When sending cash remittances or wire transfer to an account with BDO, BPI, Metrobank, Landbank, DBP, or any other Philippine bank, you’ll surely need the SWIFT Code of the bank.

Good thing is, you can find all the SWIFT Codes you need in this list!

Make sure you’re using the right bank code because if you provide the wrong digits, your remittance might not be delivered. Worse, you might even get charged a hefty fee for providing incorrect SWIFT Codes or making typo mistakes in the transaction.

I remember one time when I was still working abroad and I sent a wire transfer to the Philippines. I used the wrong Swift Code (which I got from some unreliable source on the internet) but the remittance bank accepted the money transfer transaction. I was told the remittance will be sent in 2-3 days and I thought everything would be fine.

But 3 days later, my recipient in the Philippines told me the money was still not yet deposited in his bank account. The very next day, I went to my remittance bank to inquire and that’s when they told me that the money transfer did not go through!

My remittance bank told me the wire transfer was rejected because I gave the wrong Swift Code. Worse, they charged me $10.00 for the failed transaction!

Yes, it was my fault that I got the Swift Code from some unreliable website back then so don’t make that same mistake. That’s the reason we made this list — containing bank Swift Codes or BIC of financial institutions in the Philippines — which we individually verified to be correct, so that you won’t have to experience the same mistake I did!

Check out below the complete, accurate, and most updated list of SWIFT codes for banks and financial institutions in the Philippines!

SWIFT Code of Banks in the Philippines

What is SWIFT Code?

SWIFT codes are unique identification numbers assigned to a bank or a financial institution around the world.

It’s called SWIFT code because SWIFT is actually an acronym which stands for the “Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication”, an organization that provides a network for institutions worldwide to send and receive information about financial transactions.

What's the meaning of Swift Code?

SWIFT code is the popular term for the Bank Identifier Code (BIC). These codes are typically used when transferring money between banks, particularly for international remittances and wire transfers, and also for the exchange of messages between banks.

A typical BIC or SWIFT Code consists of 8 or 11 characters. The 8-digit code usually refers to the Headquarters or Head Office of the bank, while the 11-digit code is intended for a specific unit or branch of the bank.

The format of the 8-digit or 11-digit SWIFT code (or BIC) typically means:

  • First 4 letters – Bank Code
  • Next 2 letters – Country Code
  • Next 2 characters – Location Code (may consist of letters and numbers)
  • Last 3 characters – Branch Code (these characters are optional; may consist of letters and numbers; if “XXX” is used, the BIC / Swift Code refers to the Main Branch or Head Office)

Majority of international banks adopt and use SWIFT codes for interbank messages and wire transfers. According to the SWIFT Network website, they connect more than 11,000 banks, financial institutions, and corporate customers spanning 200 countries and territories worldwide.

What’s the SWIFT Code of BDO, BPI, Metrobank, and other Philippine banks?

Here’s a summary of the official SWIFT Codes of top Philippine banks. We personally verified these to be correct by calling and confirming the SWIFT Codes from banks themselves.

2Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)BOPIPHMM

Wait, I can’t find the SWIFT Code of my bank branch in the list! If you’re unable to find the SWIFT Code or BIC Number for the specific branch of your bank — regardless if your branch is located in Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao — you simply need to use the provided SWIFT code of the Main Branch and the wire transfer will still go through to your intended branch.

I tried this before, my recipient’s bank account is with BDO and the branch is in the Visayas, and I can’t find the Swift Code of that branch (because they have none!). So I just used the Swift Code of BDO’s head office, which is BNORPHMM, and yes the remittance got processed without a hitch!

But if what you’re looking for is the SWIFT Code of an affiliate company or subsidiary of the bank (not just a branch), check out our other lists below.

BDO’s SWIFT Code or BIC Number

What’s the SWIFT Code of Banco de Oro (BDO)? Again, BDO’s SWIFT Code is BNORPHMM.

This means BPI Family Savings Bank will cease to exist once the merger is complete, which means all BPI Family Savings Bank accounts will become BPI bank accounts very soon.

Swift Code vs. BIC, IBAN, ABA, Fedwire?

What’s IBAN and how is it different from SWIFT Code? Are ABA and Fedwire the same? More importantly, when are these number used?

At first glance, all these codes sound confusing but to simplify, the BIC, IBAN, ABA, and Fedwire numbers are mere codes used by banks to communicate to each other in order to facilitate payments and transfers of money.

We explain their individual differences below.

What is BIC (Business Identifier Code)?

The BIC (Business Identifier Code), previously called “Bank Identifier Codes”, is just another name for SWIFT Codes. It started in Brussels, Belgium in 1973, initially supported by 200+ banks, but have now grown to more than 11,000 partners worldwide in the SWIFT network.

As explained above, the BIC or SWIFT code generally comprises of 8 characters. The extended code of 11 characters, meanwhile, enables payments to be directed to a specific office, branch, or unit of the institution.

The BIC or SWIFT Code is typically the default code needed to facilitate wire transfers. If you’re asked to provide a wire transfer code — and it doesn’t explicitly refer to IBAN or ABA or Fedwire — you’ll be safe using the SWIFT code.

Refer to our tables below for the complete list of SWIFT Codes used by banks in the Philippines.

What is IBAN (International Bank Account Number)?

The IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is currently the standard for payment codes among banks within the European Union (EU), although other non-European countries have also recently started to adopt it including countries in the Middle East and in the Caribbean. As of 2016, more than 69 countries primarily in Europe are using the IBAN numbering system.

The IBAN may consist of up to 34 alphanumeric characters containing all routing information needed to process a payment from one bank to another. This routing code contains key bank account details, such as:

  • Country code – two (2) characters
  • Check digits – two (2) numbers, which can be validated by the bank to confirm the check’s integrity before payment processing;
  • Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) – up to 30 alphanumeric characters, which contain the branch code (also called sort codes) identifying the specific branch receiving the payment and the beneficiary’s account number

What’s the IBAN of Philippine banks? Since the IBAN is primarily used in Europe, banks in the Philippines do NOT use and do NOT have IBAN numbers.

What's the IBAN number of Philippine banks?

What is Fedwire?

Fedwire (also called the Federal Reserve Wire Network) is a real-time funds transfer system used by Federal Reserve Banks in the United States to electronically settle payments among member institutions within the same day. It is operated by member banks of the US Federal Reserve, allowing real-time payments among Fed banks and other participating institutions. The participating institutions must be depository financial institutions in the US which maintain an account with the Federal Reserve.

What’s the Fedwire number of Philippine banks? Philippine banks do NOT have Fedwire numbers since the Fedwire is primarily used only by American banks transacting with the US Federal Reserve.

What's the Fedwire number of Philippine banks?

What is ABA Routing Transit Number?

The ABA Routing Number or Routing Transit Number (RTN) was developed by the American Bankers Association (ABA) in the United States and consists of nine (9) digits which identify the bank or financial institution responsible for the payment or settlement of a check.

The ABA Routing Number typically appears at the bottom of negotiable instruments, including checks, to identify the bank where the check payment will be drawn. In recent years, the ABA RTNs have evolved to identify not only the bank which will settle the check, but also also participants in electronic funds transfer, automated clearing houses (ACH), and online banking.

What’s the ABA Routing Number of Philippine banks? As you can expect, banks in the Philippines do NOT use ABA Routing Transit Numbers (RTN) since ABA is for the exclusive use of American banks maintaining an account with the US Federal Reserve.

What's the ABA Routing Number of Philippine banks?

What is BRSTN or Routing Numbers (Upwork or Paypal)?

What about the BRSTN code or Bank Routing Symbol Transit Number?

If you’re using Upwork and it’s asking for the BRSTN or Routing Number, you’ll have to use the following Philippine Bank BRSTN which is similar with the Paypal Bank Code required in Paypal bank transactions.

We checked with Upwork and the following BRSTN or Routing Nos. should be used. As for Paypal, these are the Bank Codes to use as well.

Bank of the Philippine Islands

Bank in the Philippines

Bank of the Philippine Islands (Filipino: Bangko ng Kapuluang Pilipinas, Spanish: Banco de las Islas Filipinas, commonly known as BPI; PSE: BPI) is a universal bank in the Philippines. It is the first bank in both the Philippines and Southeast Asia.[2][3][4][5] It is the fourth largest bank in terms of assets, the second largest bank in terms of market capitalization,[6][7][8][9] and one of the most profitable banks in the Philippines.[10][11][12]

The bank has a network of over 900 branches in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Europe, and more than 3,000 ATMs and CDMs (cash deposit machines).

BPI was founded during the Spanish colonial era of the Philippines as El Banco Español Filipino de Isabel II. It provided credit to the National Treasury and printed and issued the Philippine peso fuerte, a precursor to today's Philippine peso.[13][14]

History[edit]

El Banco Español-Filipino, 10 pesos bank note (1896)

Colonial period[edit]

BPI was established on August 1, 1851 as the "El Banco Español Filipino de Isabel II" (lit. 'The Spanish-Filipino Bank of Isabel II'), named after the Queen of Spain, Isabella II, the daughter of King Ferdinand VII. It was the first government bank in the Philippines and the third Philippine bank during the Spanish era. One of the founders and primary shareholders at that time was José Joaquín de Ynchausti of Ynchausti y Cía, a prominent Philippine multi-national conglomerate who also founded Tanduay Distillery and built the Puente Colgante. José was the managing director of the bank from 1868 to 1873 and 1876 to 1884.[15]

The royal decree establishing the Banco Español-Filipino also gave it the power to print Philippine currency, the first time the Philippine peso was printed in the country; before 1851, a multitude of currencies were used, most notably the Mexican peso. They were originally called Philippine peso fuerte (PF), or "strong pesos". First printed on May 1, 1852, they were redeemable at face value for gold or silver Mexican coins. The first deposit with the bank was also done on that day by a man named Fulgencio Barrera. Three days later, a Chinese man named Tadian became the first borrowing client of the bank after the bank discounted to him a promissory note amounting to ten thousand pesos fuertes.

On September 3, 1869, following a revolution which overthrew Isabella II, the name was changed to Banco Español-Filipino. In January 1892, the bank moved from the Royal Custom House in Intramuros to the new business district of Binondo after it found out that Intramuros was becoming "economically inactive". It moved to 4 Plaza Cervantes corner Juan Luna Street which was at that time a prime property owned by the Dominican friars.

The first branch of Banco Español-Filipino outside Manila was opened in Iloilo City on March 15, 1897. However, the idea to set up branches outside Manila was formulated as far back as the 1850s, with the first branch planned to be opened in Bacolor, the capital of Pampanga at the time. However, by then, Iloilo and other provinces in Panay had become more productive than Pampanga in the sugar industry, hence the move to open the first branch in Iloilo.

Following the cession of the Philippines to the United States with the signing of the 1898 Treaty of Paris, the bank changed from a Spanish institution to a Philippine one. On January 1, 1912, a decision by the shareholders of Banco Español-Filipino changed the name to the present Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) or Banco de las Islas Filipinas in Spanish. The basis for the name change was Republic Act No. 1790, passed on October 12, 1907, which permitted the bank to change its name. The bank was also privatized during the American colonial period.

Following World War II, BPI was actively involved in the post-war reconstruction of the Philippines. In 1949, with the establishment of the Central Bank of the Philippines (now the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas), BPI lost the right to issue Philippine pesos, a right it had since the Spanish colonial era and during the American colonial period.

Contemporary history[edit]

On December 31, 1969, Ayala Corporation, which had been affiliated with BPI since its establishment in 1851, became the dominant shareholder of BPI, and eventually made BPI into the flagship of Ayala's financial entities.[16]

Starting in the 1970s, BPI has been involved with many mergers and acquisitions. The first merger occurred in 1974 with BPI's acquisition of the People's Bank and Trust Company. Major notable acquisitions include Commercial Bank and Trust Company in 1981, CityTrust Banking Corporation in 1996 and Far East Bank and Trust Company in 2000.

In 1982, BPI became a universal bank, and in 2000, became the Philippines' first bank assurance firm, being the first Philippine bank to offer insurance services after acquiring the insurance companies of the Ayala Corporation, the parent company of the Ayala Corporation. Within that year, BPI also founded the BPI Direct Savings Bank, an Internet bank.

On February 14, 1986, BPI established its own interbank network, Expressnet.

In October 2015, BPI launched their "Make the Best Things Happen" campaign.[17]

In the second quarter of 2019, BPI will start constructing its new headquarters in Makati.[18][19] BPI has tapped Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for its design.[20] The old building will be demolished to make space for the new building.[21]

2017 system glitch[edit]

See also: 2017 Bank of the Philippine Islands systems glitch

On the morning of June 7, 2017, a data processing glitch affected BPI clients making their account balances incorrect.[22] Some clients had either a negative balance[23] or an increased amount of money in their account.[24] The error was fixed in the evening,[25] but the next day, June 8, BPI suspended electronic services because incorrect balances occurred again.[26] The services were restored once more on the evening of the same day upon fixing the defect.[27]

BPI BanKo[edit]

BPI Direct BanKo, Inc., A Savings Bank (operating as BPI BanKo) is a wholly owned subsidiary of BPI established through the merging of BPI Direct Savings Bank (the first internet-based bank in the country), allowing expatriate Filipinos and overseas workers in countries like Bahrain or Hong Kong to access and manage their bank accounts at any time) and the BPI Globe Banko.

BPI Globe BanKo's predecessor BPI Direct Savings Bank, was incorporated and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on September 26, 1986, primarily as a subsidiary meant to engage in the general business of savings and mortgage banking.

In 2000, BPI Direct underwent a major image change as it became the first Philippine bank designed around the telephone and online banking channels. Two years later, BPI Direct realigned its business strategy towards the Overseas Filipino community.

As the result of BPI Direct and with BPI Globe BanKo (another thrift bank unit of BPI) merging in December 2016 forming BPI Direct BanKO Inc. (BPI BanKo).

BPI's consolidation of its two subsidiaries forming BPI Direct BanKo, is its answer to the growing microfinance-small and medium enterprise finance industry sector in the Philippines, competing directly with notable SME/Microfinance institution in the country - ASA Philippines, Card Bank (CardBank and Card SME Bank), and LifeBank MFI.

Subsidiaries and partners[edit]

BPI is divided into the following subsidiaries and affiliates:

  • BPI Asset Management and Trust Corporation
  • BPI Capital Corp.
  • BPI Computer Systems Corp.
  • BPI Family Savings Bank (Savings bank of BPI)
  • BPI BanKo (merged BPI Direct Savings Bank and BPI Globe BanKO Savings Bank) (Small and medium enterprise and microfinance oriented rural-savings bank of BPI)
  • BPI Forex Corp.
  • BPI Foundation, Inc.
  • BPI International Finance Ltd.
  • BPI Investment Management. Inc.
  • BPI Leasing Corp.
  • BPI Operations Mgt. Corp.
  • BPI Rental Corp.
  • BPI Securities Corp.
  • BPI/MS Insurance Corp.

Ownership[edit]

While Philippine Central Depository is listed a major shareholder, it is more of a trustee-nominee for all shares lodged in the PCD system rather than a single owner/shareholder.

1 Includes DBS Bank
2 Voting powers vested ex officio in the Archbishop of Manila.

SWIFT codes are unique identification numbers assigned to a bank or a financial institution around the bank of the philippine islands bpi quezon city metro manila.

The extended code of 11 characters, meanwhile, enables payments to be directed to a specific office, branch, or unit of the great west life insurance.

  • Check digits – two (2) numbers, which can be validated by the bank to confirm the check’s integrity before payment processing;

On December 31, 1969, Ayala Corporation, which had been affiliated with BPI since its establishment in 1851, became the dominant shareholder of BPI, and eventually made BPI business savings account vs checking the flagship of Ayala's financial entities.[16]

On February geico insurance pay bill, 1986, BPI established its own interbank network, Expressnet.

On the morning of June 7, 2017, a data processing glitch affected BPI clients making their account balances incorrect.[22] Some clients had either a negative balance[23] or an increased amount of money in their account.[24] The error was fixed in the evening,[25] but the next day, June 8, BPI suspended electronic services because incorrect balances occurred again.[26] What is the routing number for first interstate bank services were restored once more on the evening of the same day upon fixing the defect.[27]
