Frost 25-bank expansion in Houston ends with Cypress location

On HoustonChronicle.com:VillageMD expanding services into Cypress with new acquisition

“When we announced the Houston expansion in 2018, we knew it was an ambitious plan,” said David LePori, Houston region president for Frost. “When you think of the challenges we’ve overcome since that time — the pandemic and the economic impacts of it, having employees working remotely, helping small businesses get emergency loans to keep workers employed — it says a lot about the dedication and skill of Frost bankers that we not only completed the expansion, but that our new financial centers are outperforming our expectations.”

Banks were deemed one of the essential businesses allowed to remain open under strenuous conditions.

“We knew that we were a critical part of our nation’s economy and community. We had to remain able to service our customer’s needs,” he said.

Initially, LePori said they aided customers through their drive-thru windows, a trend many banks are moving away from.

“We made appointments (to conduct inside business) to control the environment around our employees and customers,” the regional president said.

LePori said they were lucky in one respect in that COVID happened about halfway through their expansion.

“We had momentum and a great deal of successes. We just kept the ball moving. It took some creativity and movement. We have loyal employees that picked up an extra load because it was important,” he said.

With most of their properties already identified, at that point, it was permitting, buildout, staffing and then training to be accomplished. No easy task.

Interviewing online was a new obstacle for the bank.

“Talking to them in a one-dimensional realm and not being able to shake their hand and look them in the eyes was a challenge. We had to develop new skills with Zoom or (Microsoft) Teams,” he said.

LePori said they benefitted from their reputation in the marketplace amongst their customers and other banks.

“Other bankers were reading about our branch openings and looked for opportunities with Frost,” he said. Originally, he was concerned about finding enough high-quality people to fill his positions, but his anxiety was relieved with the talent they hired.

“I’m really floored and impressed with them. How we did so well and bringing them in. We already had a year of training under our belt before COVID and that also helped us,” he said.

He believes strongly in the culture they have created at Frost they want to preserve.

“We think our culture is the secret sauce. We want them to come and buy in and part of that is being able to develop internal relationships which was a challenge on the computer screen,” he said.

As they integrated more employees back in with a safe environment, those positions have solidified.

LePori said the bank has built their reputation on good old-fashioned customer service and delivered on that creed during the pandemic.

“We issued 32,000 PPP loans that totaled $4.7 billion. For a bank our size, we really did our customers and communities well,” he said.

And, he pointed out, that was accomplished while maintaining their normal duties. It wasn’t just one phone call, but multiples of calls handling the PPP requests.

“The job’s only half through. We’re in the forgiving the loan process with those customers now,” he said.

The increase in sites

With a trend that shows more consumers doing mobile banking, Frost leadership still looked for more. According to J.D. Powers 2021 report, the nation’s retail banks last year successfully navigated an historic transformation in which a record 41 percent of customers are now digital-only.

“We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that our online products are functional and can handle our customer’s needs and our online platform are strong, and we find a lot of people find us on that,” LePori said. But even though they are visible online, their research discovered customers want to live close to a financial center.

With 30-plus financial centers to begin with, the expansion was to reach more customers where they lived.

In studying the habits of their customers, over 60 percent of their people that execute transactions in their financial centers do not work or reside in the trade area where the financial center is located.

“We’re on their way to and from their daily activities,” he said.

It wasn’t just with current customers, but a significant majority of their new accounts were generated in the financial centers from people who neither work nor reside in those areas.

“It’s very important to be in the right pathway of people’s activities. Being convenient,” he said.

With that valuable information in hand, LePori said they realized the number of branches they had didn’t suitably serve all their customers.

“We were looking to achieve sustainable, organic growth. Our chairman’s words were leveraging the cash flow or the income statement as opposed to the balance sheet in finding a way to strategically grow our company in our most dynamic market place,” he said.

The secret sauce to success

LePori says their secret sauce to success is what motivates their employees to come to work every day.

“If you look at our story, J.D. Powers has ranked Frost Bank as the number one retail bank in Texas for 12 years in a row. People expect service,” he said.

In the midst of COVID, everybody didn’t get a call back from their bank.

“We were available and took care of our customers. You can’t have a relationship with your phone, your tablet, or the online platform. People want to connect even if it’s a callback.”

In a crowded banking market, LePori said their culture is built on a three-legged stool: they treat everyone significantly, customers and colleagues; in Texas vernacular, “We’re going to give you a square deal”; and finally, Frost is a safe, sound place to bank.

“We’re very happy where we’ve positioned ourselves in the market,” the Houston regional president said.

Their new financial centers are built with customers in mind including a welcoming greeter station, where bankers can assist customers with making a deposit and withdrawal, answer account questions, open an account or apply for a loan.

The expansion for Frost in Texas isn’t over. They are about to embark on another 25 financial centers in the Dallas area. They are sharing their experiences here in Houston.

“Our chairman said we’re not through in Houston yet,” LePori said.

The 153-year-old bank operates 154 financial centers across Texas, including the 53 in the Houston region.

Frost Bank Savings Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$50
Access to Your Savings AccountOnline, mobile and at physical locations.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$3.50 monthly fee, waivable with $300 minimum balance
Current Terms and Rates0.01% APY

To open a savings account at Frost Bank, you need to start with a deposit of at least $50. However, a larger deposit ($300) is required to avoid the monthly service fee. While that fee is fairly low, at just $3.50, it will still cancel out any interest payments earned on your account.

The interest rate offered on Frost Bank savings accounts is 0.01%. Though not especially high, this does beat most major banks such as Chase and Wells Fargo. Those for whom interest payments are a priority should consider one of Frost’s money market accounts or a certificate of deposit - see below.

Frost Bank savings accounts come with a free Visa debit card. This can be used to withdraw money for free from Frost ATMs. Use of other ATMs will cost a $2 fee, in addition to any fees charged by the ATM owner. The debit card can also be used to make purchases, but note that Frost only allows two withdrawals per month on its savings accounts. Withdrawals beyond that limit cost an additional $3.

Frost Bank Certificates of Deposit

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$1,000
Access to Your CD AccountOnline, mobile and at physical locations.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
FeesNo monthly fee, but early withdrawal penalties may apply.
Current Terms and Rates
  • Accounts of $1,000 - $99,999:
    • 90 Day: 0.04% APY
    • 180 Day: 0.08% APY
    • 12 Month: 0.13% APY
    • 24 Month: 0.20% APY
  • Accounts of $100,000 and over:
    • 14 Day: 0.01% APY
    • 30, 60 & 90 Day: 0.11% APY
    • 180 Day: 0.13% APY
    • 12 Month: 0.18% APY
    • 24 Month: 0.25% APY

Certificates of deposit offer the highest interest rates available at Frost Bank. If you are willing to give up access to your money for several months, or even a few years, you can earn CD interest rates as high as 0.25%. A 90-day CD earns an interest rate of up to 0.11% depending on your balance, substantially higher than rates offered by most large banks.

The minimum deposit required to enter a certificate at Frost Bank is $1,000. There is no premium for larger deposits until you reach $100,000. Higher rates are offered for deposits above $100,000.

With a certificate of deposit, you are agreeing to leave your money where it is for a set period of time. This means you cannot withdraw cash from your account as you can with a savings or money market account. Nor can you deposit additional funds as you go. In order to increase your CD investment, you would have to open a new CD.

That is not to say your money is completely frozen. If for some reason you want to exit your CD, you will be required to pay an early withdrawal penalty. The penalty is based on your interest rate and the length of your term. For CDs of 30 days to one year, the penalty is 30 days of interest. Longer CDs have an early withdrawal penalty equal to 90 days of interest.

Frost Bank Money Market Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$50
Access to Your Money Market AccountOnline, mobile and at physical locations.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$15 monthly fee, waivable with $15,000 minimum balance
Current Terms and Rates
  • Account balances below $25,000: 0.06% APY
  • Account balances of $25,000 - $49,999: 0.06% APY
  • Account balances of $50,000 - $99,999: 0.06% APY
  • Account balances of $100,000 - $249,999: 0.06% APY
  • Account balances of $250,000 and over: 0.06% APY

Frost Bank money market accounts offer higher interest rates than the standard savings account, but they come with a big catch: to avoid the monthly fee of $15, you need at least $15,000 in your account at all times. Below that amount, the service fee essentially cancels out the higher interest rates.

For those who can meet that minimum deposit, a money market account with Frost Bank offers a nice bump in interest rates.

A money market account also offers somewhat greater flexibility with your money, including check-writing and up to six free withdrawals per month. Above that threshold, there is a $10 fee on withdrawals.

Frost Bank Personal Checking Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$25
Access to Your Checking AccountOnline, mobile and at physical locations.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$8 monthly fee, waivable with one of the following
  • $100 monthly direct deposit
  • $1,000 minimum balance
  • $5,000 balance across all Frost accounts

Frost Bank’s personal checking account has a number of features that make it an attractive option for Texas residents. To begin with, it requires a minimum opening deposit of just $25.

The $8 monthly service charge ($4 for students) can be avoided with a monthly direct deposit of at least $100, or a minimum balance of at least $1,000. A total balance of $5,000 among all Frost Bank accounts also negates the fee.

The account comes with a Visa ATM card, and free access to over 1,200 ATMs in Texas. So as long as you are in the Longhorn State, you won’t have trouble accessing your cash. Outside of the state, however, you will have to pay a $2 ATM fee on non-Frost Bank ATMs, in addition to ATM owner fees.

One of the best features of the Frost Bank checking account is that it comes with free overdraft protection transfers. That means that if you make a miscalculation and write a check that puts your account in the red, Frost Bank will transfer funds from another account, such as a savings or money market account, for free.

Where Can I Find Frost Bank?

Frost Bank has a significant presence in Texas, with over 1,200 ATMs and 130 locations. It does not have any locations outside of the Lone Star State, however.

What Can You Do Online With Frost Bank?

Frost Bank’s website and mobile app give customers full access to all of their accounts. This includes checking account balances, transferring funds between accounts and opening new accounts. You can also deposit checks with Frost Bank’s mobile app.

How Do I Access My Money?

Most Frost Bank accounts come with a free Visa debit card. Withdrawals can be made for free at a Frost Bank ATM, of which there are over 1,200 in Texas, though the number of withdrawals is limited for some types of accounts. You can also make purchases with your debit card.

If you lose your debit card, you can always stop into one of Frost Bank’s financial centers. There are over 130 in the state of Texas.

How Can I Save More Money With Frost Bank?

One of the best ways to increase your savings with Frost Bank is to put some of your money in a certificate of deposit. Frost offers good rates on its CDs. A two-year CD earns 0.20%, with a starting deposit as low as $1,000, and no fees if you leave your money in the account for the full period. Note, however, that your rate in a CD is frozen; if interest rates increase, you may not be able to take advantage of the higher return.

What’s the Process for Opening an Account With Frost Bank?

You can open a Frost Bank account on its website. To do so you will need a Texas address, a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license and your Social Security number. With those in hand, the process is fairly quick. You will also need funds for your initial deposit, which can be done by making a transfer from another bank account.

If you want to open an account with cash, stop into one of Frost Bank’s financial centers. In addition to your money, you will need the same information as required for the online process.

What’s the Catch?

This may be obvious at this point, but it bears repeating: Frost Bank is a Texas bank. It does not have any locations outside of the state. So if you are planning on spending substantial time in other parts of the country, it may be inconvenient to access your money.

Bottom Line

For residents of the Lone Star State, Frost Bank should be an appealing personal banking option. It offers competitive rates on most of its accounts, along with attractive features like free overdraft protection transfers for checking accounts. With over 1,200 ATMs in Texas, accessing money within the state is easy. Those who spend substantial time elsewhere, however, might prefer a bank with a wider footprint.

Frost Online Banking Login

These elements are:

  • Frost bank sign in fields – "My Frost User ID" and "My Frost Password";

  • The help hyperlink just right of the signing button explaining the elements and the procedure of Frost banking login;

How to Start Using Frost Banking Online Services

Just click "Sign Up" and then complete the forms opened for you. Frost online banking service requires you having a checkcard/ATM with a 6-dingt protection PIN to start using it with Frost. You may not expect any problems during the registration process if you can fill all the forms correctly.

Before choosing user ID and password, think twice about matters of security. Do not use any obvious passwords and, perhaps, obvious logins. If you are, say, a US president, it is not a point to use "MyWhiteHouse" as a login and, so more, it will be completely stupid to set up for the password a text "Hail to the chief who have chosen by the nation" followed by a year of your election. This method is too obvious for thieves or hackers, anyway.

You may log in to Frost online banking just by filling "My Frost User ID" and "My Frost Password" fields on the form depicted above, and then by clicking "Log In to My Frost" button.

As a general advice, we can frost bank online services insist that you must not to use auto-fill login and password options at your mobile devices, as unscrupulous evil-doers grabbing your device in hands may be supplied by extra trophy of your savings in addition to your stolen device.
