Austin FC ready to come home for first time in club history

Austin FC needed years of planning and 18,600 frequent flyer miles to form a club and complete an eight-match road trip to start the 2021 Major League Soccer season and bring major league sports to Austin.

The wait, and travel, will end Saturday when El Tree hosts the San Jose Earthquakes at 8 p.m. in the home opener at Q2 Stadium. The venue debuted Wednesday night with a sellout crowd watching the U.S. women’s national team beat Nigeria 2-0.

The players are ready. Fans from supporter groups such as Austin Anthem and Los Verdes faithfully followed Austin FC around the country, including more than 200 attending matches in Colorado and Nashville. Their presence was felt, and anticipation grew for when the Verde and Black could play in front of 20,500 fans chanting "Dale, Dale, Dale, ATX.”

“Every single time that we’ve gone on the road so far, there have been hundreds of Austin FC fans that traveled to support us, and we felt that,” Austin FC starting center back Matt Besler said Thursday. “We appreciate that love, and we can’t wait to repay that love in front of everyone on Saturday. We’re looking forward to it, and thank you.”

Austin FC spent the lead-up to the season, and the first few weeks of the road trip, downplaying the impact of so much travel. After all, these are professional athletes at the peak of their powers. Guys who run a 10K every match can surely handle eight round-trip flights over nine weekends, right? Well, sort of.

Austin FC started the season with two wins in its first three matches and was 10 minutes away from a third win in the fourth game. The wear and tear began to materialize in the second trip to Los Angeles when the Galaxy beat a flat Austin FC squad with relative ease. The offense was anemic the next week at Nashville. That trend continued as Austin FC went three full matches without scoring until the 1-1 draw last weekend at Sporting Kansas City.

"I learned it was much more difficult than I thought it would be" to play the first eight on the road, Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff said after the final match of the eight-game stretch. "It was what is the routing number for first interstate bank tough opponent. It's a tough schedule against good teams. I also learned that we're willing to fight and compete."

News: Austin FC to face Liga MX's Tigres UANL in July 13 friendly

The travel is only one of numerous reasons that Austin FC struggled in the second half of the voyage. Austin FC faced the top four teams in the Western Conference during that time, ending with draws against Seattle and Kansas City, which are currently ranked first and second. And Nashville sits in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points and no losses.

The major concern for Austin FC is in the final third. Defensively, the Verde and Black are holding up despite a plethora of shots allowed because of the high-level play of goalkeeper Brad Stuver. Only two teams in the conference have conceded fewer goals than the nine allowed by Austin FC through eight matches. Meanwhile, the Austin FC offense has managed a conference-low six goals.

“Coming out of COVID, there is just a natural grander energy, and the atmosphere is going to be significant. For us, it is about staying calm in the lead-up,” Wolff said. “We want to use that energy to catapult us onto the field. We work through the week in a systematic way so we feel ready and confident.”

Fanendo Adi got his maiden goal for Columbus Crew in Tuesday’s 4-1 pre-season win over San Jose Earthquakes.

The forward scored a 30th-minute goal as Crew breezed past the Goonies in the warm-up game played in Cancun, Mexico.

The tie which featured four 30-minute periods saw the ex-Nigeria U23 man score first before Pedro Santos, Jordan Hamilton and Derrick Etienne Jr. completed the rout as Caleb Porter’s men continued their build-up to next season’s Major League Soccer outing.

Editors' Picks

After being let go by FC Cincinnati owing to an injury-plagued campaign last season, Adi reunited with his former Portland Timbers boss Porter - under whom he won the 2015 MLS Cup.

He is expected to lead the frontline again when Crew take on Sporting Kansas City in another friendly billed for Ariz on February 12.

After that clash, the MLS outfit travels for the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup, where they square up against Phoenix Rising FC, New York Red Bulls and Houston Dynamo.

They begin their MLS battle against New York City at the Mapfre Stadium on March 1.

Saturday’s performance for FC Dallas in their 3-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes may be an early-season wake-up call for the team. There were periods where Luchi Gonzalez’s club looked decent, created chances and was dangerous but there were a lot of spells in the game that saw them on their heels, behind the ball and chasing the game.

At the end of the day, this is a game that we can take a lot of away bjs bangor as we build on this new season. It is early after all, and this is a marathon. We can get worked up over the result but a new game will be right around the corner for us to watch this coming weekend.

Oh boy, that formation

Yeah, let’s start here. I know we all hate this new 3-4-3, or 5-2-3 kind of look. I don’t like it for a number of reasons. I know it is making most of you question Gonzalez and his ability as a head coach too.

Let’s start with the basics here, the Quakes have a decent offense but not a world-beater either. This kind of formation actually puts a little more emphasis on the defense with five defenders on the field, plus those in the midfield. On this day, we had two #8s in the midfield in Tanner Tessmann and Bryan Acosta. Both looked really out of their depth in this formation against San Jose and because of that, it showed even more so in the attack.

Speaking of the attack, this formation does require a little more energy up front. Jader Obiren and Freddy Vargas do look like good MLS players to me but they are still getting used to their new teammates, this formation and MLS as a whole. That just takes a bit of time for young guys like this who are new to almost everything here.

And then there is Franco Jara. In a small way, I want this to work with him. I do. But yesterday was another spot that just proved to us all that he does not fit this group well enough right now to be a day-in and day-out starter for this team. Gonzalez needs a ton of energy up top, like a Maxi Urruti or a Blas Perez. Jara is not that. He also needs more service around the penalty box to be himself and in this look, he just does not get that as well.

The missing link in the midfield

Two games down and I think it is safe to say that FC Dallas misses a guy like Thiago Santos. I know I said that was a good bit of business on their part to sell him earlier this spring but so far that deal is coming back to bite them a bit on the field. FCD misses that bite, that grit, that guy that gets into challenges and keeps the pressure off the backline. I like Tessmann, but he’s really not that guy. Acosta isn’t that guy either.

Maybe it is time for Gonzalez to really pull out a gambling-type move and start Edwin Cerrillo. He raved over his preseason in this role and if there is ever a moment to give him a chance to be that guy at the #6, it is now.

Youngsters make a difference

Watching this game, down 3-0, Gonzalez finally goes to his bench in a big way. We all knew the moment that Ricardo Pepi, Paxton Pomykal and even Eddie Munjoma (!) got on the field that things would change. And they did for the most part. Dallas went from chasing the game to gaining some sort of stability on the ball in the midfield against a tough man-marking bunch in San Jose. Unfortunately, as we know by now, it was too little too late.

In our Big D Soccer group chat during the game, a lot of us said that we felt had Jesus Ferreira not picked up a knock right before the season opener last week that we might be in a different spot with him and Pepi. I fully believe that Ferreira would have made a massive difference in this game in a way that would have opened up the attack even more late in the game. But, again, we have to wait on seeing such a thing.

Still, this game called for youth and once they were finally out on the field it proved to be the difference for FCD. Instead of getting blown out 3-0, they walked away with a goal and something to build on for their next game against Portland.
