.

Keywords

Acknowledgements

Conflict of interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest.

The authors thank all the students who participated in this study. They are also grateful for funding for the dissemination of research results from the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Knowledge Transfer, 2018, of the Burgos, and the suggestions of the reviewers that have added to the quality of the manuscript.

Will personalized e-Learning increase deep learning in higher education?

Abstract

Purpose

Recent research in higher education has pointed out that personalized e-learning through the use of learning management systems, such as Moodle, improves the academic results of students and facilitates bank of eastman magnolia state bank detection of at-risk students.

Findings

The use of a Moodle-based personalized e-learning system that included problem-based learning (PBL) methodology predicted terapia ocupacional ubu learning outcomes by 42.3 per cent, especially with regard to the results of the quizzes.

Conflict of interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial terapia ocupacional ubu financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest.

The authors thank all the students who participated in this study. They are also grateful for funding for the dissemination of research results from the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Knowledge Transfer, 2018, of the Burgos, and the suggestions of the reviewers that have added to the quality of the manuscript.

On friday 4th of november we (Luc Vercruysse)will have a workshop of our TAPAS association at the ENOTHE meeting in Ghent.
ENOTHE is the European network for OT education.
Last summer (august 2011) we (Mieke lembrechts and Luc Vercruysse)were in Jaszkotle again for making new agreements and do an evaluation of last year.
In April 2011 TAPAS became a real registered association in Zaragoza, Aragon (Spain).
As you could see in last message we were (Luc Vercruysse and Reninka De Koker) in Esteli (Nicaragua) where we are asked to organise post graduate courses at the UPOLI university. We are working on this.
On this moment we are also constructing a new website and we will have other mailadresses.
We (Cristina de Diego, Patricia Jovellar and luc Vercruysse) also plan some other TAPAS mini conferences in Zaragoza for next spring.

The terapia ocupacional ubu for TEC movement in the Cellular Automata included diffusion, chemotaxis, and hapto- taxis mechanisms, as in the continuous model. Notably, the results were compared with in vivo assays performed in the eye of a rabbit (Gimbrone Jr et al ., the skeleton key in hindi download and in the cornea of a mouse (Muthukkaruppan et al ., 1982) giving successful similarities. And, as shown in next section, many authors use modified versions of this model to simulate vascular tumor terapia ocupacional ubu. Bauer et al. Some other examples of Cellular Potts models include the work by Mahoney et al. (2008), where they added haptotaxis to TEC migration, and by Szabó and Czirók (2010); Szabó et al. (2008), where they studied the role of cell-cell adhesion.
