It feels like just yesterday that the fifth-generation Corvette made its debut, promising a bright future for America's Sports Car. But, it was actually 20 years ago, and the C5 could soon become a collectable. Well, certain C5 Corvettes as classic-car insurer Hagerty explains in a new article on its site.
Based on data acquired through insurance quotes, Hagerty predicts that C5 Corvette prices could bottom out next year. Over the last 12 months, Hagerty observed a two-percent (or $400) fall in average quote values for all C5 Corvettes, and certain models like the Z06, Indy 500 Pace Car, and 50th Anniversary already appreciating.
Manual-transmission C5s are worth around 10 percent more than their more common automatic-equipped counterparts, and interestingly, convertibles are more valuable than coupes. The ultimate C5 is the 2004 Z06 Commemorative Edition—just 2025 were built to celebrate Corvette Racing's Le Mans success and each came with a carbon-fiber hood.
Hagerty also highlights the oft-forgotten Fixed-Roof Coupe (FRC) as being a Corvette to look out for, and we agree. Built for the 1999 and 2000 model years, the manual-only FRC was as a cheaper, more enthusiast-focused alternative to the regular hatchback Corvette. Its lighter, stiffer structure eventually made the basis for the track-ready Z06.
But we can't help but think a regular, manual-transmission Corvette Coupe would make a great buy too. It's not rare, but it's got Chevy's bulletproof, powerful LS1 V8 under the hood, and a 175-mph top speed. And it's more practical than the Z06 and FRC. What more do you need?
If you can spring for a Z06, though, we'd recommend it. We've been beating the C5 Z06 drum for a long time, but there's a good reason for that—with a skilled driver and a good setup, it's as fast as anything on track. And you can have a great, track-prepped Z06 for $25,000 or less.
As we've theorized before, however, regular C5 Corvettes could hold their values since so many seem to be owned c5 frc unmotivated sellers. C5 frc, if you see a manual-transmission C5 at a good price, especially a FRC or a Z06, buy it now. They could become unattainable sooner than you'd expect.

For $25,900, This 1999 Chevy Corvette FRC Asks How Low (In Miles) Can You Go?
Today’s Nice Price or Crack Pipe Corvette FRC has only 7000 miles on the clock, and that’s across two owners! Let’s see if the low mileage and the fixed roof add up to a price that’s low enough too.
With an 83% Crack Pipe loss, yesterday’s weird Cadillac/Thunderbird/Pontiac mashup proved that, yes, there is such a thing as too much freedom. That oddball custom may not have been everyone’s interpretation of the quintessential American car, but today we’re going with a rare edition of one that undeniably is.
The C5 Corvette is perhaps the third-least loved edition of Chevy’s long running sports car, after the late editions of the C3 and the earliest of the C4s. That would explain why the market for C5s has been in the doldrums for a few years now despite the model being a watershed for the marque.
Consider this, the C5 ‘Vette introduced the hydroformed box frame under its plastic bodywork. That served to stiffen the car considerably over its C4 predecessor, and sounds wicked cool to say at a party. The C5 also moved the gearbox (either 4L60 auto or BW T-56 six-speed) to the rear imbuing the car with the Corvette’s first-ever road-going transaxle. That gave the car better weight distribution and again, is great party conversation fodder.
This 1999 FRC is even cooler than that, and is one of the rarest Corvette models around. The fixed roof coupe started out as an attempt by GM’s bean counters to add a stripper model to the Corvette lineup. That was going to be a car with a smaller less powerful motor, a mandated automatic gearbox, cloth seats, no power anything in the cabin, and puny wheels and tires. This was all to be wrapped in a fixed-roof body eliminating the pricy targa or convertible toppers.
Thankfully, the whole idea of a bargain bin ‘Vette besmirching the brand was shelved, but the FRC that arose from the ashes of that plan was—and is—a pretty special ride. First off, that fixed roof body, which is derived from the convertible, proved to be 12 percent stiffer than the standard car, making it the stiffest Corvette in history at the time. The FRC also received some pretty killer kit, including the 345-bhp LS1 under the hood, and that T-56 out back as the only powertrain combo available. The Z51 performance suspension was also specified as was a single interior color (black) and only six exterior colors.
This one comes in Arctic White and with only 7,000 miles on the odo. That amazingly low mileage is even after having two owners. Two owners who perhaps could not drive stick, or who maybe simply preferred to take the bus places. I don’t know, If I had one of the best handling and performance-minded Corvettes at my disposal… well, you wouldn’t see me for a while, you’d just hear my cackles of delight off in the distance somewhere.
Okay, use it or lose it, right? With only 7K on the clock over the course of 17 years all the seals have probably turned to raisins, and the fluids have deconstructed to their base elements, or so the theory goes. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case here, as it’s described as being in perfect working condition and it looks great too. And, seeing as it’s being sold by a dealer it probably has been through their inspection process which means… well, probably nothing. Still, work with me people!
I mentioned that this is one of the rarest of all Corvettes. The FRC did pretty well when it was introduced in 1999, selling 4,031 that first model year, good to capture fully 12 percent of Corvette sales for the year. It sold fewer the next year, and when the romper-stomper Z06 arrived the following model year the fixed roof car was unceremoniously kicked to curb by Corvette performance aficionados, and sales tanked.
That’s too bad seeing as this is one of the more interesting and flingable ‘Vettes you could—and still can—buy. To buy this low-mileage example you’d need to show up at that dealer with the ability to plunk down $25,900. What do you think, does this FRC seem to be worth that kind of asking? For our second-best 1990s Corvette award, we decided to go to the end of the decade and get a bit obscure with the 1999 Hardtop, Fixed Roof Coupe, or simply “FRC.”
After debuting the C5 with a limited run of 9,752 coupes in 1997 and introducing the Convertible in 1998, Chevrolet introduced a third body style for model year three. The idea was to create a lighter weight and more performance-oriented model at a more attainable price. Engineers achieved c5 frc of this by attaching a fixed fiberglass roof to a convertible body. The resultant car shaved more than 90 pounds from the coupe while also improving rigidity by 12%.
The FRC was only available with a 6-speed manual transmission and the Z51 Performance Handling Package came standard, all for about $400 less than a base coupe and $6,800 less than the convertible on which it was based.
The model only accounted for 4,031 of the 33,270 Corvettes built for ’99 and each of them was missing several items that you could get on the other two C5 variants.
Base, non-power adjustable, black leather seats were the c5 frc option and optional colors shrank to just five choices – Torch Red (1,245 produced), Arctic White (311 produced), Nassau Blue (the rarest at just 202 produced), Black (1,227 produced), and Light Pewter (1,040 produced).
The hardtop was powered by the same 345 HP LS1 as the rest of the ‘Vette range but its lighter weight allowed it to be slightly quicker. The sprint to 60 MPH took 4.7 seconds and it could rip through a quarter mile in 13.3 seconds at around 108 MPH with a top end of 175 MPH. These numbers were almost negligible compared to a base coupe but the Corvette team’s insistence in building the FRC anyway was an important harbinger of their serious intentions towards world-class performance.
One final note: 1999 was also the year that Chevrolet finally allowed the Corvette to return to factory-backed competition with the introduction of the C5.R.
