"Got Your Back" Terms and Conditions

Effective Date: 6/24/2021

The “Got Your Back” overdraft protection program (the “Program”) provides for payment of debit card purchase, check, or ACH payment transactions that would cause an overdraft of up to $50.00 based on the balance in your T-Mobile MONEY Checking Account if you meet the qualification criteria for the Program and adhere to the Program Terms and Conditions outlined below.

Qualification Criteria:

In order to participate in the Program, you must be actively enrolled in perks. Perks is a program that enables account holders who enroll in the program to receive additional benefits and promotions through their T-Mobile MONEY Checking Accounts. Perks are available for all T-Mobile wireless customers in the continental U.S., registered with perks and with active post- paid wireless plans. E.g. T-Mobile ONE, T-Mobile ONE+ and Simple Choice plan(s) and other postpaid plans, excluding the No Credit Check plan. Prepaid plans and METRO by T-Mobile do not qualify for perks. Each individual on a qualifying account is eligible for a separate T-Mobile MONEY account.

Businesses, partnerships, and/or other legal entities are not eligible to open T-Mobile MONEY Checking Accounts and as such are also not eligible to participate in perks. However, individuals who have a wireless line on an eligible T-Mobile business plan and open a T-Mobile MONEY account for personal use in accordance with the Account Terms and Conditions are eligible for perks. Perks are unavailable to the extent prohibited by law. Please contact a T-Mobile MONEY Specialist at (866) 686-9358 for specific requests pertaining to perks eligibility.

Got Your Back overdraft protection will begin when all of the following conditions are met:

1. You are enrolled in an active T-Mobile postpaid wireless plan (e.g. T-Mobile ONE, T-Mobile ONE+ and Simple Choice plan(s) and other postpaid plans, excluding the No Credit Check plan (a “Qualifying Plan”));

2. You have registered through the Website or the App for perks with your T-Mobile ID; and

3. At least 10 qualifying purchases using your T-Mobile MONEY Mastercard® Debit Card have posted to your Checking Account in a single calendar month. For purchases to count in a given month, they must post before the last business day of the month. Qualifying purchases posting on or after the last business day of the month count toward the next month’s qualifying purchases, however you are only required to meet this purchase requirement once to receive Got Your Back benefits. “Posted” (“posting” and “post”) means that a given purchase has been finalized by the merchant and communicated to the bank. Posting does not always occur on the date the transaction was authorized.

A "qualifying purchase" is a purchase of goods or services made through use of the T-Mobile MONEY Mastercard® Debit Card, whether you use the physical card, the card numbers (as with a “card not present” transaction on the Internet), or an e-wallet like Apple Pay®, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. Purchases will qualify regardless of whether “debit” or “credit” is chosen at the point of sale.

Qualifying purchases do not include, without limitation, the following:

  • Transactions at ATMs, including but not limited to cash withdrawals.
  • Over the counter cash withdrawals that do not include a purchase.
  • Cash advances on your T-Mobile MONEY Mastercard® Debit Card.
  • Transfers from the T-Mobile MONEY Mastercard® Debit Card via external peer-to-peer (P2P) transfer services, including, but not limited to, PayPal®, Venmo®, Cash App®, Zelle®, and Apple Cash® or similar services.
  • Credits to your T-Mobile MONEY Mastercard® Debit Card (for example a refund or return).
  • ACH debits from merchants, utility service providers and other financial institutions.
  • ACH transfers from the T-Mobile MONEY Checking Account to another bank account you own made using the Website or the App.
  • Payments made using the bill payment feature in the T-Mobile MONEY Online Bill Payment Service.
  • Transfers or withdrawals from the T-Mobile MONEY Checking Account.
  • Purchase authorizations / Pending purchases / Holds that have not yet posted to your T-Mobile MONEY Checking Account.

Terms and Conditions:

The Got Your Back overdraft protection program provides for payment of debit card purchase, check, or ACH payment transactions that would cause an overdraft of up to $50.00 based on the balance in your checking account. This does not include other types of transactions such as ATM withdrawals, same-day electronic bill payments, or point of sale purchases that include cash back.

You will need to bring your account to a positive balance no later than 30 calendar days from the date your account becomes negative. This means that the balance must be positive at the close of the banking day. This includes the amount of any and all transactions that were paid through this Program while the account was negative. For example, if we covered a $20 transaction on August 1 that brought your account balance to -$20, then we covered a $10 transaction on August 15 that brought your account balance to -$30, you would need to bring the account to a positive balance (i.e. a deposit of at least $30 must post to your account) by the end of the banking day on August 31 and the balance must remain positive through the close of the banking day to satisfy this requirement. Failure to do so may disqualify you from this Program.

See Account Disclosures / Terms and Conditions for details on deposits, availability, bank business days and bank hours.

If your Qualifying Plan is terminated for any reason, your participation in this Program will be terminated on the business day on which you become ineligible.

We reserve the right to change the terms, conditions, and qualifications for this Program at any time. Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall modify your responsibility to keep your account in good standing and repay the total amount of any and all overdrafts according to the parameters set forth in the Account Disclosures / Terms and Conditions.

Pros and Cons of Smartphone Leasing

Smartphones make everyday life easier on many levels. Whether you want to log in to online banking, get directions when taking a road trip, or check the weather, you can do it all with a smartphone. That convenience can come at a price, however. Some premium smartphone models cost more than $1,000 on average, as of 2020.

Leasing a smartphone may seem like a more attractive option than buying one, if you would like to have the latest model without the high price tag.

Key Takeaways

  • Premium smartphone models can easily sell for $1,000 or more on average.
  • Leasing a smartphone offers the benefit of being able to upgrade to the latest models regularly without incurring contract fees.
  • Keeping a smartphone at the end of a lease term may require paying a buyout fee to purchase it.
  • Leasing could save money over buying new phones, but it doesn’t convey ownership, similar to leasing a car or an apartment.

What Is Smartphone Leasing?

Leasing a smartphone is similar to leasing a car or an apartment. You sign a lease with a smartphone-leasing company, which gives you the right to use the smartphone for a set period of time. In return, you make lease payments.

It’s important to note that leasing is not the same as buying a phone on an installment plan, which many cellphone networks also offer as an option for making smartphones more affordable. Spectrum, for example, allows you to pay in 24 monthly installments, after which you own the phone outright.

When you lease, you generally need to make one initial payment up front, followed by weekly, biweekly, or monthly payments. The length of the lease term can vary from one provider to the next. T-Mobile, for example, offers 18-month smartphone leasing.

At the end of the lease term, you have the option to:

  • Return the phone and lease a different one.
  • Sign a new lease for the same smartphone.
  • Purchase the smartphone that you’ve been leasing.

You also may be able to lease accessories for the phone, such as Bluetooth earpieces or car chargers. Anything you pay toward the lease covers only the physical use of the phone; you need to pay for cellphone service separately.

Smartphone leasing may or may not require a credit check, depending on the company from which you’re getting the phone. This could make it a good option for people who don’t have sufficient credit to purchase a regular contract phone.

Pros and Cons of Smartphone Leasing

Leasing a smartphone could make more sense than buying one in some cases. Whether it’s right for you can depend on your credit, budget, and needs. Here’s a quick look at how the pros and cons of smartphone leasing compare.

Pros
  • Regular upgrades are available.

  • It may be less expensive than buying.

  • Credit may not be an obstacle.

Cons
  • The leasing company owns the phone.

  • Buyout fees may apply.

  • Leasing can involve additional fees.

Regular upgrades are available

Smartphone technology is constantly evolving and adapting, with new models being released all the time. If you’re a tech aficionado, then leasing a smartphone makes it easier to upgrade when a new model comes along. Depending on the length of the lease term, it’s possible to get a new phone every year, allowing you to keep up with the latest technological advancements.

It may be less expensive than buying

Though a typical premium smartphone model can run in the range of $1,000 or more, the global average smartphone selling price in 2021 is only $363. Leasing one may require you to make a small initial payment of $50 to $100, followed by low monthly payments. At T-Mobile, for example, it’s possible to pay as little as $8.25 per month to lease a Samsung Galaxy A11 for 18 months, with $0 down. That’s $148.50, which is $32.50 less than the phone’s standard list price of $180.

The most expensive phone that T-Mobile leases is the Apple iPhone 12 64GB, with a list price of $699. You pay $26.12 per month on an 18-month lease, plus $150 down. This comes to a total of $620.16, which gives you a savings of $78.84.

If you turn in your phone after 18 months for a new phone, and if you make sure that the total lease cost on your new phone will be less than its list price, then you will continue to come out ahead of the game. Still, you’ll likely be paying nearly what the phone costs without ever owning it.

Credit may not be an obstacle

A credit check is standard for many cellular service providers when applying for a contract phone.Poor credit may not result in a denial of service, but you may have to offer a larger deposit to get a phone. With smartphone leasing, poor credit or no credit history at all may not be a roadblock to getting service.

Smartphone leasing may require a hard or soft credit check, so you should ask about this before applying for a lease.

Leasing company owns the phone

When you lease a smartphone, you don’t own it; the cellphone company or lease provider does. Again, that’s similar to leasing an apartment or a vehicle. On the other hand, when you purchase a smartphone, it’s yours. That means that you can decide what to do with it, including whether to keep it or sell it to someone else. You don’t have that option with leasing, unless you decide to buy the phone later.

Buyout fees may apply

If you have the option at the end of the lease term to purchase a smartphone that you’ve been leasing, it’s important to consider the buyout fee. This is a fee that you pay to own the phone going forward. The amount that you’ll pay to buy a leased phone can vary from company to company, so it’s important to read the fine print beforehand. That way, you can run the numbers to understand whether it’s cheaper to lease and then buy, as opposed to skipping leasing and just buying the phone up front.

Leasing can involve additional fees

When you lease a car, the dealership can charge additional fees for wear and tear or high mileage when you turn it in at the end of the lease term. The same thing can happen with leasing a smartphone. If you turn in a device that’s damaged beyond what’s expected for normal use, you could be charged extra fees.

When choosing a smartphone lease, also calculate the cost of any minimum service plans that you’re required to have for the device to work properly.

The Bottom Line

Smartphones today are increasingly ubiquitous and changing the world in which we live. Leasing a smartphone is something you may consider if you would rather not be committed to a single phone model for the long term. It also could be a good fit if you have calculated the cost differences between buying a phone outright and leasing and have determined that the latter is less expensive. Before signing a smartphone lease, be sure to read through the details carefully to understand what you’ll pay and what your options are once the lease term expires.

T-Mobile will accept numerous forms of verification, but the most common documents are DD214, leave and earnings statement, and military orders.

What do I do if my military status changes?

This offer is open to current and former military members, so you will not need to contact T-Mobile. Your eligibility will remain intact and you will not need to change your plan. T-Mobile ONE Military is available to all military, veterans, National Guard, Reserve, and Gold Star family members.

T-Mobile Military Pricing

The most important thing to know about this military discount is that it is a permanent discount. This is not a promotional discount. Of course, things are subject to change. So it never hurts to take advantage of great offers when they pop up.

The T-Mobile Military Discount is on the T-Mobile Magenta® Military plan and the Magenta® Plus Military plan. Here are the current rates (and remember, unlike most cell phone carriers, T-Mobile plans include all taxes and fees).

T-Mobile Military Discount Pricing

Here are current rates for the T-Mobile Magenta® Military plan with AutoPay enabled (lines cost $5 more per month if you do not enable AutoPay):

  • Line 1 – $55 (20% off standard pricing)
  • Line 2 – $40 per line (50% off standard pricing)
  • Line 3 – $30 per line
  • Line 4 – $25 Per line
  • Line 5 – $22 Per line

Again, the price you see is the price you pay. All taxes and fees are included.

T-Mobile May Even Pay Off Your Current Phone or Early Termination Fees

T-Mobile is doing their best to grow their customer base. And they don’t want something like a cell-phone contract to get in the way of adding customers. So they are willing to pay your early termination fees if you need to break your contract to change carriers.

Get a new phone and we’ll pay off your current phone and service contracts – up to $650 per line or $350 in early termination fees, via prepaid card when you trade-in your device.

As you can imagine, there are some terms:

Limited-time offer; subject to change. Eligible device trade-in, new device purchase, qualifying credit, port-in from eligible carriers, and qualifying service required. Payments consist of (1) credit for device trade-in and (2) virtual prepaid MasterCard® Card in amount of carrier’s Early Termination Fee or remaining device balance, including lease purchase option if applicable, minus trade-in credit (expires in 12 months). Tax excluded. Submit proof of balance (limit $650 per individual) & 90+ days with carrier within 30 days of port-in and be active and in good standing when processed; allow 8 weeks. We might ask for more information. Up to 5 lines; must be activated in same market with same billing address. One offer per subscriber. T-Mobile Prepaid MasterCard Card is rebate/reimbursement or exchange on new device, service, or port-in; for any tax implications, consult a tax advisor. No money has been paid by you for the card. How Much Can T-Mobile Save You?

T-Mobile claims their current military discount can save a family of four $764 compared to Verizon’s military discount program and $665 compared to AT&T’s military discount. Of course, your savings will vary based on your current cell phone plan and the number of lines you add.

As with all offers, it’s a good idea to run the numbers to see which carrier is the best for your needs.

For my current situation, my wife and I would pay a comparable amount per month for the cell phone line (actually $5 per month cheaper with T-Mobile). But we also subscribe to Netflix and pay that out of pocket. So we would save an additional $10.99 per month on the Netflix subscription.

$16 per month works out to $192 per year, which is a decent savings.

We could possibly save more than that, because I pay $10 a month on a mobile hotspot through T-Mobile. Under the T-Mobile military discount, you can use your phones as a hotspot. So I may be able to save around $312 per year.

Now we’re talking real savings!

The only downside? I would need to buy two new phones, because my wife and I have Sprint phones, which are on a different network. AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM network, and Verizon and Sprint are both on the CDMA network.

So I need to check with my wife and see if we wan to buy new phones and switch networks. Buying new phones will delay the payoff, but it should equal out over time.

Should You Switch to the T-Mobile Military One Plan?

Overall, I have to say that T-Mobile offers the best bang for your buck out of all the major cell phone carriers. Their military discount is also the most generous of all the cell phone providers.

Is it right for you?

Only you can answer that.

I recommend looking at several factors:

  • How the T-Mobile network is in your area
  • The monthly cost of the T-Mobile Military One Plan compared to your current plan
  • Other potential cost savings (Netflix subscription, being able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot, unlimited talk, text, and data, etc.)
  • Additional features – unlimited text and data overseas, unlimited media streaming
  • Whether or not you would need to buy new phones
  • Whether or not T-Mobile will assist you with buying out your current contract

Overall, I’d say T-Mobile will work for a lot of folks. But in other cases, you may currently have a better or more cost-effective plan. If so, stay with what works.

How Do Cell Phone Payments Affect Your Credit Score?

We pay a lot of bills every month. While some of them help our credit scores, there are others that don’t help our credit scores, even when they’re paid on time. Monthly cell phone payments fit into the latter category.

Why Timely Cell Phone Payments Don’t Help Your Credit Score

Cell phone providers usually don't report regular payments to the credit bureaus, even though they check your credit score to decide whether to approve you for a phone contract or an installment plan for a new phone. That means that no matter how many times you make your cell phone payment on time, it won’t help your credit score since the cell phone company is not reporting your on-time payments to the credit bureaus. It seems a little unfair that your credit is used to make a decision about a financial obligation that can’t help your credit.

Cell phone providers will also check your credit if you want to finance a new cell phone. Many cell phone carriers now require you to purchase or lease a new cell phone. Either way, you'll likely end up with an installment plan for your new phone with small monthly payments included with your monthly service fee.

When you're getting a new phone, the carrier will perform a credit check to determine whether you qualify for financing and under what terms. Even though you’re essentially being extended a loan to pay for your new phone, the payments won’t be directly reported to the credit bureaus and won’t help your credit score.

New Cell Phone Applications and Late Payments Can Hurt Your Score

The inquiries made to your credit history when you establish a new service or finance a cell phone can affect your credit. Credit inquiries are 10% of your credit score and affect your credit for 12 months. After 24 months, inquiries fall off your credit report completely.

While timely cell phone payments don’t help your credit score, late payments can hurt it. Just one or two late payments typically won’t hurt your credit, as long as you catch up on the past due amount before your contract is terminated and your former carrier turns your account over to collections.

If you stop making cell phone payments and your account is subsequently closed, the cell phone carrier may send your account to a collection agency for payment. The collection will be listed on your credit report and will severely hurt your credit score. You could also hurt your credit score if you terminate your contract prematurely or disconnect your services without completely paying the early termination fee or the balance remaining on your phone.

Once a delinquent cell phone balance is on your credit report, it will stay there for seven years like most other negative credit information. Your credit score will take the biggest hit in the first few years after the delinquency is added to your credit score, but your credit score can rebound with time if you make all your other credit-related payments on time and avoid future any future collections.

Possible Workarounds

Even though cell phone and utility payments are not directly reported to the credit bureaus, you can use a service like Experian Boost to monitor your checking account for on-time payments to utility and cell phone companies. You can add up to 24 months of payment history from the service providers of your choice to your credit history, potentially boosting your credit score.

Another workaround is to use a credit card to make your cell phone payments. Then, turn around and pay your credit card bill. The timely payments on your credit card will help boost your credit score.

Some credit cards even provide cell phone protection insurance if you pay your bill with your credit card. Check the terms of your credit card rewards program to see if this is the case for your credit card.
