What are grapes?

Grapes are small, round-oval fruits that grow in bunches on vines. Depending on the variety of the grape, they may be eaten fresh, dried to make raisins, or used to make wine, jam, juice or vinegar.

The colour of the grape varieties ranges from very pale green through to dark purple. On the outside is a thin, semi-translucent skin and on the inside is soft, juicy flesh. Some grapes contain seeds, whilst others are seedless. In the UK and Europe, grapes are harvested from late August until around November, before it gets too cold.

1. Source of protective antioxidants

Grapes are a source of natural compounds including polyphenols, catechins and anthocyanins as well as providing the pigment to determine the colour of the grape, these compounds have protective antioxidant properties. Indeed, grape juice is one of the richest sources of phenolic compounds among fruits, with the most talked about being resveratrol.

2. May support heart health

Grapes provide both fibre and potassium, which are helpful in their support of heart function including blood pressure. The polyphenols in grapes including resveratrol and quercetin are also thought to benefit the cardiovascular system, protecting it from inflammatory and oxidative damage.

3. May support eye health

The antioxidant compounds in grapes, such as the resveratrol as well as two fat-soluble carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin are protective against the UV light which can damage the delicate cells of the eye. Lutein and zeaxanthin are especially useful as they appear to protect the macula of the eye from the effects of blue light from devices like mobiles and tablets.

4. May boost brain power

A small study reported that drinking 230ml of purple grape juice appeared to improve reaction time and calmness, suggesting it may help mood and speed of cognitive processing. Studies in rats has also supported the effects of compounds like resveratrol on learning, memory and mood. However, more evidence needs to be gathered before such benefits can be confirmed.

5. May help manage blood sugar

Technically, grapes are a moderate sugar food providing 15g of carbohydrates per 100g, because these are naturally occurring sugars as opposed to ‘free’ sugars, when grapes are eaten in their whole form, you don’t need to worry about cutting down on them.

Grapes also have a low glycaemic index, which is the measure of how quickly a food (when eaten on its own) raises your blood sugar levels. In addition to this some of the natural compounds in grapes, like resveratrol, appear to have a beneficial effect on blood sugar management.

Are grapes safe for everyone?

Grape allergy is considered rare but it is possible to be allergic to grapes. If you or someone else shows signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, coughing or difficulty breathing, then this is a medical emergency and requires urgent treatment.

The Myth of Grapes and Cheese

Grapes are probably the most common fruit to grace a cheese plate. They fill up space beautifully, they're easy to pluck off and eat, and all of us have probably eaten cheese and grapes together and enjoyed the experience. So why do some cheesemongers and fromagers advise against eating cheese and grapes together?

In a word: Tannins.

Tannins Are the Culprit

Tannins are naturally-occurring, astringent compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems (as well as in tea). Tannins are usually associated with wine and can play a role in whether or not a particular cheese and wine pair well together. Tannins are also in the skins of regular table grapes and can affect the flavor of the cheese you are eating.

Grapes can, in some instances, make a cheese taste bitter. This usually happens when grapes are paired with a washed rind or bloomy rind cheese. It happens less often when grapes are paired with hard cheeses.

It's easy to figure out whether or not grapes are affecting the flavor of the cheese you're eating, for better or for worse. With a fresh palate (have a drink of water first, or eat a neutral-flavored cracker) taste the cheese. After you taste the cheese alone, then start eating the grapes and cheese together. What do you think? Does the cheese taste the same, better or worse?

In some cases, grapes might not make the cheese taste bad, but they might not enhance the flavor of the cheese, either. In these cases grapes are fine, but not magical or memorable, pairing with cheese. 

Fruit and Cheese

You don't have to banish grapes, but next time you're serving cheese consider reaching for other fruits first. Figs, dates, apples, melons, and pears are usually always good choices when pairing fruit and cheese.

The safest bet is to pair cheese with dried fruit. Dried fruit is often sweeter than fresh fruit, and you don't have to worry about dried fruit ripeness or whether it is in season. Dried figs, dates, cherries, and apricots pair really well with cheese.

Fruit spreads also pair really well with cheese. Many cheese shops sell quince paste, fig jam, and peach or apricot preserves to pair with cheese.

Why Do Fruit and Cheese Pair Well Together?

The sweetness of fruit and saltiness of cheese are the main reason they pair well together. This sweet/salty contrast is also why cheese pairs well with dessert wines, honey and fruit spreads.

6 Cheeses that Pair Well With Fruit

Try any one of these cheese with fruit and be pleasantly surprised:

  1. Havarti is a smooth and buttery, near-white cheese with a soft texture. It pairs best with sweeter fruits, like pears or honey crisp apples.
  2. Edam is a close cousin to Gouda and shares its mild, buttery flavor but is slightly nuttier and has a slightly firmer texture. It balances well with sweet or tart fruit, and especially well with red grapes.
  3. Jarlsberg resembles Swiss but is nuttier and harder. It pairs best with tart apples and plums.
  4. Munster is a mild cheese that mellows with age. The orange rind is edible and the cheese itself is near-white. Grapes and sweet apples go best with Munster.
  5. Gruyere has a medium-firm texture and is creamy colored with a nutty, rich flavor. It pairs best with apples.
  6. Asiago is hard, pungent, and strong-flavored–a cross between sharp cheddar and parmesan. Pair this cheese with tart, hard apples like Granny Smiths, as well as plums and tart grapes.

Researchers from the UK discovered that Concord grape juice enhanced cognitive function in people with busy, stressful lifestyles – specifically working moms of pre-teens.[3] During this study, 40-50-year-old women participated in a series of brain-bending tasks, including a driving simulator challenge. Mom drivers that drank the grape juice for several weeks (vs. a low-polyphenol drink), were more attentive and quicker to react behind the wheel. These learnings were reinforced with a second small study, which found that drinking a daily serving of 100% grape juice made with Concord grapes (vs. a low-polyphenol drink) had an immediate, positive impact on both mood and attention in young adults (mean age of 21 years).[4]

Unlike sugary snacks however, the ‘worst’ fruits have a host of health benefits, some of which are discussed below.

Worst Fruit for Weight Loss

Bananas
Bananas are a great replacement for a pre-workout energy bar which is why you often see professional tennis players snacking on them in between games. Bananas are filled with fibre and potassium, the former helping digestive health and the latter functioning as an electrolyte. However, with 14 grams of sugar in a medium sized banana, it may not be the best option when cutting weight.

Mango
Mangos are one of the most commonly consumed fruits in the world. They are high in vitamins A and C, making them great for healthy skin and hair. They also have anti-ageing qualities and have been proven to lower the chances of breast and colon cancer. Their sugar content is very high though, reaching nearly 31g per mango. Fortunately, mangos are quite large so you can slice or share to lower your sugar intake.

Grapes
Grapes are an easy and tasty snack. Their skins contain antioxidants such as quercetin and resveratrol, both of which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart problems. These antioxidants also combat low-density lipoprotein or ‘bad’ cholesterol and are great for those looking to lose weight and lower cholesterol. One cup of grapes, however, can contain up to 15g of sugar so they are best used sparingly.

Pomegranate
Pomegranates contain many of the vitamins found in mangos and can therefore reduce the risk of heart problems. Various studies have been done into the pomegranate’s impact on physical performance. One such study, found that consumption before exercise can increase performance in athletes. But consider that one pomegranate contains up to 39g of sugar so, to get the most from the fruit, eat one prior to a workout.

Apples
Apples have a number of health benefits that make them ideal for weight loss if used in moderation. Their high fibre and water content makes them a filling fruit and popular snack. However, a medium sized apple has a surprisingly high sugar content of 19g, making it the final inclusion of the ‘worst’ fruits for weight loss.

Best Fruit for Weight Loss

Blueberries
Blueberries are known as a superfood due to the long list of health benefits associated with them. They are one of the richest fruits for antioxidants and as a result have anti-aging and anti-cancer qualities. Blueberries are also amazing for physical performance. They help dilate blood vessels, allowing oxygen to travel through the body more efficiently, and also reduce muscle fatigue after a workout.

Watermelon
While watermelons are high in sugar, it’s very unlikely you’d eat a full one due to its size. This fruit is 82% water and the benefits of being well hydrated should not be overlooked. Watermelon is great for weight loss as a result of this. As well, watermelon is a delicious, sweet snack and will satisfy cravings that may otherwise have been sated by chocolate or sweets.

Lemon
Lemons are very low in sugar but high in vitamin C. They are recommended to reduce the risk of arthritis as well as heart problems. Although eating a whole lemon would be difficult, its zest or juice can be added to almost any meal to add flavour. Lemon water is also more filling than regular water due to the lemon’s high pectin fiber content, making it great for weight loss.

Guava
Guavas are a sort of nutritional cosmopolitan in that they contain a good mix of vitamins. They are high in vitamin A in particular which promotes eye health and can improve sight. Three ounces of guava only contains around 4.5g of sugar too, meaning you can enjoy a good portion before it would negatively affect your weight loss goals. Guava also helps the body maintain its metabolic rate and is a good source of copper, a deficiency that can cause thyroid hyperfunctions. This makes the fruit a good addition for those who experience weight gain as a result of thyroid problems.

Grapefruits
Studies into grapefruit and weight loss make for interesting reading. One such experiment showed that grapefruit can significantly improve weight loss. Over a twelve week period, participants who ate three portions of fresh grapefruit per day lost 1.6kg whereas the control group, who were given placebos, lost only 0.3kg. It also contains many of the antioxidants mentioned above as well as lycopene, which is especially effective in reducing the risk of prostate cancer and the symptoms of common cancer treatments.

In conclusion, none of the fruits listed above are actually bad for you. Just because a fruit has a high sugar content doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Sugars found in fruit work differently for the body than added sugars in sweets, cakes and biscuits.

Fruit contains a molecule called fructose which drastically affects how the sugar is metabolised within the body. Because the sugar is encased in fibre, it is absorbed by the liver more slowly. Added (or processed) sugar, by contrast, is absorbed quicker than the body is naturally able to, which is why it is converted to fat.

This means you don’t have to worry too much about treating yourself to any of the ‘worst’ fruits for weight loss, as they are still great for your health and a fantastic alternative to anything containing processed sugar. But if you are keen to lose weight as quickly and efficiently as possible, focus on the ‘best’ fruits listed above.

Grape is botanically a berry, of the deciduous woody wines that belong to the flowering plant genus Vitis. Thus Syrah red wine is named after the city Shiraz, where the grapes were first used to make Shirazi wine. Grape is a non-climacteric type of fruit that can be eaten as a standalone snack or used for making wine, jam, juice, jelly, grape seed extract, grape seed oil, raisins, vinegar to mention a few. It grows in clusters of 15 to 300, anthocyanins are the chemical pigment that is responsible for varying shades of colour in grapes.

What Colour Grapes Are Healthiest?

Well, nutritionally both red and white grapes are almost similar. However, red grapes may marginally verge out the white due to the abundance of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in the skin of red grapes. The Myth of Grapes and Cheese

Grapes are probably the most common fruit to grace a cheese plate. They fill up space beautifully, they're easy to pluck off and eat, and all of us have probably eaten cheese and grapes together and enjoyed the experience. So why do some cheesemongers and fromagers advise against eating cheese and grapes together?

In a word: Tannins.

Tannins Are the Culprit

Tannins are naturally-occurring, astringent compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems (as well as in tea). Tannins are usually associated with wine and can play a role in whether or not a particular cheese and wine pair well together. Tannins are also in the are white grapes good for you of regular table grapes and can affect the flavor of the cheese you are eating.

Grapes can, in some instances, make a cheese taste bitter. This usually happens when grapes are paired with a washed rind or bloomy rind cheese. It happens less often when grapes are paired with hard cheeses.

It's easy to figure out whether or not grapes are affecting the flavor of the cheese you're eating, for better or for worse. With a fresh palate (have a drink of water first, or eat a neutral-flavored cracker) taste the cheese. After you taste the cheese alone, then start eating the grapes and cheese together. In some cases, grapes might not make the cheese taste bad, but they might not enhance the flavor of the cheese, either. In these cases grapes are fine, but not magical or memorable, pairing with cheese.

The safest bet is to pair cheese with dried fruit. Dried fruit is often sweeter than fresh fruit, and you don't have to worry about dried fruit ripeness or whether it is in season. Dried figs, dates, cherries, and apricots pair really well with cheese.

  4. Munster is a mild cheese that mellows with age. The orange rind is edible and the cheese itself is near-white. Grapes and sweet apples go best with Munster.
  5. Gruyere has a medium-firm texture and is creamy colored with a nutty, rich flavor. It pairs best with apples.
  6. Asiago is hard, pungent, and strong-flavored–a cross between sharp cheddar and parmesan. Pair this cheese with tart, hard apples like Granny Smiths, as well as plums and tart grapes.

A recent study published in the scientific journal Clinical Infectious Diseases has suggested that fresh table grapes could help in the battle against Covid-19, the California Table Grape Commission (CTGC) has highlighted.

The study found that a lack of adequate vitamin K – of which grapes are a natural source – was associated with poor outcomes in Covid-19 patients.

The researchers identified an increased need for vitamin K during a Covid-19 illness and noted that depletion or deficiency of vitamin K can have devastating consequences in the lungs.

Vitamin K, a nutrient also found in abundance in fresh grapes, plays a critical role in blood clotting including maintaining the balance of both pro- and anti-clotting factors.

Low levels of vitamin K may upset this balance resulting in a greater tendency for blood to form clots. While Covid-19 is known first as a respiratory infection, higher instances of blood clots have been observed and worsen patient outcomes.

According to the journal, vitamin K is also involved in inhibiting soft tissue calcification and elastic fibre degradation. Coronary calcification is linked to a higher risk of blood clots, and elastic fiber degradation can harm the integrity of lung tissue.

In addition, vitamin K is known for anti-inflammatory activity; decreased levels have been associated with an increase in inflammatory proteins.

Other research suggests that certain flavonoid compounds found in grapes, green tea, cacao, and dark chocolate may be beneficial against Covid-19 by inhibiting an enzyme that is involved in the infectivity of the virus.

This research used computer modeling techniques and a laboratory study to predict how certain flavonoids – specifically flavan-3-ols and proanthocyanidins – can central pa food bank facebook to a critical enzyme that contributes to the infectivity of Covid-19 and inhibit its action.

“These recent findings add to the substantial body of research built over 20 years indicating that eating fresh grapes can have significant positive effects on long-term health.”
