The Child Tax Credit Update Portal allows families to update direct deposit information or unenroll

COVID Tax Tip 2021-101, July 14, 2021

The IRS recently upgraded the Child Tax Credit Update Portal to enable families to update their bank account information so they can receive their monthly Child Tax Credit payment. The tool also allows families to unenroll from the advance payments if they don't want to receive them. The Update Portal is available only on IRS.gov.

Any updates made by August 2 will apply to the August 13 payment and all subsequent monthly payments for the rest of 2021. Families will receive their July 15 payment by direct deposit in the bank account currently on file with the IRS.

People without current bank account information can use the online tool to update their information so they can get the payments sooner by direct deposit. Those who are not enrolled for direct deposit will receive a check.

How to update direct deposit information

First, families should use the Child Tax Credit Update Portal to confirm their eligibility for payments. If eligible, the tool will also indicate whether they are enrolled to receive their payments by direct deposit.

If so, it will list the full bank routing number and the last four digits of their account number. This is the account that will receive their July 15 payment.

If they choose, they can change the bank account receiving the payment starting with the August 13 payment.

If the Update Portal shows a family is eligible to receive payments but not enrolled to receive them by direct deposit, they will receive a mailed check each month. If they want to receive their payments by direct deposit, they can use the Update Portal to add their bank account information. Couples who are married and file jointly must both update their bank account information the same day to the same account to continue getting joint payments.

Any family receiving checks should consider switching to direct deposit to access their money quicker. Direct deposit removes the time, worry and expense of cashing a check, and eliminates the chance of a lost, stolen or undelivered check. People who don't have a bank account can visit the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation website for details on opening an account online or use the FDIC's BankFind tool to locate an FDIC-insured bank. BankOn, American Bankers Association, Independent Community Bankers of America, and the National Credit Union Administration have lists of banks and credit unions that can open an account online.

Families can stop payments anytime

Even after payments begin, families can stop all future monthly payments by using the unenroll feature in the Child Tax Credit Update Portal. Eligible families who make this choice will still receive the rest of their child tax credit as a lump sum when they file their 2021 federal income tax return next year. To stop all payments starting in August and the rest of 2021, they must unenroll by August 2, 2021.

Who should unenroll?

Some families may prefer to receive the entire credit as a refund when they file their 2021 return. The portal's unenroll feature can also be helpful to any family that no longer qualifies for the child tax credit or believes they will not qualify when they file their 2021 return. Married filing joint taxpayers both need to unenroll. If one spouse does not unenroll, they will get half of the joint payment they were supposed to receive with their spouse.

For more information about the unenrollment process, including deadlines, see Topic J of the Child Tax Credit FAQs on IRS.gov.

The IRS will add more features to the Child Tax Credit Update Portal through the summer and fall. Soon people will be able update their mailing address. By fall, people will be able to use the tool to update changes to family status and income. More information is on the Advance Child Tax Credit Payments in 2021 page of IRS.gov

Chime Spending Account Review: Low-Fee Checking Alternative

Chime Bank App

Mobile-focused banks or financial services companies are changing the traditional banking model.

Instead of heading to a branch, they let you manage your money completely online.

And it gets even better.

Fees are usually fewer while the money management features are plentiful. And, you may earn better rates on savings and other deposit accounts.

Chime is one of the popular companies you might consider for a non-traditional bank account.

But is it right for you?

This Chime Spending Account review offers a closer look at the features, fees, and overall user experience you can expect when you move your money here.

All About Automatic Savings

Chime offers two types of accounts: Chime spending account and savings account. For this review, we'll focus mainly on the Chime Spending Account.

The spending account is much like a traditional checking account that comes with:

  • Visa debit card access
  • Direct deposit
  • Mobile check deposit
  • Fee-free mobile payments to friends and family
  • Free ATM withdrawals at over 38,000 fee-free ATMs
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay support
  • Instant transaction alerts and balance notifications
  • FDIC-insured protection
  • The ability to send paper checks by mail

Here's more on how the different benefits associated with the Chime Spending Account work.

Avoid overdraft fees with SpotMe

Overdraft fees can take a big bite out of your bank account. SpotMe helps you avoid that.

With SpotMe, Chime will spot you up to $100 on debit card purchases with no overdraft fees.

If you overdraw your account with a debit card purchase, Chime will cover you up to the $100 limit. When you make a deposit to your Chime Spending Account, it's credited to your negative balance.

This is a fee-free service that's different from overdraft protection at traditional banks.

When you opt-in to overdraft protection transfers, the bank can transfer money from savings to checking to cover overdrafts. But that usually means paying a fee.

You pay nothing to use SpotMe unless you want to. This benefit has an optional tip feature.

To be eligible for SpotMe, you just need to have qualifying monthly direct deposits of $500 or more.

Get paid earlier with direct deposit

Direct deposit can make your life easier. You can get paid without having to take your check to a branch or use mobile deposit.

The Chime Spending Account touts direct deposit as a key feature. You can get paid up to two days early, which is convenient.

Enrolling is easy too.

When you open a spending account, Chime gives you a prefilled form you can give to your employer to set up direct deposit for your paycheck.

Send (and receive) money for free

The Pay Friends feature lets you send money instantly to friends,
family or roommates from your Chime Spending Account.

There are no fees to send money with Pay Friends.

All you need is an email address or phone number for the person you want to send money to.

If a Chime member sends you money, you can access it instantly. That's a difference from other payment apps that require you to transfer money to another bank account before you can use it.

Secure your card instantly

One cool feature included with Chime Spending Accounts helps with fraud prevention.

If your debit card is lost or stolen, you can disable it with a simple swipe in the Chime mobile banking app.

This prevents new cash withdrawals at ATMs and new debit card transactions.

You can also set up transaction alerts to keep tabs on account activity. This is an easy way to know what's happening with your money on a day-to-day basis.

How Do the Fees Compare?

Online bank accounts tend to be fee-friendly and there's a simple reason why.

Compared to traditional brick-and-mortar banks, financial companies that operate only tend to have lower overhead costs. So they can pass that savings on to customers in the form of higher rates.

If you want to avoid high bank account fees, Chime fits the bill.

With the Chime Spending Account, you pay no:

  • Monthly maintenance fees
  • Overdraft fees
  • Minimum balance fees
  • Debit card replacement fees
  • ACH transfer fees

Additionally, Chime doesn't charge any foreign transaction fees if you use your debit card outside the U.S.

Basically, Chime tries to keep managing your money as cost-friendly and straightforward as possible.

ATM Access

With the Chime Spending Account, you get a Visa debit card that you can use to withdraw cash or make purchases. Being able to get cash when you need it is an important feature to have with any bank account.

Chime recognizes that by partnering with ATM networks that can provide widespread access to surcharge-free ATMs.

Altogether, Chime has a network of 38,000 fee-free ATMs through MoneyPass and Visa Plus Alliance.

So:

Customers won't pay any fees as long as they stick to ATMs in their respective partnered networks.

But, you may pay a fee for an out-of-network ATM.

Chime charges $2.50 for out-of-network ATM and over-the-counter withdrawals.

Note: Owners of the out-of-network ATMs can also impose a surcharge. And Chime doesn't refund foreign ATM fees.

The Chime mobile app offers an ATM locator feature so you can easily find a machine nearby when you need one.

Mobile Banking

Mobile banking access matters when you're managing a bank account online only.

The Chime mobile app is convenient and easy to use. With the app, you're able to:

  • Review balance information
  • Schedule transfers between a Chime Spending Account and a savings account
  • Look for fee-free ATMs near you
  • Schedule mobile check deposits
  • View bank account statements
  • Schedule person-to-person payments
  • Track your budget
  • Block potentially fraudulent transactions

The app has great ratings in both the Apple store and the Google Play store.

Can You Open Other Accounts With Chime?

If you need more than just a spending account, here are some other ways to manage your money with Chime.

Chime Savings Account

Aside from a spending account, you can also open a Chime Savings Account. This is something you might be interested in if you have a particular money goal you're focused on.

Chime makes reaching savings goals easier in two ways.

First, there's the Save When You Spend feature.

Every time you make a purchase or pay a bill with your Chime Visa debit card, the transaction is rounded up to the nearest dollar.

The Round Up difference is transferred from your spending account to your savings account. This happens automatically so you can save without thinking about it.

Second, you can save when you get paid. Chime members can automatically transfer 10% of every paycheck straight to their savings account on payday.

So, do you get a great APY with a Chime Savings Account?

Compared to what you'll get with a traditional savings account, yes.

Chime advertises an APY that's 10x higher than the national average. And you pay no monthly maintenance fees for this savings account.

But you may find another online savings account that offers a better rate, so it's worth comparison shopping.

Chime Credit Builder Visa Secured Credit Card

Credit cards can be useful for building credit history. But if you're new to using credit you may be limited to secured cards.

These cards typically require a cash deposit to open. And they can come with high fees or APRs.

The Chime Credit Builder Visa Secured Credit Card is different. This card helps you build credit with:

  • No annual fees or interest
  • No credit check to apply
  • No minimum security deposit

You move money from your Chime Spending Account to your Credit Builder Card. This is the amount you can use to make purchases.

That feature makes it easy to control your balance so you don't end up with debt.

This card also makes it easier to establish good credit with the Safer Credit Building feature.

When you activate this feature, your balance is paid automatically on time each month. That helps you avoid late payment fees and negative credit score marks.

Since there's no hard credit check to apply, you may be able to get this card even if you have zero credit history.

Is a Chime Spending Account Right for You?

The Chime Spending Account is notable for being light on fees and including features that make it easy to get paid and save money.

You might consider a move to Chime if:

  • You don't need branch banking access
  • You're interested in using direct deposit to get paid early
  • Avoiding banking fees is a priority
  • You want to earn a decent rate on savings
  • You're interested in the Chime Credit Builder Visa

Banking with Chime is painless, thanks to the mobile app. A large ATM network also makes getting cash when you need it easier.

Of course, take time to compare other online bank accounts first before making a decision.

One of the reasons so many people are moving from traditional banks to Chime is because of Chime’s customer-friendly deposit rules. Chime seems eager to get your money into your account, which is perfect for folks who always seem to be running a little low on funds by the end of a pay period.

The below article provides answers to a wide variety of questions related to Chime deposits.

1. What Time Does Chime Direct Deposit Hit?

The latest Chime posts your direct deposit is 9 AM EST on your payday. So if your work says your payday is on the 15th, then your deposit should be posted no later than 9 AM EST on the 15th. This 9 AM EST payday rule is the latest you should receive a deposit; so the worst-case scenario.

2. What Time Does Chime EARLY Direct Deposit Hit?

An image of a hand holding a phone with the Chime app on it. A green background and the Chime logo is in the backdrop.

If 9 AM EST on payday is the worst-case scenario for getting your direct deposit, then what is the best-case scenario? What about Chime’s promise to “Get your paycheck up to two days early”?

We’ll let Chime’s fine print answer first:

Early access to direct deposit funds depends on the timing of the submission of the payment file from the payer. We generally make these funds available on the day the payment file is received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the scheduled payment date.

The short answer is: The speed in which you get a deposit depends on how quickly your company’s payroll sends the money. If your payday is Friday, it is possible you will get your money at some time on Wednesday, some time on Thursday, or by 9 AM on Friday.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure what time an early direct deposit will come in.

To be clear — we are not saying Chime’s early deposit advertising is false. The early direct deposit is absolutely true. There are a ton of customers who successfully receive their direct deposit 1-2 days in advance of their payday. But there are some customers who only get their deposit on payday. In the cases of deposits arriving on payday, the finger of blame can usually be pointed at the customer’s company payroll department, and not at Chime.

Here is a quick, simplified lesson on how your pay is delivered from your company to your bank. For this example, let’s assume you get paid on Friday.

First, a note about modern banking. The vast majority of computer transactions are done in batches. So a bank may collect data throughout the day and hold it in a temporary data location. In the middle of the night (1 AM for example), the batch process executes and all of the day’s data is transferred from a temporary data location into the bank’s main computers. This is why you will see, in the below example, each step taking a day to complete; a bank’s computers only batch process once a day.

  1. Saturday: The company payroll department creates a file that shows each employee’s name, bank routing number, bank account number, what the payment amount should be, and what date the money should be deposited (Friday in this example).
  1. Sunday: The company sends their payroll file to the company’s bank
  1. Monday: The company’s bank processes the file, and then sends their own file over to the federal bank (i.e. Federal Reserve, Automated Clearinghouse).

To be clear, no money has changed hands yet. The banks are simply communicating future expectations to each other, like digital IOU notes. The Feds are sitting in the middle, helping to pass the notes.

  1. Tuesday: The federal bank sends a notification out to all of the banks in the country, telling them what the Friday IOUs are.
  1. Wednesday: All customer banks receive the Fed IOU file. Remember, no money has changed hands yet.

This is where the Chime magic happens. Chime quickly processes the Fed IOU file, and then using Chime’s own money, funds the customer’s account with their Friday pay. Basically, Chime trusts the company bank and Feds enough to front you the payday money early.

  1. Wednesday: The company bank actually sends the money over to the Feds.
  1. Thursday: The Feds actually send the money over to the customer’s banks.
  1. Friday: This is when a traditional bank funds its customer accounts.  So the banks have known since Wednesday that the money is coming, but they don’t disperse the funds until the funds are actually in hand.

Chime already dispersed the funds on Wednesday. So when the real money comes in,  Chime just puts it back into their own piggy bank.

The above shows there are a lot of steps to get your paycheck deposit, but steps #1 and #2 are the most unpredictable — when your company runs its payroll file and transmits it over to the company’s bank. If your company runs the file later than usual, then your deposit may come in later than usual. Steps #3-#8 are all automated and tend to run without problems.

3. Does Chime Direct Deposit Hit at Midnight?

No, there is nothing special about midnight. Chime will deposit your money after its computers have batch processed the payment notification file coming from the Feds. Early deposits can occur at any time of the day, 1-2 days prior to your payday. Deposits made on payday can be posted anytime between midnight and 9 AM EST.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know the exact time a deposit will be posted. Even Chime can’t know for sure because sometimes the computer batch job runs slow, or sometimes your payment is sitting at the end of the file.

4. How Long Does Chime Direct Deposit Take?

Chime will typically post your paycheck about 3 days after your employer submits the payroll file to the employer’s bank. This should get you the money 2 days before your actual payday.

5. Why is my Chime Direct Deposit Late?

If a few hours late: It is normal for early direct deposits to post at different times of the day. So if your payday is Friday, and you normally get an early deposit on Wednesday, that deposit may be posted at any time on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know the exact time a deposit will be posted. Even Chime can’t know for sure because sometimes the computer batch job runs slow, or sometimes your deposit is sitting at the end of their computer file.

If a day or more late: Chances are your direct deposit is late because your employer sent in their payroll file later than usual. Significant delays inside the Federal Reserve and banking computers are rare. This is usually an employer payroll problem.

6. Does Chime Deposit on Weekends?

No, Chime deposits Monday-Friday, not on Saturday/Sunday, and not on a bank holiday.

Does Chime Deposit on Saturdays?

No, Chime will not deposit on a Saturday or Sunday. They do not deposit on a bank holiday either. Deposits only occur Monday-Friday.

7. Does Chime Deposit on Sundays?

No, Chime will not deposit on a Sunday or Saturday. They only deposit Monday-Friday as long as it is not a bank holiday.

8. Will Chime Deposit Today?

Chime deposits Monday-Friday, as long as it is not a bank holiday. They do not deposit on Saturday or Sunday.

9. How Long Does Chime Mobile Check Deposit Take?

Checks should clear in 1-3 business days, depending on the amount of the check and who has written the check (large dollar amounts and personal checks could take the full 3 days to clear). So if you deposit a small check before 5 PM EST, all of the money should be available to you by the next morning.

When you make the deposit, the Chime app should tell you when your funds will be available to you.

Note: Mobile check deposit is not available for all Chime customers. Mobile check deposit is only available to customers who are actively using their Chime account as a primary bank — you need to have an active direct deposit coming in and be actively using your debit card. This is a risk/security measure to give Chime confidence you are not a scammer.

10. How Long Does Chime Mobile Deposit Take?

Small checks and government (stimulus) checks should clear in 1 business day. Larger checks and personal checks may take up to 3 business days. When you make the deposit, the app should tell you how long it will take for the funds to be deposited.

How Long Does Chime Mobile Check Deposit Take with Chime?

Many checks will clear in just 1 business day. Some personal checks and large dollar amount checks may take up to 3 business days to clear. Pay attention when you do the mobile deposit as the app should tell you when your funds will be available.

11. Does Chime Tell You if You Have a Pending Deposit?

Yes, pending deposits will appear on the activity page of the Chime app. Deposits that are pending finalization appear in a grey color. This money is not yet available for you to spend.

Cleared deposits show up in a green color and you are free to spend this money.

Keep in mind that Chime tries to process your deposits quickly. So, you may not see the deposit as grey pending because Chime has moved it to green available so quickly.

12. Can You See a Pending Deposit on Chime?

Pending deposits will appear as a grey colored transaction on the main activity page of the app. These deposits are pending final validation and the money is not yet available for you to spend.

13. Does Chime Show Pending Deposits?

Yes, the main activity screen on the Chime app will show pending deposits in a grey color. You will need to wait 1-3 more business days for these to flip to green before you can spend the money.

14. How to Check Pending Deposits on Chime?

Open the Chime app and look at the main activity screen. Pending deposits will appear in a grey color. Within 1-3 business days these should flip to a green color and you can spend the money.

15. Does Chime Accept SBA Loan Deposits?

Chime says they will reject a SBA Loan deposit because their accounts are meant for personal use, not business use. Chime may also be rejecting SBA Loan deposits due to concerns of fraud.

If a bank rejects your SBA Loan deposit, there is no need to panic. The money is not lost. The SBA will contact you and you can provide them info for a different bank.

Note: there have been some stories from business owners who claim they have had no problem using Chime to run their business, including receiving SBA Loan funds. It is unclear why some funds are accepted and others rejected.

Our recommendation for any business owner who spends or receives large funds is to move your business to a more traditional bank where these kinds of rejects are not occurring. Chime has clearly said their platform is not meant for businesses, so we suggest moving to a bank that is more business-friendly.

16. Does Chime Accept PPP Loan Deposits?

The Chime deposit agreement says that Chime is meant for personal use, not business use. As a result, business owners are expressing some confusion and frustration over how Chime is handling their PPP Loan deposits. Many PPP deposits are being rejected, while some are being accepted.

Chime has publicly said they are trying to reject these PPP Loan deposits because their platform is not meant for businesses. They may also be having concerns about fraud.

Our advice for any business owner who spends or receives large funds is to move your business to a more traditional bank where these kinds of rejects are not occurring. Chime has clearly said their platform is not meant for businesses, so we suggest moving to a bank that is more business-friendly.

17. What Time Does Chime Deposit Tax Refunds?

There is nothing special about a tax refund that would give it different timing than every other type of deposit. Chime will deposit your money after its computers have batch processed overnight. This can occur anytime between midnight and 9 AM EST.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know the exact time a deposit will be posted. Even Chime can’t know for sure because sometimes the computer batch job runs slow, or sometimes your deposit is sitting at the end of their computer file.

18. When Does DoorDash Direct Deposit Hit Chime?

The timing of DoorDash payments is primarily driven by the DoorDash payroll calendar. It appears that DoorDash closes their week on Sunday night and then transmits the pay information on Monday morning. DoorDash users report receiving their deposit in their Chime account late on Monday or some time on Tuesday.

19. Does Chime Require Direct Deposit?

No, you can use Chime without a direct deposit. Just note that Chime may choose to limit the features available to you such as removing your ability to do mobile check deposits.

20. Can Someone Deposit Money into my Chime Account?

Banking regulations generally prohibit third parties (people not listed as an account owner) from making deposits into other people’s accounts. There is a risk of fraud and money laundering.

The only way for a third party to deposit money into your account is for them to pretend to be you; e.g. have access to your login information, debit card, PIN, etc.

These steps seem unnecessarily risky and complicated when there are much easier methods to send money to someone, like using Cash App.

21. What Bank Does Chime Use for Direct Deposit?

Chime itself is a financial technology (fin tech) company that focuses on building the app. Bancorp Bank delivers the banking services for Chime.

Chime Review

Warning

There are recent reports that Chime has been closing and freezing accounts without notifying its customers. We are monitoring the situation and will update this review as facts develop.

Whom Is Chime Best For?

Chime should appeal to consumers who want a simple, no-fuss deposit account with minimal fees and mobile-friendly features. It may be a good fit for you if you want to:

  • Get access to direct deposit funds earlier
  • Open a savings account with no minimum balance requirement
  • Open a checking account with a debit card and no overdraft fees
  • Instantly send money to Chime account holders with no additional fee
  • Open an account but have a poor banking history

What Does Chime Offer?

Chime's offerings are limited to three basic services:

Checking Account

Spending Account

Chime’s Spending Account, the equivalent of a checking account, gives you access to your direct deposits as early as two days sooner than traditional banks.

You may not always get your paycheck early, though, as Chime's fine print says early delivery is based on the payer’s support of the feature and timing of the payer’s funding.

While a bank may leave you struggling to figure out how to maneuver around the monthly account, Chime keeps it simple with almost no fees at all. There’s no opening deposit requirement, no minimum balance requirement, and no monthly fee. The only fee listed is an out-of-network ATM fee that Chime charges you when you use an ATM outside the Chime’s ATM network.

You can write checks to pay bills via Chime’s Checkbook feature. Tell Chime the bill you need to pay and how much you’ll pay. Then, it will write and mail the check on your behalf, provided the recipient’s address is in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. The check takes three to nine business days to arrive.

A total monthly direct deposit of $200 or more qualifies you for enrollment in SpotMe, an optional feature that lets you overdraft $20 to $200 without paying an overdraft fee. Rather than penalize you for overspending your account, Chime simply uses your next deposit to cover the negative balance. Chime calculates your SpotMe limit based on your:

  • Account history
  • Direct deposits
  • Spending pattern
  • "Other risk-based factors"

Chime uses your direct deposit amount from the previous 34 days to determine whether you qualify for its overdraft protection service. You’ll start out with a $20 overdraft limit and could receive an increase as Chime reviews your account activity.

Savings Account

Chime offers a low-yield savings account option that links to your spending account and provides two automatic savings options.

For starters, you can enable Save When You Spend, a tool that rounds up purchases to the nearest dollar and transfers the extra amount to your savings account. For example, Chime would round up a $10.62 purchase to $11, then transfer 38 cents to your savings account. Those small amounts add up, especially if you make numerous transactions throughout the month.

Only those with a Chime Spending Account can open a Chime savings account.

Chime’s Save When You Get Paid feature automatically saves a pre-set percentage of your direct deposit and transfers the amount into your savings account. The automatic savings take the pressure off you and helps you build your savings effortlessly.

Otherwise, the only way to fund the account is to transfer money from your Spending Account.

Unfortunately, Chime doesn’t offer the best annual percentage yield (APY) compared with the top high-interest savings accounts. (It was 0.50% as of August 16, 2021, according to its website.) You could be getting more interest with some other high-yield savings accounts at an online bank. Depositing cash can also be a hassle, but they have 90,000 deposit locations, including Walmart, Walgreens, and 7-Eleven.

You can link your savings and spending accounts together, but in keeping with Regulation D, you’re only allowed six withdrawals. Otherwise, you could face additional fees, or your account could be reclassified as a checking account.

Credit Builder Credit Card

Chime's Credit Builder credit card is a secured card aimed at those with no or bad credit. Although it's a credit card, it functions much like a debit card. Cardholders must move money from their Spending Account into the card's account, creating the card's credit limit. The money spent on the card then gets paid off with the money moved over from the Spending Account, and Chime reports the balance to the credit bureaus as paid in full.

The Credit Builder card gives users the overspending protection of debit cards and the credit-building benefits of credit cards. Chime doesn't perform credit checks to apply for the card, and there's no minimum security deposit, annual fee, or interest.

Chime Customer Service

Chime’s mobile app was designed for banking from a smartphone. It allows you to:

  • Check your account
  • Pay bills
  • Transfer funds between accounts
  • Freeze your account after losing your card
  • Receive transaction notifications
  • Send money to friends and family who also have Chime accounts

Chime partners with the Bancorp Bank or Stride Bank, N.A., both members of the FDIC, to provide banking services. Both banks’ FDIC membership means your deposits are federally insured up to $250,000.

The customer service offering is pretty standard. Customers can send a message to customer service through the mobile app or via email ([email protected]) or by calling 844-244-6363 Monday through Sunday from 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time.

How to Bank With Chime

Opening an account with Chime is pretty easy. To get started, visit member.chime.com/enroll and provide some basic personal information.

While you can deposit money into your account via direct and mobile check deposits, Chime currently does not allow wire transfers.

The Final Verdict

Benefits

We found that Chime is a consumer-friendly option for anyone who wants free, app-focused online banking. You’ll have access to several features that make banking simple and hassle-free. Early access to your direct deposit gives you more flexibility in managing your money, with no extra fees. Automatic savings options help you boost your savings, and if you have a blemished bank record, Chime is forgiving. The banking platform doesn’t review your ChexSystems history, so this is a great option if banks have turned you down.

Drawbacks

Chime only offers two types of accounts—a spending account and a savings account—and you can’t open a standalone savings account. While the automatic savings options allow you to grow your savings account steadily over time, you'll only earn at the current APY of 0.50%. And if you’re looking for more functionality, such as the option to deposit cash, open a certificate of deposit, or apply for a loan, Chime isn’t the best choice for you.

You can discover online banking bonus set up transaction alerts to keep tabs on account activity.

  • Open an account but have a poor capital one savings account login history

What Does Chime Offer?

Chime's offerings are limited to three basic services:

Checking Account

Spending Account

Chime’s Spending Account, the equivalent of a first time direct deposit chime account, gives you access to your direct deposits as early as two days sooner than traditional banks.

Chime doesn't perform credit checks to apply for the first time direct deposit chime, and there's no minimum security deposit, annual fee, or interest.
