1. Get Your Child to Gargle

Perhaps the most common and simple method to provide relief from cough is gargling with warm water. It’s best to gargle at least thrice a day. You can also add a teaspoon of salt to the water.

2. Give Honey

Honey has antimicrobial agents that fight cold. The sweet taste of honey enhances saliva production, which in turn helps in thinning the mucus. Honey is helpful in relieving cough because of its various antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties too. Due to its viscous nature, it soothes the throat. An ideal way to administer honey is to mix a tablespoon of it in a glass of warm water and squeeze some fresh lemon juice into it.

However, avoid giving honey to infants below the age of one.

Hydration

A dry throat can make your cough worse. Try to remember to sip on soothing fluid, like tea or water with lemon.

Steam Inhalation

To make marjoram tea, steep 3 to 4 teaspoons of dried marjoram in 8 ounces of hot water and sip three times daily.

Marjoram is generally considered safe but it may slow blood clotting and increase the risk of bruising and nosebleeds in people who are taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drugs.

Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains a compound called curcumin that has been said to have mild antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to treat mild arthritis and respiratory disease. Most of these claims are not supported by research, however.

Some researchers have suggested that turmeric taken orally may ease cough and other symptoms of asthma. It hasn't been shown to help treat an acute cough.

With that said, turmeric tea can be found in many grocery stores and is generally well tolerated. Tumeric capsules are another matter, with the overuse of the supplement likely to cause stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea.

Ginger

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has long been used to treat nausea and upset stomach, but there is evidence that it can also suppress the cough reflex by relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways.

A 2013 review of studies from Columbia University reported that gingerol, a chemical compound in fresh ginger, is able to suppress airway hyperresponsiveness that can trigger symptoms of asthma—including cough. It can have this effect when it's taken orally (such as with tea or by sucking on candied ginger), and also when it is inhaled in steam.

It is important to avoid consuming too much ginger, however, as it may cause stomach upset, heartburn, or diarrhea.

Garlic

Garlic (Allium sativum) has mild antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Taking garlic on a regular basis is also said to lower blood pressure and boost the immune system.

Garlic is purported to relieve cough associated with the common cold, although most studies investigating the effect have been mixed. A 2014 review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews could find no benefit in using garlic to prevent or treat cold or cold symptoms in any of the eight reviewed studies.

With that said, garlic is generally considered safe.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root, as per its name, is the root of the marshmallow plant (Althea officinalis), a type of flowering hollyhock.

Marshmallow root has been used since ancient times to relieve sore throats, often as a sweetened, meringue-like confection. Its slightly gooey consistency can coat sore and irritated throats, while flavonoids in the root are said to relieve inflammation.

A 2018 study in Complementary Medicine Research reported that syrups and lozenges made with marshmallow root extract helped relieve mild dry cough, usually within 10 minutes.

Marshmallow root tea can be purchased online and in some specialty health food stores. It is generally considered safe, although little research has been conducted to assess its long-term safety. The plant may interfere with blood clotting and affect blood sugar.

Thyme

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) has been used medicinally since the Black Plague in Europe. It contains a compound called thymol that is believed to have antispasmodic effects that can help relax the smooth muscles of the throat.

When consumed as a tea, thyme is likely safe for occasional use. You can make a thyme tea by infusing 3 to 4 teaspoons of the dried herb in 8 ounces of boiling water. Sweeten with honey for an added cough-relieving benefit.

Thyme essential oil, typically used in aromatherapy, should not be taken internally as it can cause a potentially serious drop in blood pressure.

Thousands of children are seen unnecessarily in the ER every year due to a cough. Why? Because coughing is confusing! There are so many illnesses with ‘cough’ listed as a symptom and a dry cough can linger for weeks after other symptoms have gone away (it is considered a persistent or chronic cough after three weeks). So it’s only natural that we are scratching our heads, wondering when to be worried. Let’s dive into this a bit and figure out when to be concerned and how to soothe ourselves and our loves with some home remedies for a cough.

What illnesses cause kids and teens to cough?

As stated above, there are many illnesses that cause our kids (or us) to cough:

  • The common cold
  • Influenza (Get your vaccines!)
  • Pneumonia (Get your vaccines!)
  • Whooping cough (Get your vaccines!)
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Bronchitis
  • Postnasal drip
  • Sinusitis
  • GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)

The biggest takeaway here is that coughs are hopping on board with everything else we may be suffering from. Coughing itself is actually not all bad – it’s our body’s way of protecting us, clearing irritants and secretions from our lungs. And honestly, it’s less often from the force of the cough but from excess mucus that our body needs to get rid of.

Cough remedies for kids and teens:

  • Fluids! Drink TONS of water. Often times, we cough because of a runny nose and it is draining in the back of the throat. The more we drink, the thinner the drainage becomes and it is easier to get it out! Water, tea, broth – any of these are great for hydration and comforting when sick!
  • Saline rinses or flushes. Sometimes the mucus is so thick we need to thin it out with saline. Again, drink water to help thin it out as well!
  • Cool-Mist Humidifier. This will help moisten the dry air and can help decrease coughing from a dry, scratchy throat. The warm-mist humidifiers increase the risk of a burn, either from the hot steam or from a water spill. It is not proven to be more effective than the cool-mist humidifiers because the heat dissipates too quickly to actually make a difference by the time you are breathing it in. There’s also no reason to add anything to the water, such as essential oils.
  • Cold or frozen food/drinks. A good popsicle always soothes a sore throat and lifts a sick kid’s spirit. Bonus? It also helps with hydration!
  • Salt water gargle. Typically our kids will cooperate with this by the time they are 6 years or older. This can help soothe a sore throat from coughing.
  • Hard candy has been shown to be just as effective as a cough drop. Choking hazard here so use your best judgement!
  • Spoonful of honey. This can soothe a sore throat and loosen a cough.
  • Elevate the head of the bed. Ever notice worse coughing at night? We’ve tucked in for the night and suddenly it’s like a river down the back of our throats and we can’t stop coughing. Clean out a child’s (or your own) nose the best you can and prop up the head.
  • Tylenol or Ibuprofen. These are to help the discomfort, not to cure the cough. It’s really not needed unless you feel your child is in pain from the cough or their temperature is >102 degrees.
  • Cough suppressants or expectorants should be avoided for kids <6 years old; consider avoiding for kids under 12 years of age as well. It is not proven to be effective and the side effects for children are not worth the risk. It’s efficacy is even questionable in adults.
  • Some might feel the need to give Benadryl to help suppress the cough and get some sleep but this is also not recommended. Let our bodies cough out the illness and move on!

When to worry about a cough?

  • If the cough is lingering around longer than3 weeks, make an appointment with your doctor to see if something else is going on.
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing. Don’t waste time making an appointment here –  head to the ER.
  • Wheezing cough. If the wheezing is severe and leads to difficulty breathing, head to the ER. If during office hours, you hear a slight wheeze but you or your child is otherwise uncompromised, it is okay to call your doctor and go from there.
  • Coughing up phlegm or mucus (especially yellow or green mucus), or pink/bloody phlegm. This is usually a sign that an infection is brewing and time to make an appointment with the doc.
  • Vomiting blood. Vomiting with coughing can be normal. If you see blood, we’ve crossed the line into ‘abnormal’ and it warrants a trip to the ER.
  • Fever >102. Always ask your doctor for specific temperature guidelines, they can vary slightly depending on their preferences.
  • Signs of dehydration. Dry mouth, dry skin, decreased urination. Do your best to keep hydrated on your own, but if it doesn’t seem to be working, see your doctor.
  • Nothing is working. If you’re doing everything you can at home to make your babe more comfortable but it isn’t working – or they seem to be getting worse – call the pediatrician.

At the end of the day, follow your gut. You are ALWAYS the expert on yourself and your own child and you are the advocate! Coughing is an aggravating symptom to deal with day after day, so hang in there, Mama. Do your part to increase comfort where you can and slowly but surely, things should improve. And as you battle this illness, remind everyone to wash their hands! Everyone in the family! You can’t wash too much. Also, direct the cough and sneeze into a kleenex or into a sleeve. And grab some disinfectant to get those germs out of the house so you can move on before the next thing strikes!

3. Wheezing Cough

4. Croup Cough

Also known as barky cough, croup cough is caused by a viral infection which blocks the upper respiratory tract, resulting in a barking sound.

5. Whooping Cough

Here are a few natural remedies for cough in children:

1. Get Your Child to Gargle

Perhaps the most common and simple method to provide relief from cough is gargling with warm water. It’s best to gargle at least thrice a day. You can also add a teaspoon of salt to the water.

2. Give Honey

Honey has antimicrobial agents that fight cold. The sweet taste of honey enhances saliva production, which in turn helps in thinning the mucus. Honey is helpful in relieving cough because of its various antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties too. Due to its viscous nature, it soothes the throat. An ideal way to administer honey is to mix a tablespoon of it in a glass of warm water and squeeze some fresh lemon juice into it.

However, avoid giving honey to infants below the age of one.

3. Give Ginger

Ginger is an excellent home remedy for cough as it is known to have antiviral properties. Although lozenges contain ginger, it’s best to administer ginger directly. Add honey to counteract the strong taste of ginger.

Give two tablespoons of the following mixture to get relief from cough:

  • Mix ¼ teaspoon of crushed or grated ginger with the same quantity of cayenne pepper.
  • Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and honey to this and add two tablespoons of water to make a syrup.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Known for its antibacterial properties, apple cider vinegar is an effective home remedy for dry cough in children. Apple cider vinegar can be mixed with crushed ginger to cure cough. Also, you can make your child take in the smell of vinegar as it is known to soothe a sore throat.

There’s a connection between the use of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar and food poisoning. Food poisoning in children is especially dangerous since their immune system is just developing. To limit risk, purchase only pasteurized apple cider vinegar.

5. Make Her Suck on a Lemon

Lemon boosts immunity as it has therapeutic properties. Like ginger, it’s used in lozenges that soothe a sore throat. Honey with lemon juice makes an ideal cough syrup.

6. Make Her Inhale Steam

Steam therapy is a good option, especially if your child has a blocked nose, accompanied by a wet cough. The warmth of steam will thin the mucus and make it flow out easily. You can administer steam in either of the following ways:

  • Boil water in a bowl or a tub and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to it. Allow your child to inhale the steam.
  • Run hot water in the restroom. This will fill the room with steam.

7. Ensure She Gets Ample Rest

Adequate rest will help your child recover faster. The stress of attending school can slow down healing. Besides, staying at home will prevent your child’s classmates from contracting flu.

8. Use a Humidifier

When the weather is dry, it can create mucus in the throat, leading to irritation and dry cough. A humidifier helps to expel the mucus and provides relief from wet cough. Be sure to keep the humidifier clean to prevent mineral buildup and the growth of bacteria and moulds. Emptying the tank and drying all surfaces of the humidifier daily is one way to safely keep it clean.

9. Chicken Soup

Chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties that provide relief from sore throat, cough and congestion.

10. Turmeric Milk

An age-old home remedy for instant relief from sore throat and cough – turmeric milk! Turmeric has antiseptic properties which can effectively treat a viral infection. Just add a teaspoon of turmeric to warm milk and give it to your child every night before bed.

11. Administer Cough Drops

Cough drops give temporary relief to a sore and scratchy throat. However, cough drops should not be administered to children under the age of three.

12. Use a Suction Bulb

You can also use a suction bulb to clear the mucus from your child’s nose. All you need to do is squeeze the bulb, put it into her nostril and release gently. You can repeat this after 2-3 hours. This remedy works wonders for 6-month old babies.

13. Administer Warm Saline Water or Saline Drops

Saline water drops is a tried-and-tested home remedy for easing dry cough in children. For best results, follow these steps:

  • Add ½ teaspoon of salt to warm water and put two drops of the solution in your child’s nostrils. Ask your child to blow her nose immediately to remove the mucus.

15. Make Her Suck on a Popsicle

Sucking on a popsicle is a good way to relieve a scratchy throat. Give your child a sugar-free candy, popsicle or crushed ice to suck on if she is above the age of four.

16. Keep Your Child Hydrated

Giving fluids will ensure that toxins are flushed out from her body quickly. Fluids also thin the mucus.

17. Keep Her Head in an Upright Position

Keeping your child’s head in an upright position will assist breathing through a blocked nose. Place a pillow or two under her head so that it’s higher than the rest of her body. This will reduce the accumulation of mucus in the throat and prevent coughing fits, especially during sleep.

18. Make Her Blow Her Nose

Another simple way to clear mucus from the nostrils is to blow it out. Blowing the nose from time to time will ensure that the accumulated mucus in the nostrils is removed. However, blowing the nose too frequently or too forcefully could lead to swollen or bleeding nostrils. Hence, you should make your child do it carefully and only when necessary.

19. Focus on Hygiene

Coughing spreads viruses, hence it’s important to keep the surroundings clean. The best way to do this is to wash and change the bed linen, handkerchiefs, towels, etc. frequently. Get your child to wash her hands or use a hand sanitiser before eating food.

20. Aloe Vera

Amongst many other advantages, aloe vera also helps soothe a cough. Give a teaspoon of aloe vera juice combined with honey and clove powder twice a day to your child for best results.

21. Carom Seeds

Carom seeds have antibacterial properties, which can cure a cough and relieve congestion. Boil them in water with basil leaves, ginger powder, cloves, turmeric powder, and ground pepper powder. Let the mixture cool down and give it to your child.

22. Make Use of Red Onion Juice

One teaspoon of Allium cepa or red onion juice mixed with honey is good for treating sinuses, cold, allergies and coughing fit.

23. Herbal Decoction

Herbal decoction given in small doses can be very useful in treating cough. Here is  how you can prepare a herbal decoction:

  • Mix one spoon of cumin seeds, sweet flag and cilantro to one cup of boiling water.
  • Simmer the liquid for 20 minutes and then strain it.
  • Allow it to cool and give one teaspoon of the decoction post meals to help ease a cough.

24. Almonds With Orange Juice

Almonds are known to help ease out bronchial problems which include a cough. Blend a few teaspoons of ground almond with orange juice and give it to your child for relief from a cough.

25. Other Simple Techniques

  • A slice of lemon with salt and pepper sprinkled on it when sucked can give relief from a cough.
  • A mixture of honey with white pepper can also tone down the effect of a cough for your child.

26. Expose Her to Cool Air

It’s popularly believed that if a child is suffering from cough, exposing her to cold air can work wonders. If it’s winter, bundle up your little one and take her out for a walk. This way, your child will get a breath of fresh air and also some exercise. If doing this isn’t possible, open the refrigerator door and make your child inhale the cold air. This can help a coughing fit.

Diet to Prevent Cough in Children

Prevention is better than cure. While there are many home remedies to cure a cough, it’s better to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Include these foods in your child’s diet to keep her healthy when the seasons change:

    • Foods that contain vitamins A and B build immunity against flu and cough.
    • Green leafy vegetables such as spinach strengthen your child’s immune system.
    • Root vegetables such as garlic and ginger improve the immune system.
    • Hot milk with honey shields your little one from bacteria and viruses.
    • Avoid giving your child junk or spicy, oily and unhealthy food.
    • If your kid is prone to coughing, avoid food with high salt and sugar content as they increase mucus formation in the body.
    • Healthy items such as whole wheat porridge, vegetable khichdi, buttermilk soup (kadhi), broccoli soup, beetroot soup, etc. are good for your kid.
    • Warm pineapple juice mixed with honey prevents mucus formation.

Use these home remedies and provide a healthy diet coupled with a clean environment. Don’t smoke in the vicinity of your child, especially if she’s suffering from a cough. Keep her away from dusty and polluted areas. Ensure she washes her hands regularly, and more importantly, before consuming food.

While most of these remedies do not have side effects, some of them may not suit your child. If the cough shows no signs of going away, visit a paediatrician without further delay.

Remedies for Dry Cough

There are many treatments for a dry cough, including home remedies and medications. Common causes of a dry cough include allergies, asthma, an infection, and acid reflux. And your treatment often depends on the cause and whether your cough is recurrent or new.

Home Remedies and Lifestyle

If your dry cough is mild and uncomplicated, without fever, chest pain, or any other concerning symptoms, it may be reasonable to treat it with a home remedy.

Hydration

A dry throat can make your cough worse. Try to remember to sip on soothing fluid, like tea or water with lemon.

Steam Inhalation

Breathing in steam is a home remedy that most people are familiar with. Warm steam can help moisturize dry and irritated nasal passages, ease throat pain, and reduce the severity of a cough caused by mild infection or allergy.

Some natural additives like holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) may be added to steam for treating coughs caused by cold, flu, bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and allergies.

As you breathe in the steam, drape a towel over your head to take in more moisture. Don't place your face directly over a pot of boiling water, as it may cause a severe burn.

Gargling

Gargling with saltwater is something that healthcare providers will often recommend to ease a sore throat caused by the common cold. Saltwater draws moisture away from the area of soreness to help reduce swelling and irritation.

According to a 2019 randomized controlled study in Scientific Reports, gargling three times a day with saltwater reduced the duration of cough caused by a cold by 2.4 days and vocal hoarseness by 1.7 days.

Diet

You can develop a cough as a reaction to food allergies. If you notice that certain foods make you cough, don't eat them. Consider keeping a food diary to figure out if anything you are eating is triggering your cough.

Sometimes certain conditions can make you more prone to a cough:

  • If you are prone to respiratory allergy symptoms, avoiding certain foods that are high in histamines can help relieve your symptoms, including your cough. These include alcohol, pickled foods, matured cheese, shellfish, smoked meat, chocolate, dried fruit, and strawberries.
  • Acid reflux can also cause a chronic cough. If you have acid reflux, avoid high-fat foods, acidic foods (including tomatoes), chocolate, caffeine, and spicy foods, all of which can worsen your symptoms.

Environment

There are several things you can do at home to help keep your surroundings from triggering or exacerbating your cough.

  • Use a cool-mist humidifier if your coughing tends to develop in dry weather, especially at night.
  • Get an air purifier to help clear allergens and irritants from the air, including dust, dander, and pollen. This can be helpful if you have asthma.
  • Do not smoke. Exposure to smoke from cigarettes, vaping, and marijuana increases throat irritation.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Therapies

OTC therapies can often help alleviate your cough, especially as you are getting over a cold.
Often, using cough drops is enough to make you feel better, especially if you also have a sore throat. You can add a mentholated product like Vicks Vapo-Rub to your steam inhalation, and it can provide additional relief.

Dextromethorphan is an OTC medication that's often used for treating a dry cough.

You can use a generic version, and commonly used brands include:

Keep in mind that many OTC cough medicines are also decongestants, and you might not need that effect if you have a dry cough.

You can call your healthcare provider's office to describe your symptoms and see what they recommend, and sometimes you can also get advice about OTC medications from your pharmacist.

How to Choose the Best OTC Cough Medication for You

Prescriptions

A dry cough can be caused by any number of things, including allergies, environmental irritants, infections, and even certain drugs (like ACE inhibitors).

A chronic cough may be an early sign of a potentially serious health condition, ranging from sleep apnea and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) to mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Never ignore a dry cough that is persistent, no matter how mild it might be. Your healthcare provider will diagnose the problem and may need to prescribe treatment based on the cause of your cough.

  • Seasonal allergies: If you have severe seasonal hay fever, you may benefit from taking a daily oral antihistamine to prevent allergies when pollen and mold counts begin to climb.
  • Asthma: If your cough is asthma-related, adherence to your asthma medications (including long-acting bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids) can reduce the incidence of attacks.
  • Infection: If you have an infection, such as pneumonia, you may need treatment with antibiotics.
  • Acid reflux: Your healthcare provider may prescribe an acid blocker if your cough is associated with acid reflux.

See your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following:

  • Persistent or worsening cough
  • A productive cough with phlegm and mucus
  • Coughing up pinkish sputum or blood
  • Coughing with chest pain or pressure
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Coughing that keeps you up at night
  • Coughing that causes vocal hoarseness

Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if any of the medications you take may be causing your cough. In addition to ACE inhibitors, Zocor (simvastatin), Coreg (carvedilol), Actonel (risedronate), and fluticasone nasal sprays can all cause coughing.

In some cases, reducing the dosage or changing medications may be all that's needed to overcome this common side effect.

The Most Likely Reasons for a Cough

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Many CAM therapies for easing the symptoms of a dry cough have been passed down from one generation to the next. Despite claims of effectiveness, there is often little more than anecdotal evidence to support their use.

Raw Honey

Raw honey is one of the oldest home remedies used to treat any type of cough. It coats the throat and may have natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease throat irritation. Its possible antimicrobial effects can also potentially temper minor bacterial or viral infections.

A 2018 review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews concluded that honey was as effective as diphenhydramine (used in Benadryl) but not as effective as dextromethorphan (used in products like Delsym Cough) for treating a cough in children.

Honey is well tolerated and generally welcome by younger children. However, it should never be given to babies under 1 year of age due to the risk of botulism. Honey also affects blood sugar, so other options may be better if you need to be careful about managing your glucose levels.

Can a Spoonful of Honey Cure Your Cough?

Licorice Root

Sipping tea made from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has long been touted for its soothing effect on the throat. Referred to as gancao in traditional Chinese medicine, licorice root has been used since 2100 B.C. and is said to alleviate pain, clear phlegm, and ease cough.

Licorice root tea can be found in many grocery and health food stores. Dried licorice root can be purchased online and used to make tea by steeping 2 tablespoons of the shaved root in 8 ounces of boiling water for five to 10 minutes.

Though licorice root tea is generally considered safe, prolonged use may cause severe increases in blood pressure and lead to menstrual irregularity, fatigue, headaches, water retention, and erectile dysfunction.

Marjoram

Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is a type of oregano that has long been used in traditional medicine to relieve a wide range of health conditions. It has been said to contain anti-inflammatory, plant-based compounds (phytochemicals) that may help ease cough associated with asthma, bronchitis, colds, and pertussis (whooping cough).

To make marjoram tea, steep 3 to 4 teaspoons of dried marjoram in 8 ounces of hot water and sip three times daily.

Marjoram is generally considered safe but it may slow blood clotting and increase the risk of bruising and nosebleeds in people who are taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drugs.

Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains a compound called curcumin that has been said to have mild antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to treat mild arthritis and respiratory disease. Most of these claims are not supported by research, however.

Some researchers have suggested that turmeric taken orally may ease cough and other symptoms of asthma. It hasn't been shown to help treat an acute cough.

With that said, turmeric tea can be found in many grocery stores and is generally well tolerated. Tumeric capsules are another matter, with the overuse of the supplement likely to cause stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea.

Ginger

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has long been used to treat nausea and upset stomach, but there is evidence that it can also suppress the cough reflex by relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways.

A 2013 review of studies from Columbia University reported that gingerol, a chemical compound in fresh ginger, is able to suppress airway hyperresponsiveness that can trigger symptoms of asthma—including cough. It can have this effect when it's taken orally (such as with tea or by sucking on candied ginger), and also when it is inhaled in steam.

It is important to avoid consuming too much ginger, however, as it may cause stomach upset, heartburn, or diarrhea.

Garlic

Garlic (Allium sativum) has mild antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Taking garlic on a regular basis is also said to lower blood pressure and boost the immune system.

Garlic is purported to relieve cough associated with the common cold, although most studies investigating the effect have been mixed. A 2014 review in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews could find no benefit in using garlic to prevent or treat cold or cold symptoms in any of the eight reviewed studies.

With that said, garlic is generally considered safe.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root, as per its name, is the root of the marshmallow plant (Althea officinalis), a type of flowering hollyhock.

Marshmallow root has been used since ancient times to relieve sore throats, often as a sweetened, meringue-like confection. Its slightly gooey consistency can coat sore and irritated throats, while flavonoids in the root are said to relieve inflammation.

A 2018 study in Complementary Medicine Research reported that syrups and lozenges made with marshmallow root extract helped relieve mild dry cough, usually within 10 minutes.

Marshmallow root tea can be purchased online and in some specialty health food stores. It is generally considered safe, although little research has been conducted to assess its long-term safety. The plant may interfere with blood clotting and affect blood sugar.

Thyme

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) has been used medicinally since the Black Plague in Europe. It contains a compound called thymol that is believed to have antispasmodic effects that can help relax the smooth muscles of the throat.

When consumed as a tea, thyme is likely safe for occasional use. You can make a thyme tea by infusing 3 to 4 teaspoons of the dried herb in 8 ounces of boiling water. Sweeten with honey for an added cough-relieving benefit.

Thyme essential oil, typically used in aromatherapy, should not be taken internally as it can cause a potentially serious drop in blood pressure.

Are essential oils safe to treat asthma?

They should not be used to delay the diagnosis or treatment of moderate to severe coughs or coughs that simply won't go away.
