Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

When you make a purchase, it’s helpful to have the peace of mind of warranty protection from the manufacturer — especially if it’s an expensive item. But if your item breaks or is damaged after the warranty has ended, you may think you’re out of luck. The good news is if you put your purchase on a credit card with extended warranty protection, you may still be able to receive reimbursement for repair or replacement costs, or even have the original purchase cost reimbursed. That’s something to remember now, in particular, as we head into the holiday shopping frenzy.

This guide describes how to utilize the extended warranty benefit offered by select credit cards as well as lists some of the best cards that offer extended warranty protection. Consider using one of them for your holiday purchases to ensure that the recipient is protected against the unexpected and can use the gift you give them well into the future.

What is a credit card extended warranty?

The extended warranty protection offered by select credit cards effectively extends the manufacturer’s warranty on eligible products purchased with the card. This protection mirrors the protection provided by the original manufacturer’s warranty, so damage that would have been covered by the original warranty will be covered by the extended warranty.

Credit card extended warranty coverage varies. Some match the original warranty up to a particular period of time. Others add a set amount of time to the end of the original warranty. However, there are usually exclusions and maximum coverage limits. Note that extended warranty protection covers a wide variety south state bank greenwood sc items, whereas the cellphone protection offered by select credit cards only covers cellphones.

Back in 2019, Citi removed many benefits from its cards to the dismay of many. However, the Citi cards described in the above table still offer an extended warranty benefit. This benefit extends the manufacturer’s warranty by two years, with total coverage not exceeding seven years from the purchase date.

Citi doesn’t have a minimum manufacturer’s warranty required for coverage, so a one-month manufacturer’s warranty would still be extended by two years on covered items. If you purchase an extended warranty, Citi’s coverage begins at the expiration of that warranty. To be eligible for coverage, you must have paid for either all or part of the item with your Citi card and/or ThankYou points.

Citi’s extended warranty coverage doesn’t apply to:

  • Boats, cars, aircraft or any other motorized land, air or water vehicles and their original equipment (tires aren’t covered, either).
  • Services, unless covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Used, antique or pre-owned items.
  • Items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use.
  • Land or buildings; housing properties.
  • Plants and live animals.
  • Items that don’t come with a manufacturer’s warranty.

Additionally, Citi’s extended warranty coverage doesn’t apply when:

  • You fail to care for or service the item appropriately as required by the manufacturer.
  • The item has a product defect, recall or experiences normal wear and tear where no failure has occurred.
  • The item is damaged because of an act of God, such as a flood, hurricane, lightning, wind or earthquake.

How to utilize credit card extended warranties

There are a few items you should save after buying something that has a manufacturer’s warranty if you’ve used a credit card that features an extended warranty benefit:

  • Original store receipt.
  • Credit card statement for the month showing the charge.
  • Manufacturer’s warranty booklet or document.

If something you own breaks and has a manufacturer’s warranty:

  1. Check the manufacturer’s warranty. If the item is still covered, begin a claim with the manufacturer.
  2. If it’s outside the manufacturer’s warranty, check the benefits guide for the credit card that you used to make the purchase.
  3. Call a benefits administrator if you need to file a claim or have questions regarding the claim process or eligibility. Call before getting the item repaired in case you are required to send it to a particular repair facility.
  4. Collect documentation — which may consist of a repair quote, photos of the damaged item, the original receipt and the credit card statement showing the charge — and submit the claim.

If approved, you’ll usually receive a check or statement credit reimbursing you for repair costs, replacement costs or the original purchase cost. In some cases, the benefits administrator may ask you to send back the item for inspection or repair.

The extended warranty benefit offered by select credit cards doesn’t cover all purchases or all types of damage. Your purchase won’t be covered if an eligible manufacturer’s warranty didn’t originally cover it. Additionally, most extended warranty benefits have maximum coverage lengths and coverage limits per item, claim or account.

Most extended warranty benefits have set exclusions. Some types of items are commonly excluded, like cars, boats, software, plants, animals, antiques and products normally hard-wired into a house. Likewise, some types of damage like power surges, accidental damage, catastrophes, wear and tear and riots are usually excluded. You can find all of the exclusions in your card’s guide to benefits.

Synchrony at strategic crossroads after losing Walmart deal

After losing out on the opportunity to issue new credit cards to Walmart customers, Synchrony Financial is at a crossroads. The problem is, the Stamford, Conn.-based company does not get to decide its path forward.

Walmart announced a deal Thursday that will make Capital One Financial the exclusive issuer of its credit cards starting in August 2019.

For Synchrony, the longtime issuer of Walmart credit cards, the important question now is what will happen to its existing portfolio of approximately $10 billion in loans to the retail giant’s customers.

Under one scenario, Synchrony would sell the Walmart loans, which account for about 13% of the credit card company’s total loan receivables. In the second scenario, Synchrony would hold what is a good working capital the Walmart portfolio, and seek to convince those existing customers to switch to a credit card that has no affiliation with the discount retail chain.

The first option would free up capital, which Synchrony could use to strengthen relationships with existing synchrony bank walmart credit card contact partners such as Amazon, Gap Inc. and JCPenney, pursue new partnerships, and buy back more of its shares. The second walmart online coupons would enable the company to diversify into the broader U.S. credit card market.

During a call with analysts on Friday, Synchrony Chief Financial Officer Brian Doubles indicated that the choice is out of his company’s hands. Under a contractually defined process, the portfolio will be given a valuation, which will be used to determine a potential purchase price, he said. Then Walmart or Capital One will have the option to buy the portfolio.

Executives at Synchrony also emphasized that either of the two options will be better for the company’s earnings per share than renewing the Walmart first state bank north fort payne al would have been.

“While we are disappointed that we are not renewing our program with Walmart,” Synchrony CEO Margaret Keane said, “we are focused on either optimizing the capital freed up, if the portfolio is sold, or leveraging the benefits from retaining the portfolio.”

Synchrony shareholders appear to be skeptical. The company’s stock price has dropped by 12% since late Thursday, when reports about Walmart's new partnership with Capital One were first published.

Kevin St. Pierre, an analyst at Bernstein Research, said in a research note that Synchrony shares are “now a ‘show-me’ story,” doc holliday hat like shares in American Express were after the New York-based card issuer was jilted by the retail chain Costco in 2015. Costco cards are now issued by Citigroup.

Synchrony also has a card partnership with Sam’s Club, the Walmart-owned discount club, which expires in 2021. The credit card issuer vowed Friday to be aggressive in trying to renew that contract.

But Synchrony’s failure to extend the Walmart deal may alter investors’ perceptions about its chances of renewing other partnerships, said Sanjay Sakhrani, an analyst at Keefe, Bruyette &Woods.

“The problem going forward,” Sakhrani wrote in a research note,” is there is likely to be a discount applied to the uncertainty of renewals.”

Synchrony, which was spun off from General Electric in 2015, has been partnering with the independent merchants for many decades, and it still leans heavily on credit cards that are co-issued with retailers.

However, Synchrony has also established a small presence in the general-purpose card market. Following the bankruptcy of Toys R Us in 2017, shoppers who had Toys R Us credit cards were offered the opportunity to obtain a Synchrony card.

Doubles said Friday that roughly 50% of the credit cards it currently issues with Walmart can also be used in other stores. “So they’re kind of acting like a general-purpose card already,” he said.

“So that gives us some comfort that there is a population there that we can convert and would be very receptive to a Synchrony-branded card with a very attractive value proposition,” he added.

During the second quarter, Synchrony reported a profit of $696 million, which was up 40% from the same period a year earlier. Loan receivables rose by 5% to $79 billion, the company said Friday.

Credit quality trends were mixed. The percentage of loans that were at least 30 days delinquent fell from 4.25% during the second quarter of 2017 to 4.17% in the same period a year later, while the percentage of loans that were charged off rose from 5.42% to 5.97%.

Resolving Debt with Synchrony Bank

Many branded store, and specialty credit cards, are serviced by Synchrony Bank. If you are wondering whether you card is serviced by Synchrony, I provide a list of known businesses that use them below.

As you can see, Synchrony is not just about its flagship relationships like Amazon, and Care Credit. They do a ton of financing with fuel stations, and other auto related purchases we all need, as well as major clothing stores like Old Navy, American Eagle, and many others.

There are other credit card servicing platforms for large and small retailers, like Comenity Bank, but Synchrony is the largest. They have millions of customers.

Can’t Make Payments on a Synchrony Credit Card?

Making late payment to Synchrony? How to resolve your debts with them.

If you miss a payment to Synchrony, they are likely going to charge a late fee. If your situation is such that you can get the payment and fee to them prior to your next billing cycle, you can avoid being reported as 30 days late on your credit reports.

If you are dealing with something more than a one month financial hiccup, you may want to call Synchrony, after already being late, and ask about any hardship repayment program they may offer to you. But be sure you are confident you can follow through with any reduced payment Synchrony offers on a continuing basis.

If your situation is one that causes you to miss more than one payment, or you have too many accounts that you are juggling, it may be time to seek out a more permanent solution.

Getting Help with Synchrony Debt

You may have passed the point where temporary relief, or Synchrony waiving a late fee, is going to be helpful. This is often the case when you do not have enough income to meet all your bills each month. When this happens, you are typically looking at the following 3 mainstream methods for getting debt relief.

  1. Enroll in a consumer credit counseling program and get all of your credit card debts under control. Review that link for a complete understanding of how credit counseling can help you. The gist is that your interest rates are reduced through agreements the counseling agency has with Synchrony and your other lenders.
  2. Be late enough with payments to Synchrony in order for them to settle with you for less than what you owe. I often target Synchrony settlements at 40% of the balance owed (there are reasons to aim lower, or accept higher). You can sometimes split that up into 3 months if your account has not been charged off. And you will often find you are dealing with debt collection agencies and debt buyers the longer your account has gone unpaid.
  3. You could file chapter 7 bankruptcy and wipe out all unsecured debts. Be sure to review your situation with an experienced bankruptcy attorney. There are income and asset considerations for each state that can vary, and prevent you from filing.

Anything but paying Synchrony on time, all the time, is going to have an impact to your credit score, or your ability to access new credit products and loans. Be sure to review this article about how debt relief hurts your credit before you make any assumptions. The truth may surprise you.

Things may not be simple

There is usually more to think about when your settling debts with Synchrony. Most of us have more than one debt we are struggling to keep current, and Synchrony balances may be the lowest on our list. In fact, the smaller the balance (less than $1500), I will often discourage falling behind if it can be avoided.

It is also important to point out that Synchrony is one of the few lenders that will refuse to send you a written agreement, or settlement letter, outlining what you negotiated with them over the phone, until your payments are set up in the system. I typically encourage you to record the phone call where you are covering all that you are agreeing to with them. Use an old-school tape recorder on speaker phone, or download one of the free apps. Be sure to tell them you are recording that portion of the call and why (they will not release a letter). Hold that recording until your letter arrives (they do send them).

Check out this video where I cover negotiating with Synchrony in more detail:

Be sure to reach out via the get help button if you want to talk through your options with someone. I can often answer basic questions via email, and you have the option of scheduling a 15-minute free call.

Here are the more common retailers and services that provide credit cards through Synchrony. Not all of these accounts will settle the same way, or for the same amount, but most do.

Best credit cards for extended warranties

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We may receive compensation when you click on links to those products. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page. For an explanation of our Advertising Policy, visit this page.

The best extended warranty cards of 2021

The information for the Amex Green, U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve, Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select and Hilton Aspire cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Note that extended warranty protection covers a wide variety of items, whereas the cellphone protection offered by select credit cards only covers cellphones.

Visa Signature and Visa Infinite cards — such as the new Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card — offer extended warranty protection. Both card types will extend warranties of three years or less and will cover up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per cardholder. Visa Signature cards will match warranties of less than one year and extend warranties of one to three years by one year, while Visa Infinite cards will extend warranties of up to three years by one year. Benefits only available to accounts approved for a Visa Signature or Visa Infinite card. Terms apply.

USAA credit cards also offer extended warranty protection that will match warranties of less than one year and extend warranties of one to three years by one additional year. You can be covered up to $15,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per account.

In the second scenario, Synchrony would hold onto the Walmart portfolio, and seek to convince those existing customers to switch to a credit card that has no affiliation with the discount retail chain.

The first option would free up capital, which Synchrony could use to strengthen relationships with existing merchant partners such as Amazon, Gap Inc. and JCPenney, pursue new partnerships, and buy back more of its shares. The second route would enable the company to diversify into the broader U.S. credit card market.

Executives at Synchrony also emphasized that either of the two options will be better for the company’s earnings per share than renewing the Walmart contract would have been.

Kevin St. Pierre, an analyst at Bernstein Research, said in a research note that Synchrony shares are “now a ‘show-me’ story,” much like shares in American Express were after the New York-based card issuer was jilted by the retail chain Costco in 2015.

We may change APRs, fees, and other Account terms in the future based on your experience with Elan Financial Services and its affiliates as provided under the Cardmember Agreement and applicable law.

1. You will earn 2 Points per dollar in eligible net purchases (net purchases are purchases minus credits and returns) that you charge. Account must be open and in good standing to earn and redeem rewards and benefits. Upon approval, refer to your Program Rules for additional information. You may not redeem Reward Points, and you will immediately lose all of your Reward Points, if your Account is closed to future transactions (including, but not limited to, due to Program misuse, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or death). Reward Points will not expire as long as your Account remains open. Certain transactions are not eligible for Reward Points, including Advances (as defined in the Agreement, including wire transfers, travelers checks, money orders, foreign cash transactions, betting transactions, lottery tickets and ATM disbursements), Annual Fee, convenience checks, balance transfers, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, overdraft advances, interest charges, fees, credit insurance charges, transactions to fund certain prepaid card products, U.S. Mint purchases, or transactions to purchase cash convertible items. The 2% cash back rewards value applies only to Points redeemed for a deposit into an eligible Fidelity account. The redemption value is different if you choose to redeem your Points for other rewards such as travel options, merchandise, gift cards, and/or statement credit. Other restrictions apply. Full details appear in the Program Rules new card customers receive with their card. Establishment or ownership of a Fidelity account or other relationship with Fidelity Investments is not required to obtain a card or to be eligible to use Points to obtain any rewards offered under the program other than Fidelity Rewards.

2.

Because the interest and other fees charged on any outstanding balance are greater than the cash value of the rewards points, you may pay more in fees and interest than the value of the points you earn if you do not pay your bill in full each month.

3.

To receive a deposit, you must link your eligible Fidelity® account to your card. This can be accomplished in any of following ways. 1. You may contact Elan Financial Services Customer Service at the toll-free phone number located on the back of your credit card and provide them with your eligible Fidelity® account (s) number. 2. Simply select the “Manage Reward Points” hyperlink from the credit card snapshot page on Fidelity.com and follow the easy steps. You may also watch a brief video that describes the linking process on the credit card snapshot page also found on Fidelity.com. Please note that automatic redemptions will occur on a monthly basis as long as you have reached the point redemption threshold of 2,500 Points.

4.

Eligible accounts include most nonretirement registrations as well as Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Rollover IRA, SEP IRA, Fidelity Charitable® Giving Account®, Fidelity HSA®, and Fidelity®-managed 529 College Savings Plan accounts. The ability to contribute to an IRA or 529 college savings plan account is subject to IRS rules and specific program policies, including those on eligibility and annual and maximum contribution limits. Full details appear in the Program Guidelines new card customers receive with their card. Contributions to Fidelity Charitable® are generally eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction. Please consult with your tax advisor. The list of eligible registration types may change without notice at Fidelity’s sole discretion. For more information about whether a particular registration is eligible, please call 1-800-FIDELITY (800-343-3548).

5. Certain restrictions apply to each benefit. Details accompany new account materials.

6.

7.

Cardmembers are responsible for the cost of any goods or services purchased by the Visa Signature Concierge on cardmembers’ behalf.

8. Fidelity Rewards+ generally requires $250,000 invested through Fidelity® Wealth Services, Fidelity® Strategic Disciplines, or a combination of both registered as an individual account, a joint account, or certain types of revocable trusts. Assets in other registration types, such as irrevocable trusts, partnerships, or LLCs, will not be included when determining program eligibility.
