Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

Most of us know why we celebrate Thanksgiving but just in case you don’t here’s the official Britannica definition of the American holiday.

Thanksgiving Day is an “annual national holiday in the United States and Canada celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. The American holiday is particularly rich in legend and symbolism, and the traditional fare of the Thanksgiving meal typically includes turkey, bread, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. With respect to vehicular travel, the holiday is often the busiest of the year, as family members gather with one another.”

Thanksgiving Day can be a whirlwind of activity. There's the Thanksgiving menu to plan, the Thanksgiving centerpiece to craft, and best Thanksgiving traditions to uphold. Or maybe you'll be taking a road trip to visit family that you haven't seen in months! Either way, you might find yourself needing a quick, stress-free bite before the main event (or, shudder, perhaps the meal is a flop and you're seeking some emergency sustenance!). You may have heard that many major retailers, like Walmart and Target, are closing their doors on November 25 this year, and that might have you wondering what restaurants are open on Thanksgiving Day. Well, you're in luck. Whether you want to pick up some donuts for breakfast, grab a coffee, or if the whole event seems too overwhelming and you want to forget cooking altogether and go for a feast of burgers and fries or pizza, there are options available, even on Thanksgiving Day.

While these fast food restaurants are planning to be open on Thanksgiving Day, it's always best to give the location a quick call to double-check before you get your heart set on an order of fries. Hours can vary, and some franchises are locally owned and could decide to close.

1McDonald's

If you need to grab a snack on the way to the big dinner, McDonald's will be ready with fries and burgers. Most restaurants are locally owned, so be sure to check with your specific location for hours.

2Burger King

Last year, all locations were open on Thanksgiving Day. Check with your local restaurant for hours.

3Subway

Was your turkey a fail? Many Subway locations are open, but restaurants are locally owned, so call ahead if you need to pick up some sandwiches.

4Wendy's

If your Thanksgiving menu goes horribly wrong and you want to drown your sorrows in a Baconator, Wendy's is ready to help. Hours vary by location, so check with your local restaurant before heading out.

5Dunkin'

Need to feed the troops breakfast with a dozen donuts or grab a cup of coffee to get you through the day? Don't worry, most Dunkin' locations will be open. Be sure to check the store locator for hours.

6Sonic Drive-In

If you're craving a cherry limeade on the way to Grandma's house, you're in luck. Sonic Drive-In restaurants are locally owned, so hours vary, but many are open on Thanksgiving Day.

7White Castle

White Castle restaurants are typically open every day except for Christmas and Easter, so if you want some sliders on Turkey Day, you're in luck.

8Popeyes

Last year, Popeyes offered whole Cajun-seasoned Thanksgiving turkeys. Even if that's not the case this year, you can still pick up some of their famous sandwiches.

9Starbucks

A busy day of cooking calls for a caffeine pick-me-up. Luckily, Starbucks will be ready to help you out. Be sure to check the store locator for hours before you head out the door.

10Domino's

We get it, you're hungry after the feast, but you can't stomach the thought of leftovers quite yet. Grab some pizzas from Domino's to feed the crew. The independently owned restaurants have the option of opening on Thanksgiving Day, so check with yours before making plans.

11Boston Market

Boston Market restaurants will be open if you want help with the Thanksgiving meal instead of a burger-and-fries option. You can pick up some sides, a pie, or the complete ready-to-heat meal.

What fast food restaurants are open 24 hours?

When you’re craving breakfast (or dinner) in the middle of the night, where you do go? Which fast food restaurants are open 24 hours? We’ve put together a helpful, quick list for you to have handy.

While you can count on most McDonald’s locations being open 24 hours a day, that doesn’t mean all are. It all depends on whether the restaurant is a franchise and it also has a lot to do with where you live.

Fast food locations inside shopping malls and certain shopping centers, for example, can’t open or stay open 24 hours a day when the building doesn’t open until shopping hours. However, the Burger King by a busy highway or street is likely always open for business.

Which are the major fast food chains open all day, every day? We’ve put together a list for you to bookmark (or memorize) so your cravings are always satisfied, because here at Guilty Eats, we know better than anyone that when the craving for breakfast at midnight strikes, we gotta have it!

Fast food restaurants that are open 24 hours a day

  • Waffle House (all locations)
  • IHOP (all locations)
  • Denny’s (select locations)
  • Boston Market (select location)
  • Whataburger (select locations)
  • Jack in the Box (most locations)
  • McDonald’s (most locations)
  • Burger King (select locations)
  • QuickTrip (most locations)

Does this list seem shorter than you imagine? I sure found it so.

For the most part, you can count on Waffle house, IHOP, McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, and QuickTrip to be open for business 24 hours and have a quick bite for you to enjoy at any time of the day. The majority of these locations are always open.

McDonald’s and Jack in the Box close their dining rooms around 9-11 p.m., but the drive-thru window stays open.

Burger King, Boston Market, and Denny’s have a lot of locations that do open 24 hours, but not all of them. For example, the closest ones to me are not open 24 hours, but some that are 30 minutes away, do.

Starbucks and Chick-fil-A do not, and never have, been open 24 hours. You’ll have to wait to get your coffee fix and dose of tasty nuggets!

Which fast food restaurant is your go-to for a quick bite in the middle of the night or early in the morning?

Happy Thanksgiving! If you’re just not in the mood for turkey and all those Thanksgiving sides today, you might be wanting to grab something from McDonald’s or Burger King. But are the stores open today? Some will be open today, but not necessarily all. Read on for more details.

McDonald’s Hours Vary for Thanksgiving Because Most Stores Are Franchise-Owned

Some McDonald’s stores will be open today for Thanksgiving, but not all. A representative of McDonald’s told Heavy previously that there isn’t a chainwide policy regarding whether or not the fast-food restaurants are open for most holidays.

The representative said: “Hours vary by location as the majority of restaurants are franchised by independent business owners.”

This means that although some restaurants will be open today, you’re going to need to check with your local restaurant for the exact hours, including when the stores open and when they close.

To find a McDonald’s near you, go here.

You can access exclusive deals from McDonald’s, including Mobile Order & Pay options and Curbside pickup, if you use the app. McDonald’s also works with delivery services, including Uber Eats and DoorDash, if you’re interested in having your meal delivered to your home today.

McDonald’s has a number of specials right now. (These may vary by location and can change at any time.) When you download the McDonald’s app and join MyMcDonald’s Rewards, you’ll get your choice of free hash browns, vanilla cone, McChicken, or Cheeseburger after your first purchase. And you’ll automatically get free large fries. You can also get exclusive deals through the McDonald’s app when you use contactless Mobile Order & Pay with the Drive Thru or Curbside pickup option.

For a limited time, McDonald’s is offering free medium fries and a free medium soft drink with a Crispy Chicken Sandwich, through December 12 at participating locations.

Through December 31, you can get $1 large fries once a week through the app with Mobile Order & Pay. You can also get $.99 any size premium roast or iced coffee through December 31, once a day, with Mobile Order & Pay.

McDonald’s is also offering free medium fries on Fridays with a minimum $1 purchase (through December 31) using Mobile Order & Pay in the app.

Burger King Hours Are Determined by Franchisees, So Some Stores Will Be Open Today

A Burger King representative previously told Heavy: “Holiday hours are up to our franchisees so we recommend that guest check their local restaurant for hours of operation.”

This means that some Burger King locations will be open today, but not all of them. Franchise owners have the flexibility of deciding if they’re going to be open today or not, and of choosing their hours.

Contact your local Burger King here to verify the hours at the location near you and whether or not it’s open today for Thanksgiving.

Burger King is offering a number of deals at participating locations. You can get a free Whopper on your first digital order (minimum $3 order), and a $1 delivery fee on the BK app or BK.com (for orders $5 and more). You can also earn “crowns” and redeem them for free food if you join Burger King’s Royal Perks club.

8 fast-food chains that are thriving during the pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic posed many challenges to the fast-food industry, but some chains are performing better than expected.

Some chains have relied on drive-thru service, new menu items, and customer loyalty to pull in sales, and many have been successful in their efforts.

Here are eight fast-food chains that are thriving in the pandemic.

McDonald's leaped into action at the start of the pandemic and pivoted to a limited menu featuring its most popular and high-performing items.

In March, McDonald's immediately began limiting its menu to items the chain is known for. The chain removed items like salads and All Day Breakfast in order to streamline operations for its employees. Though many items have yet to return to menus, that hasn't hindered the chain's success during the pandemic.

McDonald's reported that same-store sales increased 4.6% in the third quarter of last year, which ended on September 30, CNBC reported. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski credited the chain's success despite the pandemic with the company's "unrivaled drive-thru presence around the world, advanced delivery and digital capabilities, and marketing scale," Restaurant Business Online reported.

Kempczinski also cited the chain's "promotional activity" for the increased same-store sales. The chain introduced a number of new menu items, including spicy chicken nuggets and a number of celebrity collaborations, such as with Travis Scott, to pull in customers.

Chick-fil-A's steadfast customer loyalty and innovations during the pandemic has allowed the chain to thrive.

Chick-fil-A heavily focused on drive-thru, mobile ordering, and contactless payments during the pandemic. It introduced health-and-safety precautions like handwashing stations and Purell wipes for employees during the pandemic, while keeping its drive-thru lanes "full just like it always does," according to QSR Magazine.

"No major quick serve has loyalty like Chick-fil-A," wrote QSR Magazine in its ranking of the 50 biggest quick-service brands in America, which placed Chick-fil-A in the third spot.

Taco Bell's drive-thru sales have been through the roof. The chain is serving customers even faster than before the pandemic.

The drive-thru lane has become instrumental in the success of fast-food chains during the pandemic, and Taco Bell is no exception. According to Restaurant Business, Taco Bell served 30 million more cars in the third quarter than they did the previous year — each order was also completed 17 seconds faster.

Taco Bell's parent company, Yum! Brands, reported that in the third quarter, Taco Bell had a 3% increase in same-store sales.

KFC has also seen an increase in same-store and drive-thru sales.

The chicken chain, which saw success largely due to its family-oriented bucket meals, saw same-store sales rise 9%. Drive-thru sales also increased 60% in the third quarter, compared to the previous year, Biz Journals reported.

Jack in the Box is in talks to expand its business after promising same-store sales in 2020.

According to Restaurant Business, Jack in the Box same-store sales rose 12.2% in the fast-food company's third quarter, which ended September 27. The chain has also settled a dispute with its franchisees, an issue for growth that CEO Darin Harris addressed in a call with investors.

"The franchise lawsuit has been resolved," Harris said, according to Restaurant Business. "It clears the past for our existing franchisees to grow, and they've expressed that desire to grow. And in some of the surveys we've completed, two-thirds of them have raised their hand saying, 'We want to grow.'"

Popeyes' same-store sales also rose almost 20%, due in part to its popular chicken sandwich.

Popeyes' famous chicken sandwich was released back in 2019, and the highly popular menu item has proven successful for the chain ever since. In May, it was also reported that sales had risen 40%, showing that customers keep going back for more.

According to Restaurant Business, same-store sales at Popeyes continued to grow 19.7% in the third quarter compared to the previous year.

Wendy's same-store sales rose 7% in the company's third quarter last year.

According to Restaurant Business, Wendy's same-store sales rose 7% in the company's third quarter, with the chain's new breakfast rollout accounting for 7% of all sales.

"In the face of the pandemic, with mobility being down, we're very happy with how our breakfast business has been performing," Wendy's CEO Todd Penegor said during a third quarter earnings call. "We're feeling very bullish on the future of breakfast."

However, despite Wendy's promising numbers, breakfast continued to be a sore spot for fast-food chains. According to reporting by Insider's Kate Taylor, breakfast sales at McDonald's, Starbucks, Dunkin', and other chains are down, even as sales throughout the rest of the day have improved.

Del Taco reported promising sales while announcing the chain will redesign its restaurants to be more drive-thru-friendly.

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

On January 12, Del Taco reported a system-wide comparable restaurant sales increase of 3.8% during the fourth quarter.

"We are proud of our restaurant teams, franchisees, and support center staff for providing our guests great food, great value, and great experiences that drove fiscal 2020 overall satisfaction scores to record levels while navigating a challenging pandemic related operating environment," John D. Cappasola, Jr., the president and CEO of Del Taco, said in a press release.

The chain also announced its new "Fresh Flex" restaurant prototype featuring third-party delivery order pick-up stations, double drive-thru lanes dedicated to mobile orders, and expanded parking spaces for people to eat their food, according to QSR Magazine.

"Unfortunately the pandemic has created a lot of shakeout in the industry," Jeff Little, senior vice president of development at Del Taco, told QSR. "But we see it as an opportunity for Del Taco franchisees to take advantage of newly available real estate... Fresh Flex lets us scale the kitchen and the dining room to meet the needs of almost any location."

The first Del Taco Fresh Flex restaurant is set to open in Orlando in summer 2021.

Fast Food

In the 1950s and 60s, fast food chains – epitomized by McDonald's – revolutionized the restaurant industry and changed farming and food distribution businesses.

The first McDonald's restaurant was actually a barbecue joint that opened in 1940 by brothers Dick and Maurice (Mac) McDonald along Route 66 in San Bernardino, California. At first, they offered 25 different items served by carhops. They catered to young affluent people who were part of the emerging California car culture. Teens drove up, placed their order with the carhops and were served on trays that hooked onto rolled down windows.

In 1940, The brothers figured out that almost all of their profits were coming the sale of hamburgers. They also sensed that teens and families alike were interested in eating quickly. So, they closed down their restaurant for several months and developed their "Speedee Service System" of food preparation. This was a streamlined assembly line for food. They also streamlined their menu to hamburgers, milkshakes and french fries. The burgers sold for 15-cents, about half of what a burger cost at regular diners of the time. With success, the brothers franchised their enterprise and had eight restaurants open by the early 50s.

It's significant that McDonald's concentrated on milkshakes because that brought Ray Kroc to McDonalds in 1954. Kroc was selling the Multimixer – a machine that could mix five shakes at a time – when he became fascinated with the Speedee system. He asks the brothers to allow him to franchise McDonald's outside of California. They do and Kroc opened his first outlet in Des Plaines, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

By 1958, the company sold its 100 millionth hamburger. By 1961, Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers and opened a training facility called Hamburger University in Illinois. The rest, as they say, is history.

In a way, Burger King was an outgrowth of McDonald's. The same year that Ray Kroc visited the original McDonald's, James McLamore and David Edgerton visited as well. They were both graduates of the Cornell University course in hotel administration, and they also saw the potential of assembly-line fast food. They opened their first restaurant in 1954 in a suburb of Miami, Florida. Now, Burger King has more than 11,220 franchise outlets in 61 countries.

The franchise model was quickly adapted to other types of food, for example, pizza. By the early 50s, servicemen returning from Italy brought back a taste for pizza. Up until then, pizza was a regional dish concentrated in Italian immigrant neighborhoods in New York and Chicago. New York pizza was very thin, and Chicago pizza tended to be very thick. After WWII, other local pizza joints began to open up with a variety of recipes.

In 1958, Dan and Frank Carney borrowed $600 from their mother and opened the first Pizza Hut in Wichita Kansas. It was so successful that they began franchising restaurants quickly. By 1968, they opened their first restaurant in Canada. Now they have operations in over 100 countries.

Dominos added delivery to the pizza business when they opened their first store in Detroit Michigan in 1960. Their guarantee – delivery in 30 minutes or it's free – helped them expand to include more than 8,000 stores in 55 countries.

Today, there are 4.2 billion pizzas sold every year by 60,000 pizzerias.

The franchise model – with a central source of supply for food items and standardized menu – became so successful that fast food joints are now part of multi-national corporate giants. Pizza Hut is now part of the aptly named Yum! Brands, a corporation that also owns Taco Bell, A&W, Long John Silver's, and the American icon KFC.

In the early 1950s, Col. Harland Sanders was both a victim and a beneficiary of the automobile boom. Since the Depression, Sanders had been serving fried chicken – prepared with a "secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices" – at his gas station and restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. But the route for the new Interstate 75 was going to bypass his establishment, so the Colonel sold his property and started traveling across the U.S. trying to sell his spice recipe and preparation method. Sanders claimed that frying his chicken in a pressure cooker shortened the preparation time. The short cooking time would take advantage of the fast food boom. No one bought, until Pete Harman of South Salt Lake, Utah, opened the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in 1952. Today, KFC has 750,000 employees and is the most popular Western fast food chain in China.

Coincidently, Dave Thomas got into the fast food business by franchising several KFC stores in Ohio. He was the one who came up the idea that the chicken should be sold in paper buckets to wick away excess moisture, and he also came up with the rotating bucket-of-chicken advertising sign that, at one time, was outside every KFC.

But in 1969, Thomas wanted to go out on his own, and so he opened the first Wendy's in Columbus, Ohio. He stressed fresh, rather than frozen, meat served as square patties prepared fresh and served "hot off the grill." Wendy's was also the first fast food restaurant to build a drive-through window in 1970. That cut down on labor costs because carhops were no longer needed, and all of the fast food chains built drive-throughs within a few years.

The predominance of fast food restaurants changed the food supply chain all the way down to the farmer. McDonald's quickly became the single largest buyer of beef, pork, potatoes and apples in the U.S. That gave them tremendous economic clout.

The fast food system is all about standardization, and so when the companies went looking for someone to supply their meat, they choose to deal with their large, corporate counterparts in the packing industry. IBP began to produce "boxed beef," where the final cuts of beef, including hamburger, were produced at the processing plant rather than the local grocery. IBP became the largest supplier of hamburger meat to the fast food industry.

Kentucky Fried Chicken buys all of its chickens from huge suppliers like Perdue, Tyson and Pilgrim's Pride. McDonald's gets its fish products from the giant supplier Gorton's of Gloucester.

Because consumers with busy lifestyles needed food fast, the chains needed raw materials in standardized packages. So, meat packers needed a consistent supply of standardized animals to produce their meat. They couldn't afford to deal with the uncertainty of many, small family farms. So, livestock producers became bigger and bigger. McDonald'sand other chains have also been accused of using their huge buying power to keep farm produce prices artificially low.

When McDonald's expanded into international marketplaces beginning in 1971, McDonald's both adapted to local conditions and forced local farmers to adapt to them. For instance, beef is not the lead meat item offered in countries that have cultural taboos or food preferences for other types of meat. However, the company has been accused of changing food preferences and exporting American culture around the world along with its propensity for obesity.

McDonald's and other fast food chains have affected farmers wherever new restaurants open. In 1990, McDonald's opened their first outlet in Russia. When they realized that they couldn't guarantee a high quality, reliable supply of meat and other food products, they opened their own farms, controlling the supply chain at every step.
