Jose Ramirez came into Arlington, Texas and ruined Maurice Hooker’s homecoming.

In what will surely be a candidate for fight of the year, after a bout filled with back-and-forth action, Ramirez ended Hooker in the 7th round. He walked away as the unified super lightweight champion of the WBO and WBC titles and with his undefeated record intact.

The entire fight was a contrast of styles. Whoever imposed their style, largely through distance, controlled the fight. When Hooker used his long jab and fought in the middle of the ring, he looked calm while Ramirez bounced on his feet, as if bidding his time to attack. When Ramirez did attack and forced his way into Hooker’s body, he pushed him back into the ropes and negated his opponent’s natural advantages. There, against the ropes and smothered, Hooker looked helpless.

Throughout each round, just as it appeared either Hooker or Ramirez were beginning to gain control of the fight and establish their style, the other would answer. After the second round, Vince Parra, Hooker’s trainer, implored his fighter to remain calm. “Back to the jab,” he told him. At the end of the third round, it was Robert Garcia, Ramirez’s trainer, who told his fighter to not relent. “Don’t respect him!” Garcia screamed.

After several rounds that were difficult to score, the ending came suddenly. In the sixth round, Ramirez—not long after he looked momentarily stunned by one of Hooker’s shots—connected with a left hook that forced Hooker to stumble back into the ropes. Not giving Hooker any time to recover, Ramirez pounced. About nine unanswered punched from Ramirez snapped back Hooker’s head. It was sudden. And Hooker appeared to be only held up by the ropes at his back and Ramirez’s punches not allowing him to fall forward.

When the referee stepped in to hug Hooker against the ropes and wave off the fight, Ramirez celebrated by climbing his red corner. Ramirez’s cornermen hugged at his feet while not even ten feet away, Hooker struggled to keep his.

Ramirez won. At the time of the stoppage, he was leading on two scorecards while the other saw it even. Hooker lost. In front of friends and family, while Ramirez celebrated Hooker was left holding back tears and bleeding from his mouth and nose.

He can be heard weekly as co-host of "The Fight Guys" podcast on the SB Nation Radio Network.

Kahn is intimately familiar with these boxers: He nailed each of their previous fights with uncanny prescience. Before Ramirez faced challenger Jose Zepeda in February, Kahn told readers to back Ramirez in a fight that would go the distance. The result? Ramirez won a brutal 12-round decision.

When Hooker fought unbeaten Alex Saucedo last November, Kahn told readers that while Saucedo "possessed power, once Hooker settled in and got his timing down, he would start to hit Saucedo at will." That's exactly what happened as Hooker stopped Saucedo with a seventh-round TKO.

Anyone who has followed Kahn's picks is WAY up.

Maurice Hooker v Jose Ramirez: Press conference announcement round-up

RINGSIDE

📷 Jose Gonzalez

Maurice Hooker and Jose Ramirez came face-to-face for the first time at the first press conference for their World Super-Lightweight unification blockbuster on Saturday July 27 at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

WBO champ Hooker (26-0-3 17 KOs) and WBC ruler Ramirez (24-0 16 KOs) will headline a huge night of action in Texas, with more World title action to be added along with top Heavyweight fights, and tickets go on pre-sale next Wednesday and general sale next Friday.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Maurice Hooker, WBO World Super-Lightweight champion: I want to thank Eddie Hearn, RocNation, Matchroom Boxing USA, DAZN, Jose Ramirez, his team and Top Rank for getting this show done. July 27 is going to be a hell of a fight, you are going to see the best of me, the best of Jose Ramirez, may the best man win.

“I’m training hard and pushing myself, I’m doing this for my family, so let’s do this man – I want to show everyone what I am all about, it’s going to be a hell of a fight and I am not leaving without that WBC belt. Did you bring it? OK, you’ll bring my belt on July 27! It’s a great fight so let’s do it man.”

Jose Ramirez, WBC World Super-Lightweight champion: “I want to thank Bob Arum, Rick Mirigian, Robert Garcia and all the Top Rank family for the opportunity to come to his territory and a different network with Eddie Hearn and DAZN to showcase my skills in my first unification match. Ever since I came out of the London 2012 Olympics my goal was to become a World champion, and after I became a World champion my goal was to become the undisputed champion and I think Maurice Hooker is a big step to make that possible.

“He’s a great champion, I’m very honored to be here and fighting in a different venue in Arlington Texas, I know that there are a lot of fans here that love and support boxing and this is the type of fight that every champion should step up and give to the fans that deserve to see it. I feel Boxing is more alive now than ever and I’m happy I’m here as a World champion and I am going to do everything I can to stay a World champion.

“I am fighting for my family and the right causes, to do something bigger than just box. When I box my goal is to motivate people to fight for themselves, to push themselves and be better, and this is the type of fight that is going to make me better and take my career to a whole different level. It’s a blessing for me to have this fight, I’m thankful to Mo’s team for accepting the fight and stepping up to the plate, I think it’s something that was just us fighters want to prove ourselves, that’s how our promoters were able to work together to provide us with a life-changing opportunity. You will see the best of me on July 27.”

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing USA: This is a huge fight for the 140lbs division, it’s an absolute A-star match up, one both teams wanted for a long time, and after a crazy night on DAZN last Saturday at Madison Square Garden, I believe we have a fight of the year contender here in Arlington on July 27.

“I want to thank Top Rank and their fighter Jose Ramirez. The problem these days in boxing is that there is too much politics with different promoters and different networks, but when two fighters want to fight, generally you have a great chance to make it happen. So, I want to thank Bob Arum and all the Top Rank team for making this incredible fight a reality on DAZN.

“We wouldn’t be working with Mo without the help and support of RocNation Sports and Dino Duva. When we came to America, we were looking to partner up with several people that we trusted and believed in, and the relationship with Matchroom Boxing USA, Mo and RocNation Sports has been fantastic so far. We got off to a slow start really when we lost a purse bid to fight Alex Saucedo. We went to Oklahoma to fight him and it was one of the great, great nights as Mo stopped him to defend his title. He defended it again in Turning Stone but now this really is the defining night of Mo’s career.

“When we went to Oklahoma, I walked into the dressing room and it was just the guys you see on stage. I thought, ‘Oh, it’s not a very big team!’ It was our first fight with Mo and that night showed me that sometimes you don’t need a massive team, you need the right team. The right backing from genuine people that have your best interests at heart. The team lives and breathes Maurice Hooker.

“Behind every great fighter is a great trainer and it’s not just a great match-up in the ring but also out of it, with two great trainers in Vince and Robert Garcia. Robert has long been one of the top trainers in the sport and he knows how difficult this fight is, and he will be putting together a gameplan for his charge. Vince Parra has been so influential in the career development of Mo and it’s a massive night for him too.

“Seeing these guys today and looking in their eyes, this is a fight they wanted and one they are excited by. Mo has a spring in his step, he’s got this monster fight in his hometown. His opponent Jose Ramirez is a hugely popular fighter, I’ve been to some of his shows in Fresno, I want to thank his manager Rick Mirigian who has done a great job in building him locally there. He’s popular, entertaining, technically a great fighter, a puncher and he has plenty of heart. I wanted to bring a fight to Dallas for Mo. I didn’t expect to bring one of this size but what an opportunity for him to become a unified World champion in his backyard.

“This is a real fighter’s fight, one of the fights of 2019 so far. There will be other World title fights on the card and some big Heavyweight fights to be announced. It will be a stacked night of boxing, that’s what we do and that’s what DAZN do.”

Vince Parra, Maurice Hooker’s trainer: “I want to thank Eddie Hearn, DAZN, Matchroom Boxing USA, Top Rank and Jose’s team, but more than anything I want to thank Mo. When I got him, he was a young prospect, I told a reporter he was like a bolt of lightning and I just knew that if we harnessed it and put it in the right way that he could do something special.

“Last year in England he did that, we’ve always taken the hard road, we’ve been the underdog, hitting the road and going all over the US together, living out of hotels and sparring the best fighters we could. He’s always trusted me, and I thank him for that because he’s exceeded even my expectations. I want to compliment JR and his great team, but more than anything these two fighters stepped up. They didn’t hide behind anything, they want to decide who is the best 140lb fighter in the division and they are doing their part, so I applaud them both for that.

“This is a great opportunity for me to match wits with a great trainer like Robert Garcia, and for Mo to match skills with Jose Ramirez. On July 27 there will be a new unified WBO and WBC champion, and it will be Maurice Hooker in his hometown of Dallas.”

Robert Garcia, trainer of Jose Ramirez: “We’re really happy to be here and glad that this fight was able to happen. These are the fights that need to happen and people are missing out on so many fights because of the problems that promoters and TV networks have, but we were able to make this happen and I’m glad because it’s one of the best fights of the year, I can guarantee that. Jose is very motivated and ready to do this, and I am sure Maurice is preparing well too. It’s a hell of a fight and one the fans will remember for many years.”

Dino Duva, RocNation Sports: “I am so happy to see Mo getting this huge fight at home. After he beat Alex Saucedo, he boxed Mikkel LesPierre, two fights in a row on the opponent’s home turf. Eddie and I talked and said we wanted to bring Mo back home, so I want to thank Eddie and DAZN for that.

“Maurice deserves it, he hasn’t fought here for a long time and he certainly deserves it as champion. You couldn’t ask for a better match-up for Mo’s homecoming. Jose Ramirez is a great champion, it’s a unification with a Mexican-American star – you can’t ask for a better fight for this area. Dallas has become a real hotbed for great fights, there’s been huge events here over the last couple of years and this is going to be right up there with the best of them. I really believe this fight could be one of the best that we’ve seen in a long time, the match-up, the style, the background, everything about it leads to a special and historic event.

“To echo what Eddie said, I want to thank Jose, Top Rank, my old friend Robert Garcia, for doing what had to be done to make this fight, for Mo to have his homecoming in as good a match as you could as for. Matchroom Boxing USA and DAZN have done a terrific job with us for Maurice and with boxing in general. If you look at the line-up DAZN has had, you can’t beat it, and now, with this beautiful venue in Arlington, it’s going to be a special night that you don’t want to miss on July 27, I hope that the local fans support the night.”

RIVERSIDE — Last July, Jose Ramirez was boxing Maurice Hooker for two super-lightweight championships in Arlington, Texas.

“It was on his network, in his hometown, in front of Texas judges,” said Robert Garcia, Ramirez’s trainer. “The first four rounds were close. I told Jose, hey, we’ve got a lot going against us here. You’ll have to give me a little more.”

Garcia was hoping Ramirez would turn on the juice in the last 20 or 30 seconds in order to steal rounds.

Ramirez replied, “Okay, tell me when half the round is over.”

Garcia laughed on Thursday, just thinking about it.

“He’s going to go hard for the last minute and a half?” he said. “But that’s who he is.”

Ramirez finished Hooker in the sixth round. He is 25-0 with 17 knockouts. On Feb. 2, which is Super Bowl Sunday, he will take on former champ Viktor Postol at the Mission Hills resort in Haikou, China.

A WBO mandatory fight with Jack Catterall of the United Kingdom would be next.

But the main event at 140 pounds is Ramirez vs. Josh Taylor, who bullied his way to a Super Series title over Regis Prograis. Taylor has the IBF and WBA belts.

Lo and behold, Bob Arum’s Top Rank signed Taylor this week, meaning that the theoretical will become the real.

“Taylor knows the landscape,” said Arum, Ramirez’s promoter from the beginning. “He knows the exposure he can get on ESPN, and he knows he can now fight Jose Ramirez. And both know that there’s the opportunity to go to 147 and get into position to fight Terence Crawford.”

Ramirez showed up at Garcia’s Boxing Academy here Thursday and expertly dodged the Taylor questions. “If that fight happens, we’ll have a plan,” he said.

The collateral goal is to make sure Ramirez, known for his social conscience, becomes known for his activism on canvas. With Garcia in his corner, he has become more explosive and less merciful.

“He wants to do everything to the max,” Garcia said. “We have Vergil Ortiz. He’s going to be a champion someday, and he can really crack. Sometimes I’ll want Jose to spar with someone else, just to get him a rest. He always says no.

“Same thing at the end of camp when he’s been cutting weight and he might be a little tired. He doesn’t take a shortcut.”

Ramirez, 27, is from Avenal, near Fresno. His parents came from Mexico, and Jose often worked the fields, picking peppers. He draws wild crowds when he fights at Fresno State’s SaveMart Center, and he has been a busy advocate for immigrants and for water distribution reform.

“We went to Hainan, where the fight will be, and showed a video presentation,” Arum said. “Some of the leaders saw Jose leading protests and I could tell they were getting a little uneasy. But then they saw him in Gov. (Jerry) Brown’s office, going over legislation. They relaxed then, because they saw him working with government. He’s got every opportunity to go into politics someday.”

Ramirez is taking one fight and one career at a time, but his ambitions are clear.

“You can’t wait for things to happen,” he said. “If you’re waiting for the system to do everything, you’re just giving it more control.”

Ramirez has worked with Rep. Zoe Lofgren on several immigration bills. He says the police and the employers in the Fresno area are protecting immigrants “as much as they can. But the employers can’t go knock on every door and make sure people come to work every day.

“When the workers watch TV and see ICE taking 600 people away from a company in the Midwest, we have to make sure that stops,” he added. “If we want to continue to have crops with good quality, we have to take care of the people who go out there and pick. It would allow us to have better workforce control at the border, better security, a better way to figure out who comes in and out.

“It’s something that has to be done, and I would think the President would sign a bill like that because it affects jobs  It would bring back what we’re known for, the American Dream.”

Ramirez smiled as Garcia wrapped his hands for his sparring session.

“The important thing is to be transparent,” he said. “I’ve got my identity. I’m not looking for another one. I want to be touchable, want people to be close to me. Hopefully I can inspire people. and bring them together.”

First, he wants to start with four belts.

Hooker vs. Ramirez results: Jose Ramirez unifies titles with vicious 6th-round stoppage of Maurice Hooker

DALLAS — Jose Ramirez vs. Maurice Hooker had all the makings of a fight of the year candidate, until it suddenly came to a halt when Ramirez unified the WBO and WBC super lightweight titles with a devastating sixth-round stoppage of Hooker on Saturday night in Hooker's hometown and live on DAZN.

This 50-50 fight at the College Park Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington wasted little time winning over fans. A clash of styles turned into a scintillating showdown between previously unbeaten fighters, with Ramirez's pressure making all the difference. It was expected that Hooker would use his 80-inch reach and work from the outside while the 2012 Olympian knew he had to work his way inside to get Hooker's attention. Few, however, knew that the fight would produce early fireworks that would send the crowd into a frenzy and never let up.

It all started started when Ramirez sent Hooker down in the first round. It was clearly a slip but ended up being ruled a knockdown, which forced Hooker into having to fight from behind early. Sensing that Hooker may be desperate, Ramirez went to work on his opponent's body and refused to give him room to breathe. Hooker did have his moments whenever he was able to push his way off the ropes and bring the fight into the center of the ring. He plucked away at the jab and set up some impressive power shots, including a hard right hand that briefly wobbled Ramirez in the fourth round.

Again, Ramirez's pressure was simply too much. In the fifth, he drilled the hometown fighter to the body and set up thudding hooks upstairs just when Hooker's hands would come down.

And then, this heated bout in front of an ultra-hot crowd quickly came to a halt.

Both fighters slowed down in the sixth after fighting at a frantic pace over the fight's first 15 minutes, but a lazy jab from Hooker was all the opening that Ramirez needed. The 26-year-old fired a hard left hook that immediately decimated Hooker's equilibrium and sent him stumbling into the ropes. Ramirez wasted little time closing the distance and throttling Hooker with a bevy of power shots to force the stoppage at the 1:48 mark.

Ramirez improves to 25-0 (17 KOs) with the victory. More important, he added Hooker's WBO title to his WBC title and will await the winner of another unification bout between Regis Prograis and Josh Taylor later this year as he aims to become the undisputed king of the super lightweight division.

“I felt very confident within my skills just like any fighter," Ramirez said afterward. "A real champion has faith in themselves. I believe in my team, I believe in myself. I came here with one mission: to become the unified champion and I did it. I am the very best guy.”

Hooker aims to come back stronger after suffering the first loss of his career.

“I just lost focus for a quick second," Hooker (26-1-3) said. "I was playing around with my jab hand and I lost focus. That just shows you, one second with a top fighter can change everything.”

Here's a look at how the full Hooker-Ramirez card went:

Jose Ramirez unifies titles with wicked sixth-round stoppage of Maurice Hooker

Result: Just as things were slowing down, Ramirez launched a counter left hook that wrecked Hooker. With blood in the water, Ramirez applied pressure and throttled Hooker with power shots until he earned the stoppage at the 1:48 mark of Round 6.

Round 6 (12:12 a.m.):  A slower start to this round. All of a sudden, Ramirez uncorks a left hook that destroys Hooker. Hooker tries to cover up but Ramirez is all over him and landing heavy. It's over!

Round 5 (12:08 a.m.): Hooker lands some solid uppercuts as Ramirez ducks inside. Ramirez rushes in and lands some hard body shots. He's really digging in. Hooker is freezing in there. Hooker rallies and slams a left hook into Ramirez's face. But Ramirez's pressure is the story in a fight that is shaping up to be a fight of the year contender. 10-9, Ramirez (49-45, Ramirez)

Round 4 (12:04 a.m.): Hooker lands a hard right hand to open the round. Ramirez slows down slightly but still working his way inside. Great short right by Hooker followed by a body shot. 10-9, Hooker (39-36, Ramirez)

Round 3 (12:00 a.m.): Ramirez is negating Hooker's reach advantage by closing the distance, but Hooker opens up on the inside for a brief rally. Ramriez drives in and pounds away a Hooker again. It's a tale of two fights with Ramirez winning. 10-9, Ramirez (30-26, Ramirez)

Round 2 (11:56 p.m.):  Hooker working well off the jab and lands a hard counter left. Ramirez storms in and lands a hard left hook. Ramirez sinking hard shots to the body and has Hooker trapped. Hot exchanges. Double left hook from Ramirez. Ramirez keeps the pressure on and has Hooker trapped with body shots as the round closes. 10-9, Ramirez (20-17, Ramirez)

Round 1 (11:52 p.m.): Ramirez applies pressure immediately. Hooker lands a right hand, and Ramirez drops him with a counter. It looked like a slip. An extremely hot crowd lights up whenever these two exchange. Hooker countering well while Ramirez continues to press. Both had their moments, but that's a Ramirez round. 10-8, Ramirez

11:41 p.m.: It's not his hometown, but Jose Ramirez gets a nice ovation from the crowd in Texas. This is Maurice Hooker's city, however, and the man from Oak Cliff, Texas, is receiving a rousing ovation.

Tevin Farmer retains title with hard-fought unanimous decision over Guillaume Frenois

Result: The scores of 119-108, 116-111 and 116-111 shouldn't be used as an indicator of how this fight went. Frenois brought the fight to Farmer but had a hard time finding a home for his punches. Farmer's defense was brilliant, and he scored with his jab when necessary. The 119-108 score is ridiculous, but the right man won.

11:06 p.m.: There have been a fair share of borderline punches by Farmer, but one clearly drifts low and costs him a point in the 10th. It may not matter, but you never know how the judges are seeing this fight — neither fighter has definitively taken off with it.

10:54 p.m.: Farmer has opened up a bit more on offense and is sitting down on his punches. That still hasn't been enough to get Frenois to stop throwing. A low blow in the seventh round sent Frenois into a frenzy of punches, and Farmer dodged nearly all of them. Again, Farmer is very impressive on defense but now appears to be interested in scoring in the later rounds.

10:45 p.m.: Farmer is working but Frenois clearly isn't going to lay down and has landed some good shots. We're entering the sixth round and Farmer hasn't quite run away with this.

10:32 p.m.: The biggest takeaway after two rounds is the improvement Farmer continues to make as a defensive fighter. He may never have the power to get opponents out early, but he has learned how to make them miss and make them pay. He's up two rounds on Frenois, who is an unknown but arguably beat Jono Carroll in his last fight.

10:18 p.m.: The most active champion in boxing, Tevin Farmer, is up next, aiming to win convincingly and get closer to possibly landing a shot against Gervonta "Tank" Davis, who's also fighting tonight.

10 p.m.: After 10 rounds of action, judges see it in favor of Williams by unanimous decision (97-91, 97-91, 96-92). Williams was the sharper, more accurate puncher and more polished boxer overall. He showed a willingness to make it a phone-booth fight, even though he didn't have to.

9:45 p.m.: Another blatant low blow as the ref deducts another point from Vicente in the seventh round.

9:43 p.m.: Ref deducts a point from Vicente in the sixth round for a low blow. Williams is the sharper boxer, but this has been a good fight.

9:30 p.m.: Williams and Vicente still very much trying to feel each other out through three rounds. You get the feeling that we're on the brink of fireworks in this one, though.

9:15 p.m.: Tramaine Williams and Yenifel Vicente have made their way into the ring, and this welterweight tilt will pave the way for the co-main event, pitting Tevin Farmer, looking to defend his IBF super featherweight title, against Guillaume Frenoi.

9 p.m.: The main card is officially live here.

8:38 p.m.: Well, that was fast. Williams drops Harris with a vicious left hook liver shot, and Harris doesn't even think about getting up. An impressive first-round KO for Williams just one minute and 51 seconds into the fight. Harris is still down in pain.

8:30 p.m.: Austin Williams against Jabrandon Harris in middleweight action on the way, as the crowd continues to file in.

8:25 p.m.: Dawejko and Hernandez both landed clean shots through 10 rounds, but judges saw it unanimously in the favor of Dawejko by the scores of 96-94 (twice) and 98-92, although the last score was too generous.

8 p.m.:  Both Dawejko and Hernandez looking for a fight-changing punch to land through four rounds in this bout scheduled for 10.

7:45 p.m.: Joey Dawejko vs. Rodney Hernandez in heavyweight action up next. This is a rematch from their split draw in April 2017. Dawejko has sparred against the likes of Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and the newly-crowned unified world heavyweight champion, Andy Ruiz Jr.

7:35 p.m.: Ababiy remains undefeated with the unanimous decision (60-54 across the board). Calzada, 30, definitely made the 20-year-old work for the win, though.

7:30 p.m.: Let's see how the undefeated Ababiy (5-0) closes out this fight, as it enters the sixth and final round.

7 p.m.: This undercard from the University of Texas at Arlington is officially live on DAZN, as we're about to get started with Nikita Ababiy taking on Yunier Calzada.

Jose Ramirez Given Slight Edge Over Maurice Hooker in Battle of Super Lightweight Champions

Posted on: July 27, 2019, 01:00h.

Last updated on: July 26, 2019, 07:39h.

Jose Carlos Ramirez is being given the slightest of advantages against Maurice Hooker in their super lightweight title unification bout Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

Maurice Hooker Jose Ramirez

Ramirez is a -139 favorite according to DraftKings Sportsbook, with Hooker fetching +105 odds in the battle between the two undefeated champions.

Ramirez, Hooker Part of Four-Way Unification Struggle

Saturday’s bout features two of the four undefeated champions at the top of boxing’s super lightweight division. Ramirez (24-0, 16 KOs) holds the WBC title, while Hooker (26-0-3, 17 KOs) is the WBO champion. The two other champions – Josh Taylor (15-0, 12 KOs) and Regis Prograis (24-0, 20 KOs) – hold the IBF and WBA titles, respectively, and are set to have their own unification fight in October.

That means that Saturday’s clash could well serve as the first semifinal in what proves to be a complete unification west valley school district yakima wa the super lightweight titles. If that weren’t enough to give the fight the feel of a major event, there’s also the fact that Hooker is fighting in his home town, which should mean that an electric crowd is on hand to see if a local hero can get one step closer to becoming an undisputed champion.

It’s been crazy at home since the fight was announced. Everybody has been telling me that they are coming and telling me to put on a show,” Hooker said, via Bad Left Hook. “Dallas seeing me fight as a world champion is so big for me and for the city, all the kids I’ve spoken to in the schools, the people that look up to me, can now watch me live.”

Hooker has proven to be a difficult matchup for just about everyone in the 140-pound division. In his most difficult fight so far, he came back from an early knockdown against the previously undefeated Alex Saucedo, using his height and wingspan to fight effectively from the outside and eventually secure a win by TKO in the seventh round.

A Clash of Styles

On the other hand, Ramirez will look to get inside against the taller Hooker in the hopes of negating that reach advantage, setting up an intriguing contrast of styles. According to Ramirez, who hails from California, he’s not worried about stepping into Hooker’s back yard for the biggest fight of his career so far.

“Maurice wanted the fight in his hometown so it was up to me to accept those terms and I did,” Ramirez said, according to BoxingScene.com. “Sometimes the fights on the road are easier because I don’t have the same responsibilities when I am fighting in Fresno as I am co-promoting the fights with Top Rank and I have to do a lot of appearances, but now I am the guest so I am here to do my job.”

While Ramirez may be the slim betting favorite, most boxing experts have described this encounter as a 50/50 fight, as it is unclear which fighter will have the easier time imposing his style on the other. While Hooker has the handful of blemishes on his resume thanks to the three draws, he’s also fought somewhat tougher competition than Ramirez.

Whichever fighter comes out on top could face an even tougher test in the future. While Ramirez and Hooker are highly regarded, Both ESPN and BoxRec rate Taylor and Prograis as the top two boxers in the weight class, and either would be favored over the winner of Saturday’s fight in a potential unification bout.

His parents came from Mexico, and Jose often worked the fields, picking jose ramirez maurice hooker.
