Volunteer Voices: 1st United Credit Union, Chabot Elementary
To celebrate our inspiring Oakland School Volunteers, we’re asking them to share their stories. These are their Volunteer Voices.
Chabot Elementary Adopt-a-School Volunteers from 1st United Credit Union
The credit union movement began with a simple idea of people helping people. That’s why 1st United Credit Union quickly embraced the opportunity to adopt an Oakland school, Chabot Elementary.
“As a local not-for-profit credit union, we are in business to support the well-being of our members,” explains Greg Pulliam, Chief Administrative Officer for 1st United. “But our purpose is greater than simply offering competitive financial products and excellent member service. Our commitment extends to volunteerism, supporting local schools, and safeguarding the financial future of children and families in our community.”
As one of the first credit unions in California, founded locally in 1932, 1st United saw Adopt an Oakland School as an opportunity to make a real difference for students, families, and teachers. “Our Rockridge Branch is located a half a mile from the school. We’re glad to extend our support to our community,” says Greg.
1st United has a history of making charitable contributions and volunteering a priority. Lisha Fabris, 1st United Communications Manager, says they have ramped up volunteer efforts even more this the past year, encouraging every staff member to volunteer at least four (and up to 20) hours during company time. “Our community has seen us helping out at local schools, the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and teaching financial literacy to youth and at-risk adults,” shares Lisha. “It’s been a double bonus for us: we get to help our community and our staff has really enjoyed meeting our members outside 1st united credit union login the credit union environment.”
1st United has taken their Chabot partnership to heart and have already expanded the program by introducing a school fundraiser to Chabot Elementary families and teachers. Additionally, the Credit Union has supported Chabot’s Fall Festival, volunteered at Chabot’s Read-In, and even helped out at Chabot’s first-ever Oakland Day event, celebrating the unique cultural landscape that is Oakland.
“We are so grateful to Chabot for welcoming us into their family and hope to continue our volunteer efforts with them,” says Lisha. “They are a wonderful community. Our hope is that our involvement, large or small, contributes to the success of the school.”
