My Verizon: How To Enroll in Auto Pay

Verizon automatic bill pay phone number -

No one really likes paying bills, so automating the process can be very appealing.

Automatic bill pay lets you set up recurring transfers or payments from your bank or credit card to pay your bills — phone, tuition, cable, utilities, mortgage or any other payments you owe on a regular basis — on a timeline you designate.

Here are the main reasons a lot of people take advantage of automatic bill pay:

  • It’s convenient
  • You don’t have to remember every bill and due date
  • You don’t have to visit several websites to get everything paid
  • You don’t risk forgetting to make the payments

Money expert Clark Howard loves the convenience of automatic payments — but has one big warning about them.

In this article, we’ll look at how automatic bill pay works and discuss what Clark does — and does not — want you to do when you set them your payment system.

How Automatic Bill Payments Work

Automatic Bill Payments Through Your Bank

Chase automatic bill pay

You have two options with automatic/recurring payments from your bank account:

Online Bill Pay

The first option, online bill pay, is set up through your bank. You give your bank your account information for each creditor, and the bank automatically pays the bills each month from an account you designate.

You don’t need to give your bank account number to anyone because your bank initiates the transaction. That means your banking information is less at risk.

You choose the amount to pay (based on the amount of your monthly bill) and the date the payment is made. That way, you know when to expect that specific amount to be withdrawn from your account.

If you’re using a checking account to make the payments, set up an alert for before the date the payment is supposed to go through. That way you can be sure you have the funds available and avoid any overdraft charges.

Automated Debit Transactions

With automated debit transactions, you allow a creditor to deduct money from your checking or savings account on a recurring basis. You provide the payee with your bank account and routing numbers so it can execute the transaction. There’s a big potential downside to this. When you give the authorization to draft from your account, it is an open-ended arrangement regardless of your contract with the company.

Also, no matter how much money is in your account, an automated debit will always go through. If you don’t have the funds in there, you’ll end up owing even more because of overdraft fees and any fees the payee might charge.

Remember when we said Clark Howard had a warning about automatic bill pay? It’s this:

“You never want to give a company the right to draft from your checking account. The reason why is: They can mess up! That money can disappear from your account and it can be very difficult to get it back. What’s a better idea when it comes to automatic payments is set it up where they charge your credit card each month. That preserves your rights, and your money is not at risk.”

Automatic Bill Pay Through Your Credit Card

Many companies now accept credit card payments online, and that’s a much safer way to automate paying your bills.

Credit cards offer far better protection for you as a consumer, which is why you should always use a credit card (instead of a debit card or drafts from a savings account) for any payments that could potentially cause you problems — like online transactions.

You can set up automatic payments through the company (ex. T-Mobile for your cell phone bill, Amica for your auto insurance bill, etc.) to pay each bill before the due date each month.

Then, if you see a suspicious charge, you can dispute it immediately, and the process of getting your money back is usually a lot easier than with debit cards or automatic debit transactions.

Using a credit card could also have the benefit of racking up card rewards or cash back with money you’d be paying toward your bills anyway.

Remember, though, that even when you set up your automatic payments on a credit card, it’s crucial that you review your statement each month for any potential errors or false charges. That way you can report them immediately.

Final Thought

To recap, Clark Howard is a big fan of automatic bill pay as long as you:

  • Set it up as online bill pay through either your bank or credit card
  • Do NOT use automated debit transactions
  • Set up alerts in advance of your bill due dates to make sure you have money to cover the bills
  • Always check your statements carefully for incorrect, duplicate or fraudulent transactions

The biggest factor in calculating your credit score is your payment history — whether you pay your bills on time. So when it comes to how you pay your monthly bills, you want to figure out a method that works best for you so that your payments stay on track.

Used correctly, automatic bill pay can go a long way to helping you boost your score.

"Automatic Bill Payment" Means Verizon Pays Your Bill, Then Sends You Another One

Last week, I was suddenly unable to log into my Verizon account to retrieve e-mail. My DSL and phone line still worked, but when I tried to log in on Verizon.net I got a message simply stating that my account had been “disabled.” There was no explanation, no instructions, and no contact information. I searched the site for a phone number, first clicking through “help” and then a “contact” link, which asked me whether I’d prefer e-mail or phone. With no way to e-mail, I clicked “phone” and was prompted to log in. Upon doing so I got the same message about my disabled account. No information.

I visited gethuman.com and dialed the number posted for Verizon. I spoke with someone at Verizon who told me that my account was overdue, even though I could have sworn I checked my bill online a month ago and all was fine, set up with automatic payment. They assured me I owed them, and the account person on the phone could not take my payment. She had to direct me to another system that would take my payment, and then I’d have to hang up and call the first number back to get my account reinstated. She said this might all result in a few days of disruption to my DSL service.

She transferred me to the system, which simply asked me to enter the amount I’d like to pay. The woman had never told me what I owed, and the system wouldn’t tell me either. So, I had to call back, go through the waiting process, finally got the figure (more than $200!), transferred back, paid off the amount, hung up, and called the first number for a third time. This person told me that she couldn’t simply turn my account back on – she had to cancel my DSL and put it through as a new order, a process that would take up to two weeks during which time I’d have no DSL service. I pointed out that my DSL was still connected, and I had now paid off the bill, so why would she have to cancel it? The woman claimed that it was because they needed to give me a new account number and there was nothing to be done about it.

Thinking this was absurd, I decided to check my options and see if I should just switch to another service. I made a list of other providers, but before I switched I wanted to make absolutely sure that Verizon couldn’t streamline the process to get my DSL back up and running quickly.

The next day was Friday and my DSL was still working. From my office, I called Verizon one last time. I explained the ordeal to the man, pointing out that service was still on and the account was paid in full, but I needed my e-mail log-in turned back on. He said that was no problem, that he could have it running in a few hours. I asked him repeatedly whether or not my DSL would remain on, and each time he said yes. While we were on the line, he asked if I wanted to upgrade to faster DSL. I had been considering it, so I agreed on the basis that my DSL would have no interruption in service. He assured me I’d have it all weekend, and on Monday the faster service would start.

Arriving home from work Friday night, I found that my service was disconnected, and it remained so all weekend.

On Monday I came to work and was finally able to log into Verizon.net. This allowed me to view past bills, which did state that they were paid in full every month automatically. I called Verizon again and demanded to know what was going on. The man explained that because I originally asked for my (Verizon) DSL to be on the same bill as my (Verizon) phone line, the way they handle it is to have Verizon’s phone department pay off the Verizon DSL bill every month and add that amount to the Verizon phone bill. Logging onto my Verizon account would only show an amount paid in full each month, which I assumed was paid by my bank account but was in fact paid by . . . VERIZON.

This explanation took awhile to sink in with me. When I finally got it, I moved on to the next problem. Why was my DSL shut off? The man explained to me that the man I spoke with on Friday was mistaken, and that there was no way to stop the shut-off order which had apparently been sent out Wednesday but wasn’t acted upon until Friday. The third person I spoke with was the correct one – it would take two weeks to reconnect. He made it clear there was no way around this.

I was so frustrated by that point that I asked him to please stop the DSL upgrade I had ordered and cancel the DSL altogether, as well as the phone line, because I had no desire to do business with Verizon any longer. He put me on hold for five minutes while he wrote a detailed note of everything we discussed (covering his ass, I’m sure), and then confirmed that all services would be shut off. There was absolutely no attempt to keep me as a customer.

On a side-note, I then called AT&T and asked for information on the cheapest phone and Internet plan they had, explaining I wanted something comparable to what I was paying through Verizon (less than $30 a month). The woman first told me the cheapest combo was $65, and when I balked she pretended to spend three seconds looking again and said the cheapest was actually $45. When I asked a third time if that was the lowest price available she changed her mind again and said it was actually $35. I hung up on her. If it weren’t for the fact that I need the Internet to run my web site and do my weekly podcast, I’d settle for using the library. Now I’m not sure what I’m going to do, since I’m in no mood to hand over money to liars.

How To Get a Copy of a Cell Phone Bill

When you purchase a cell phone and pick a service plan, you'll be given the option to choose between paper and paperless billing. Some companies charge a nominal fee for paper bills, while others offer a discount if you opt for paperless billing with autopay. No matter which you choose, there may come a time where you misplace or accidentally delete your bill. You'll need to request a copy of the bill in order to ensure the amount due is satisfied before any late fees are assessed.

Call Your Service Provider

One way to request a copy of your cell phone bill is to call the service provider directly. The benefit to this option is that you can also pay your bill over the phone at the same time. You can get the number to your service provider's customer service team from an old bill or from their website. For example, if you visit US Cellular online, you'll see that the phone number is 1-888-944-9400.

Once you reach the representative, you can request the total amount due, pay your bill and ask that a copy of the bill be sent to you for your records. It's important to note that some companies charge a fee for phone payments, but this is still better than the consequences of a late payment if your bill is due before you can pay it using another method.

View Your Bill Online

If you don't need a paper copy of your bill, but simply wish to review it, you can log in to your company's online platform and check your cell phone bill from there. You'll find there are two ways to do this.

From a computer or laptop, head to your service provider's website. Enter your login details and, once inside your account, check for a tab that says something like "My Account." Look for an "Overview" tab next and then "View Bill Details." This will allow you to open your most recent bill.

If you need to see a previous bill, look for a tab that says "View Previous Statements." Some companies use the tab "History" instead. From there you can select the month you need to review.

From a mobile device, you'll need to download the service provider's app from either the Apple Store or Google Play. Open the app and sign in. You'll need to enter your account information the first time, but if your phone has thumbprint or facial recognition, you may be able to use that to sign in afterward.

Tap the "Account" icon and then "Billing Details" to view your most recent statement. According to Xfinity, you'll need to visit the Xfinity Assistant screen in order to view cell phone bills from the past.

Download and Print Your Statement

Unless you have a wireless printer, you'll need to use your home computer to download and print a cell phone bill. Log in to your online account and locate the bill you'd like to have a physical copy of following the directions above. Look for either a bill PDF icon or the words "Print as PDF" next to the statement. You can click that icon and then print the cell phone bill directly or download it to your computer to be printed out later.

According to Verizon, you'll only be able to access bills online from the previous 18 months. You must call the company to obtain a copy of a bill from the previous 19 months to seven years. Each service provider varies in how long they store documents, so you'll need to call and ask about your provider's policy.

Tips

  • Some cell phone providers allow you to request a copy of your bill online. To do this, you will have to register on your provider's website. There will often be an option either under "Support," "Billing" or "My Account" that will allow you to request a copy of your bill to be sent either via mail or electronically.

How to Talk to a Real Person at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile

By Philip Michaels

Forget navigating endless automated tech-support menus. We can help get you to a real, live tech-support rep at the Big Four carriers with minimal fuss.

Sometimes, you crave a human connection, especially when the alternative is listening to a soulless robot reciting a menu of telephone-tree options. That's never more evident than when you need to call the customer support number of your wireless carrier. When you're already frustrated by your phone, do you really want to take your chances with an automated service menu if you could just jump ahead to a living, breathing, helpful person?

Reaching out to us via email, an anonymous reader certainly wanted to ditch a robot helper for a human one on a recent call to Verizon but was frustrated to find a prior method for circumventing Big Red's automated phone menu now causes the call to hang up.

"There is no way to reach a human anymore! Maybe someone needs to report they cut out humans altogether?"

I'm pleased to inform you that we needn't bow down before our robot overlords just yet. You can still reach a human tech-support rep at Verizon, though the method has changed and you'll need to have an account PID handy when you call. (More on that later.) That's becoming a standard practice with wireless carriers, which want you to prove you're actually a subscriber when you're calling about your wireless account.

Talk to a real person at Verizon

Here's how I breeze through Verizon's automated phone system to get straight to a person.

1. Call Verizon's service number at 1-800-922-0204.

2. When the automated system begins talking, press zero.

3. The automated system will ask you to say why you're calling. Press zero again.

4. At this point, the system will promise to connect you to an operator, but it will ask you to enter your account PID. (That's a four-digit number you set up on Verizon's website.) Enter it, and press #.

You'll soon find yourself talking to an actual human.

Or, at least, I found myself talking to an actual person. Our anonymous reader tried repeating my steps and not only heard a different set of menus from Verizon's automated system but also got hung up on. We’ve reached out to Verizon to figure out why the two of us had such different experiences. My best guess: I'm a postpaid customer, and our anonymous reader has a prepaid account. Customers who want to skip straight to the talk-to-a-person part of the proceedings may balk at having to enter an account PID. But it's a decent security measure, and even with that step, it took me only 45 seconds to go from the start of the call to conversing with a helpful Verizon rep.

"That's great for Verizon subscribers," customers of other major wireless carriers may be muttering. "But what about my needs?" We've got you covered there, too.

Talk to a real person at AT&T

1. Call AT&T's service number at 1-800-331-0500.

2. When the automated system alerts you that your call may be recorded, press zero. (Don't try to jump the gun on AT&T by pressing zero the moment the automated message starts playing; that robot keeps talking until it says what it's planning to say.)

3. You'll be asked if you're calling from the phone number associated with your account. Press zero again.

4. The automated system will ask what service you're calling about. Once again, mash that zero button.

5. After all that, you'll finally get through to a human operator.

Talk to a real person at Sprint

1. Call Sprint's customer service number at 1-866-866-7509. As of this writing, Sprint greets you with a promotion for the newly launched Galaxy S9. No matter how many times you mash zero, the sales pitch will continue, so you’ll just have to sit through it.

2. You'll be asked if you want to conduct the call in Spanish. Press 2 (unless you do want the call to proceed in Spanish, in which case you'd press 8).

3. The automated system will begin to recite menu items. Just press 5 to skip all that.

4. Assuming you're calling for customer support, press 2. (Pressing 1 takes you to sales at this stage.)

5. Here's the part where Sprint will ask for the phone number associated with your Sprint account. Again, this is how Sprint guarantees that it's talking to an actual subscriber.

Talk to a real person at T-Mobile

1. Call T-Mobile's customer support line at 1-877-746-0909.

2. Wait patiently while the automated system asks you if you prefer to speak Spanish on this call.

3. When the automated system starts asking you questions, just say "I don't have one." (One what? I don't know, either ... I'm just trying to get you to a human operator.)

3. The automated system will start talking again. Press zero to put a stop to that and get connected with an actual person.

Great Value and Service!

Sorry, I don’t care what other carriers advertise or how they try to trash advertise against Verizon.... they have been a great carrier for me and our family! I initially went with them because of their signal quality and clarity during a call. And I recently made a trip through the WV Turnpike. I had a signal all the way through the valley, up and down Ghent Mountain and into Ohio. It didn’t use to be that way.... kudos on new towers and transmission beacons.
Sprint could take notes on signal strength...
I had them as my initial carrier from SC to FL and when I moved to NC. Dropped calls, signal and clarity in my work and neighborhood was marginal. I had enough and went to their office. Complaining about coverage areas and service. The day I left them, complaining about service the store manager tried helping me due to my complaints. Funny thing, he tried making a call because he said it was my phone... he tried calling the office while I stood there..... and he said, “ Hhmmm! No signal. And I was in their office!!
I told you so!!!!
Switched that day to Verizon and never looked back...

Billing / customer service

Absolutely the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. I give it 0 stars . I’ve been a long , loyal , upstanding customer with Verizon for many years , and at the beginning of 2020, I discovered I was being overcharged , and then the pandemic set in . I could not reach a customer rep for months . When I did , I was told I wasn’t switched to the new plan and was overpaying by at least $100- for months . I barely make any money as it is . I was also informed that Verizon cares about their customers and they “ understand” we’ve fallen on hard times , but that the offer to help with plans and payments was expired ? I didn’t even know about this offer ? No one told me until it was too late ? The pandemic is still going , last I’d heard . Gee - thanks. Great caring for your customers ! After making a payment arrangement and sticking to it , I recently learned it wasn’t being held up on Verizon’s end and I was being charged over 100 more than initially agreed upon , and this was following a payment I just made ? Then I was informed I was paying convenience fees ( which I was told I wasn’t ) and then late fees because of late payments ? I wasn’t late !! This is absurd and I can’t get a customer representative who can actually help me and resolve this in a fair and amicable way ! This is an utter disgrace ! I look forward to leaving this company . It’s a shame . They USED to be great ..

Problem redeeming credits

I have tried redeeming credits twice. The first time, the process worked fine. The second time, the system would not redeem my credit for the offered Starbucks savings. I tried contacting Support, but it seems to be artificial intelligence and did not understand what I wrote. It asked me to use different words. I have, in general, found Verizon Support to be hit and miss. For a recent trip out of the country, two different support staff failed to give accurate information about how to get Verizon coverage. The website information was correct but it was not relayed correctly by staff. May 23, 2020: redeeming points continues to be a problem. Today, I found the offer from Verizon for them to donate five dollars to a kids food program. I went through the process and agreed to the donation. For whatever reason, I continued looking at the information available and found out that I had to go through a second step in order for Verizon to actually make the donation. This seemed to me to be an attempt by Verizon to make it seem that they were going to make the donation without it actually costing them anything. Why would a customer need to say more than once that they wanted Verizon to make the promised donation?

Verizon Recalls 2.5 Million Ellipsis Jetpack Mobile Hotspots Imported by Franklin Wireless Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

Consumers can reduce the risk of hazard by powering the unit off, unplugging it from its power source and store in a place away from children, on top a hard surface with adequate ventilation around the unit and away from combustibles  until it can be properly returned to Verizon.

If consumers must use the product for internet access, then they should take the following steps:

  • Turn the recalled hotspot “on” and plug it in to allow the hotspot to receive two over-the-air automatic software updates that:
    • (a) enable the device’s identifying number to be viewed on its scrolling screen and
    • (b) prevent the device from charging while the device is plugged in and powered on.
  • After the software update is applied, users should:
    • (a) Leave the device powered on while it is plugged in.
    • (b) When not in use, the device should be turned off, unplugged from its power source, and securely stored.
  • Consumers should use the contact information below to receive a replacement hotspot free of charge and a return envelope to return the Ellipsis to Verizon for safe disposal.
  • Schools that provided the recalled Ellipsis Jetpack to students have been contacted by Verizon with instructions on receiving replacement hotspots free of charge and mailing packages to return the recalled Ellipsis Jetpacks to Verizon for safe disposal.
  • Parents whose children received the recalled Ellipsis Jetpack from their schools should contact their school for instructions on how to receive a free replacement device and return their recalled Ellipsis Jetpacks.

Here's how I breeze through Verizon's automated phone first hawaiian bank wahiawa to get straight to a person.

1. Call Verizon's service number at 1-800-922-0204.

2. When the automated system begins talking, press zero.

3. The automated system will verizon automatic bill pay phone number you to say why you're calling.

We will update this story if we get a definitive explanation.

Verizon Wireless is about to make paying monthly cellphone bills a little more expensive.

Starting Jan. 15, the nation’s leading mobile carrier will charge customers $2 each time they pay their monthly bills with a credit or debit card. The fee will not apply for users who set up automated payments.

The carrier, which has more than 90 million retail cellular subscribers, said it was adding the fee to help cover the costs of verizon automatic bill pay phone number many credit-card transactions it processes.

But Verizon offered several ways to avoid the charge, including using its automatic-payment system that bills customers’ credit cards each month, paying by electronic check and paying electronically from a bank’s website. Paying by credit card in a Verizon store will also be free, as will mailing a check.

Other carriers have tried to get subscribers to move to automatic payments through other means. AT&T offers a $10 gift card for those who set up AutoPay. Sprint Nextel charges $5 bank of america mortgage 800 number subscribers who have caps on the fees they can rack up each month unless they set up automatic payments.

It’s not uncommon for utilities, universities and even state tax departments to charge convenience fees for online payments. Each credit-card payment comes with fees that the companies can avoid by getting electronic checks instead.

Verizon Communications, the land-line phone company that owns most of Verizon Wireless, tried last year to introduce a $3.50 fee for people who paid their bill for FiOS TV or Internet service month-to-month by credit card. It backed off after complaints.

Do you use automatic bill pay to help keep your finances in order and your credit in good shape? Share your strategies in the comments below!

How to Cancel a Verizon Wireless Bill Payment

Verizon allows customers to pay a wireless bill using a checking or credit account. When you schedule a payment, it can come out of the account on the same day or you can schedule it to come out on a specific day as a one-time payment, or as a monthly automatic withdrawal through Verizon's Auto Bill Pay service. Many different reasons exist for cancelling a payment such as funds availability issues or an incorrect scheduled payment amount. Whatever your reason or the payment method used, you can cancel the payment one of three ways as long as Verizon hasn't already withdrawn the monies.

Step 1

Log in to your My Verizon account at least four business days before the scheduled bill payment date. Select "Auto Bill Pay" from the options, click "Suspend" and follow the on-screen instructions to cancel the Verizon wireless bill payment.

Step 2

Contact Verizon to cancel the payment through customer service. If you don't know your local Verizon wireless phone number, go to the Verizon Set Your Location Web page, enter your ZIP code or select your state from the drop-down menu, then click the "Set Location" button to get a contact number.

Step 3

Call or visit the financial institution that maintains the account Verizon is withdrawing the payment from and request a stop payment before the money is withdrawn.

If you receive your monthly Verizon Wireless bill and you notice that something is wrong, it’s important that you figure out where the hidden fees came from, and whether they are accurate or not.
