Is the bank open on new years day -

New Year's Day falls on January 1 and marks the start of a new year according to the Gregorian calendar. It marks the end of New Year's Eve celebrations in the United States and gives many Americans a chance to remember the previous year.

Is New Year's Day a Public Holiday?

New Year's Day is a public holiday in 50 states and 1 federal district, where it is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.

What Do People Do?

The start of New Year's Day, at midnight, is heralded by fireworks, parties and special events, which are often televised. Very few people have to work on the day itself. For many it is a day of recovery from the New Year's Eve celebrations the previous night. In some towns and cities, parades are held and special football games are played. The birth of the first baby in the New Year is often celebrated with gifts to his or her parents and appearances in local newspapers and on local news shows. Many people make New Year's resolutions. These are usually promises to themselves that they will improve something in their own lives. Common New Year's resolutions are to stop smoking or drinking alcohol, to lose weight, exercise more or to live a healthier lifestyle.

Public Life

Government offices, organizations, schools and many businesses are closed in the USA on New Year's Day. Public transit systems do not run on their regular schedules. Where large public celebrations have been held, traffic may be disrupted by the clean-up operation. In general, public life is completely closed down.

Background

The Gregorian calendar is widely used in many countries such as the United States. This was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. The Julian calendar that had been in use until then was slightly inaccurate, causing the vernal equinox to move backwards in the calendar year. The Gregorian calendar was not accepted everywhere and some churches, particularly with origins in Eastern Europe, still use other calendars. According to the Gregorian calendar, the first day of the year is January 1.

Symbols

A common symbol of New Year's Day is Baby New Year. This is often a white male baby dressed in a diaper, a hat and a sash. The year he represents is printed on his sash. He rarely a newborn baby, as many pictures show him sitting up or even standing alone. According to mythology, Baby New Year grows up and ages in a single year. At the end of the year he is an old man and hands his role over to the next Baby New Year. Other symbols of New Year's Day are spectacular fireworks exploding over landmarks and clocks striking midnight as the year begins.

Christmas and New Year parking arrangements

Take special care where you park your cars over the Christmas and New Year break.

Controlled parking zones (CPZ)

Drivers can leave their cars free of charge for as long as they like in designated on street parking bays across Wandsworth. They will not need to purchase a pay and display ticket, pay-by-phone or display a parking permit if they use a marked-out bay on the below dates with the exception of Wimbledon AFC Event Day parking bays on Sunday 26 December 2021 when there is a match scheduled.

The dates will include:

  • Saturday 25 December 2021 - Christmas Day
  • Sunday 26 December 2021 - Boxing Day (excludes Wimbledon AFC Event Zone)
  • Monday 27 December 2021 - Christmas Day Bank Holiday
  • Tuesday 28 December 2021- Boxing Day Bank Holiday
  • Saturday 1 January 2022- New Year’s Day
  • Monday 3 January 2022- New Year’s Day Bank Holiday

There will be normal parking enforcement in operation on all other days across the festive period including:

  • Friday 24 December 2021 (Christmas Eve)
  • Wednesday 29 December 2021
  • Thursday 30 December 2021
  • Friday 31 December 2021 (New Year’s Eve)
  • Sunday 2 January 2022
  • Tuesday 4 January 2022

Find out about normal hours of restrictions for CPZs.

Yellow line restrictions

However, drivers should avoid yellow lines on these days as these restrictions will still be in force. This is because yellow lines are normally situated at places where parked vehicles could cause a hazard or an obstruction.

Parking bays

Drivers who leave their cars in parking bays that are only partially available throughout the day should check the signs carefully to avoid staying there when the yellow line restrictions come into force. These bays are mainly found in bus lanes.

Driveways, specialist bays and dropped kerbs

Motorists who obstruct driveways or park unlawfully in doctors' bays, car club bays, electric charging bays, bus stops or mandatory disabled bays may also be penalised.

Similarly, drivers should not park across dropped kerbs. These are found on virtually every street corner and allow people who need to use wheelchairs or mobility scooters and parents with pushchairs to safely cross the road. As well as receiving a penalty notice, vehicles that breach these rules may be towed away

Car parks

Motorists using the car parks in Battersea Park and in the Burr Road car park adjacent to King George’s Park will still need to buy a pay and display ticket or pay-by-phone on the above dates. There is no free parking at any time in these car parks.

Housing estates

Normal parking rules will also apply on the borough’s housing estates - drivers who do not have a valid parking permit should not use these parking spaces.

CCTV

CCTV enforcement of moving traffic contraventions will continue 24/7 throughout the Christmas season to ensure good accessibility and low congestion.
