'Coconut water is a good source of sodium and potassium which are two key electrolytes lost through sweat during exercise. Sodium and potassium are vital for maintaining fluid balance in the body,' says Hope.

2 Coconut water is high in antioxidants

The fresher your coconut water, the higher the level of antioxidants – so try to avoid the more processed and heat pasteurised versions.

Again, it's early days. But another study conducted on rats with kidney stones found that coconut water prevented crystals from sticking to the kidneys and other parts of the urinary tract.

'There is some animal research to suggest that coconut water had beneficial effects on renal function for up to two weeks following administration,' details Hope. 'Although the research was conducted on a very small group of rats and therefore we cannot conclude the same results for humans.'

Allergies

Coconut is not a tree nut, and most people who are allergic to tree nuts can still consume coconut. Still, there are some cases of coconut allergy. If you are allergic to coconuts, you need to avoid coconut water, coconut milk, and other products made with coconut in addition to the coconut flesh itself.

Adverse Effects

Although potassium is an essential mineral, consuming too much of it can lead to hyperkalemia (an overabundance of potassium in the blood). Since coconut water contains potassium, drinking large quantities could cause this issue. This is unlikely to happen for most people, but those who have chronic kidney disease or take medications, including ACE inhibitors, should be cautious.

This brand tastes super sweet and somewhat artificial, which sounds about right given its production process. Definitely not ideal.

Naked uses mature coconuts (instead of the more nutritious water from a young coconut) while also heat-pasteurizing their product, a big no-no if you’re trying to maintain the nutrients in the water. This coconut water had very sour notes and left a bad aftertaste. Next.

With Zico you have to pay close attention because they sell two different coconut waters depending on which packaging you buy. The water in the plastic bottles are made from concentrate, but the boxed cartons contain only water from Thai coconuts. This boxed variety is not made from concentrate, and contain no additives.

However, both versions of this company’s water underwent ultra high temperature pasteurization, killing anything nutritious and basically leaving this product as healthy as sugar water. Additionally, Zico tastes a little bit metallic and sour. Yum…

2. Taste Nirvana

Taste Nirvana uses a “steam sterilization” process which is a combination of heat and pressurized pasteurization. There are no concentrates or additives in this brand, and their coconuts are sustainably grown and organic, even though this is not labeled on the bottle. Props for modesty.

This coconut water is great and for some reason tastes a little reminiscent of chocolate milk, but I’m definitely not complaining. This coconut water comes in two varieties, with and without fresh coconut pulp.

Ask an alternative health practitioner about the health benefits of coconut oil and then be prepared for a long list. The list will likely focus on coconut oil having anti-cancer, anti-dementia, antibiotic, antiviral, and other properties. However, there is little to no clinical research to date to back up most of these claims.

One area where firmer conclusions can be made about coconut oil is in the area of cardiovascular health. Although coconut oil is classified as saturated fat, it is high in lauric acid, which is thought to have a beneficial effect on HDL cholesterol that's the good one.

What is also known is that healthy fats, such as coconut oil, aid in the absorption of vitamins and minerals. A small study using mice as subjects found some evidence that coconut oil was effective in repairing cells and increasing antioxidants following the experience of stress.

Uses

Coconut oil is a good choice for sàute dishes due to its high smoke point. This means that it is preferable to other oils when cooking at a higher heat to avoid the unpleasant flavor (and health risks) associated with the point that the oil starts to smoke. In addition to using coconut oil for sàuteing, you can add it to:

Coconut water is basically nature's Gatorade.

It's a great way to rehydrate after a stomach bug, night out, or tough gym session, thanks to the electrolytes it contains, including manganese, potassium, and sodium, says Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN, dietitian, and author of Read It Before You Eat It.

Naturally low in calories and sugar (somewhere around 60 calories and 10 grams of sugar per serving), coconut water is overall pretty healthy—that is, as long as you choose the right bottle.

"Sugar is sugar," says Shana Minei Spence, RDN, of The Nutrition Tea. "It all digests in our body the same and our body can't tell the difference."

While people are inclined to purchase "healthy" sounding sugars—think agave, honey, and maple syrup—Spence points out there are only slight differences in their glycemic index (GI) numbers, which is assigned to foods depending on how they affect blood sugar. As an example, she says three common sweeteners—maple syrup, honey, and coconut sugar— all rank at approximately 52 on the GI scale.

"People are drawn to wellness names like 'natural' but these are more marketing terms," Spence says

This boils down to one major takeaway, no matter the item: read labels, Taub-Dix says, adding that some coconut waters "contain added sugar and other ingredients you might want to avoid."

Considering that a major study published in JAMA Internal Medicine recently linked high added sugar intake with an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, limiting the stuff isn't a bad idea. In addition to checking for added sugar, make sure you're also cognizant of serving sizes, adds Taub-Dix. Many bottles contain multiple servings, so you'll quickly rack up the calories and sugar if you guzzle the whole thing.

It's a great way to rehydrate after a stomach bug, night out, or tough gym session, thanks to the electrolytes it contains, including manganese, potassium, and sodium, says Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN, dietitian, and author of Read It Before You Is coconut water from concentrate good for you It.

"Sugar is sugar," says Shana Minei Spence, RDN, of The Nutrition Tea. "It all digests in our body the same and our body can't tell the difference."

While people are inclined to purchase "healthy" sounding sugars—think agave, honey, and maple syrup—Spence points out there are only slight differences in their glycemic index (GI) numbers, which is assigned to foods depending on how they affect blood sugar. As an example, she says three common sweeteners—maple syrup, honey, and coconut sugar— all rank at approximately 52 on the GI scale.

"People are drawn to wellness names like 'natural' but these are more marketing terms," Spence says

The water in the plastic bottles are made from concentrate, but the boxed cartons contain only water from Thai coconuts. This boxed variety is not made from concentrate, and contain no additives.

However, both versions of this company’s water underwent ultra high temperature pasteurization, killing anything nutritious and basically leaving this product as healthy as sugar water. Additionally, Zico tastes a little bit metallic and sour. Yum…

Taste Nirvana uses a “steam sterilization” process which is a combination of heat and pressurized pasteurization. There are no concentrates or additives in this brand, and their coconuts are sustainably grown and organic, even though this is not labeled on the bottle. Props for modesty.

This coconut water is great and for some reason tastes a little reminiscent of is coconut water from concentrate good for you milk, but I’m definitely not complaining. This coconut water is coconut water from concentrate good for you in two varieties, with and without fresh coconut pulp.
